Good day
Please send me a short message on how roofing nails and wire nails are made, I am writing a project so I want to explain to people how to make nails.

Regards
Rose

Simple. They all start as a giant spool of wire. The wire is fed into a machine that cuts off a small length, smashes the top to create the head and then makes a point at the end.

Are your comments above also applicable to '35 year glass fibre' shingles laid on 1/2 inch OSB?
Initially my roof was great when laid in 1993 but now it consistently leaks in two valleys formed between a garage whose long axis is at right anles to the main roof. I find popped nails in many places throughout the roof but it only leaks in the valleys. I am told that the valley flashing extends approximately 9 inches either side of the centre crease. Is this enough?

Richard,
Go read the special column I have about how valley shingles MUST be cut to prevent leaks. See if your shingles have the little tip cut off.

My home is 1.5 years old with a high quality asphalt shingle. Combined with the steep pitch of my roof I have been told the roof could last 30-40 years. It already leaks. I have nail pops ALL OVER. Does the roof need to be replaced?

Brian,
You need the roof inspected by a real professional. This person can tell you if the roof was installed according to specs. You can also ask the Manufacturer to send out one of their regional reps.

I have a roof vent that ripped out about a 8' long section due to high winds. So roofing nails don't work when i try & re-nail the metal vent back in the same place. Since the holes are pre-set on the metal vent, I cant nail it down in any other place but where the holes are. What to do?

Nancy,
Who says you can't nail it in another location on the flange??????? I am sure you can and you simply slide a piece of tin under the flange at the old hole locations, then caulk the holes on top of the flange.

I have champion Home that has litterally hundresd of these nail popping problems. I used silicone for a temp fix. But would replacing the regular nails with ringshank help in the OSB

In New Zealand most houses have moulded sheet metal roofs. I have roof nails popping up over much of the roof.(The house is 26 years old)
A builder sugested removing ALL the nails in the roof and replacing them with rppfing screws each with a rubber gromet. I am apprehensive. Why replace all the nails and not just those that have popped up.
Can you advise?
Kindest regards,
Alan.

I just put a 8X10 foot roof over the swing on my deck. I am getting ready to shingle to match the house. I only have 5/8 inch plywood on the top that I have treated. What nail do I use to secure the shingles thru the asphalt felt and 5/8 inch plywood. I do not want the nails to show from the botton and I just read where the nails should go thru at least 3/8 inch to keep from popping. The shortest roofing nail I can find is 1-1/2 inch. Now what do I do? HELP
Thanks in advance.

I had a professional roofer check my roof and he said that nails were
popping up in so many places it would be better for me to have the whole roof replace. It was new 10 years ago. Do I really have to go to that expense again. Also, he said the nails were rusty, and I'm wondering if that is normal?

Thanks for your response,

Carol

For the person building a roof over his deck...I would first think about this...Is it possible that you may want to convert this deck into a 3 season porch...if so, then plan ahead. You may end up wanting to insulate the roof over the deck, and in that case, all your worry is for naut.
If your sure you'll never insulate, then you can just use screws, I would suggest painted or galvanized screws. If you must use nails, then follow the selection given. Then If this is only a small area so the cost is negligible, just add foam insulation to the bottom side to hide the nails.

I have a barrel tile roof and the leaks are from the nails. Should I drill the tile to get a different area to nail in?
