Do you have any information about the company "TEX-COTE?" I have a bid from them to coat my house in California.

No. But if they make claims like you see in the column above, sign a contract at your own peril.

Why no response to Joseph LaRochelle? He deserves a response- especially since you had soooo much to say in the other direction. Thanks./

Clay,
My response was my original column. To show I am fair and balanced, I published the responses I received just like Letters to the Editor. The point being people like you can read all that is above and make an informed decision.

What coating would you recommend for covering hairline cracks and stained stucco. I wish to do this myself and I am wondering if elastomeric paint is just as good.

Jerry,
Since you asked, I would skim the surface with another coat of stucco that was mixed to a color I liked.

In reference to the artile on "Miracle liquid siding products". I'm a little confused. Is there any product out there that will actually do away with the every 5-8 year house painting?

Pete,
Yes. Build your home from cement stucco. Pick a color you will love forever. Add that pigment to the stucco mix. Your house now will just need to be washed like your car from time to time to look like new.

We have received bids from two different liquid siding companies: Coastal Spray On Siding of North Carolina,LLC and Final Coat Exteriors. Do you know anything about either of them? After reading all the articles, I am very skeptical of using these products!

Thank you.

Tim,

Do you happen to be a painter? The comments that you are making are rather drastic and inaccurate. If you look at the chemistry of thees products you would understand that they can meet the claims they are making. I do undersstand that cretian products are junk but others are not.

We just had a sales person from Rhino shield talk with us about coating our house with a ceramic coating. Have you heard of this company and is the ceramic coating the same as the liquid siding?

Don't want to paint again ever?
I was in Joao Pessoa, Brazil. All the new houses and highrises all have ceramic tile siding. Never needs painting, doesn't peel, ever. No maintenance.

Do you have any information good or bad on a product called Liquid Ceramic promoted by Bob Vila or a company called Premier Bulding & Window LLC of Pembroke Ma who installs the paint on houses.

We purchased Liquid Siding in June of 04, and have a 25 year warranty certificate. The problem is we can not get service for the product, as our contractor has gone out of business. We have however been asked by several companies to pay $1,500.00, and $750.00 for their company to now honor our warranty. The product did not coat our wood properly and we continue to have problems dispite having the original contractor and one other contractor replace the wood and recoat it. So much for no maintenance. Please respond. Brenda Siegel, Chesapeake, VA

If you have had a quote for Tex Cote-watch out! They have high presure sales tactics to try and get you signed up on a contract and get your money. Read the following web site for more info. Our sales guy turned out to be a lier.

Dear Tim,
We had a company install liquid siding on our concrete board home. One of the features says the product will never mold or mildew, which is just what our house is doing. Never is never. The dealer says they don't cover this kind of repair. How should we proceed?
Thanks, Melissa

Dear Tim:

I have talked to three different liquid coating outfits: Tex Cote, Surecoat (epoxy balanced) and Kryton (ceramic based)and I find it all sounds too good to be possible.

My concern is not energy, but brittle wood, caused by rainy winters and very hot dry summers. The house is 40 years old. The exposed supporting beams have the same problem and many have been fixed by replacing the wood.

I was hopeful that the spray-on skin would eliminate further deterioration. I was told the wood would be power-washed and caulked, dry rot would be removed and beams fixed as necessary. They calculated about a week for that work. Only then would they apply the coating.

How else can I save and maintain the wood under a normal coat of paint? Can you suggest a solution? I would be grateful indeed.

In response to an earlier question, your answer to permanent re-paint avoidance was new stucco construction. But for those of us with 100-year-old homes and unique siding contours, that's not an option! Any ideas for us? Thanks.

Dear Tim:

While I appreciate your info, the one about liquid siding is age-old. I am still waiting for something substantial. Quality First - Home Improvement, Inc. based in California (Roseville)describe their work: repair all decay to walls. Pressure wash. Apply primer to all walls, eaves, fascia, trim, posts, etc. apply cool wear Texcote wall system to all exterior area.

I want high-gloss white and black. The cost:$16,000.

Advice?

Thanks, BJ
