After reading this I told the plumber who's installing my new upstairs bathroom that I wanted to go with cast iron, at least for the long (16') vertical run behind my DR wall. He told me he doesn't work with cast iron. I called two more plumbers, and they don't work with it either. They all say that it's too problematic to work with, and that the weight of the pipes weakens the connecting fitting over time and they leak. One of these plumbers was 60 yrs old and has been in the business for 40 years. I'd like to use some cast iron, but can't find anyone who will even install it!

lwylie, perhaps it's time to consider doing it yourself? Really, it isn't rocket science.

(I'm preparing to build my entire own home next year, and yes, this will be a first time effort)

Iwylie,

If you are having bother finding someone to install Cast iron pipework, there is another alternative although i'm unsure of the relative costs, which is Geberit's Db acoustic draingage system,it uses high desnity plastic pipework, with anti vibration mounts and soft bends which prevent transmission of noise between one section of pipe to the next. A quick seach online for "geberit NewAcousticbrochure.pdf" should be suffient to provide you with the information you require.

Good luck, hope you find a solution.

Liam
