Sure. Go to Google and type this:

You will discover that the specialty tile stores that sell great tile and grouts also sell the stain.

thank you for the info. I have approx 1000 sq ft to recolor and most products are kind of expensive. What do you think about using a concrete stain and then sealing over that?

I have a tanish color tile floor, roughly about 1400 sq. ft. The grout is a warm grey, and new (about a year ago) looked bright and well, almost white. Now, my grout is visibly darker in the high traffic areas, around the couch, in the kitchen, while the rest of grout by walls or under furniture has more or less kept its brightness. I've tried the most expensive bottle of grout cleaner from Lowes Home Improvement, but even after scrubbing and proper setting time, have yielded minimal results. Any suggestions? Also, would Oxygen Bleach cure my problem? I had heard somewhere that bleach actually breaks down the grout?

Thanks, Nick in Texas.

We have approximately 1600 sq ft of ceramic floor tile which is grayish white in color and the grout is a darker gray. How can I change the color of this tile without having to remove all of the floor tiles.

Bobbie,
You paint them. Read my past columns about Painting Floors and Painting Ceramic Tile. Do a test!!!!!!!! Paint just one tile in a high-traffic area exactly as I tell you. See how it looks after 3 months.

I am building a house and the grout in my bathrooms turned out to orange. Can you recommend a stain color to counteract the orange. I wanted a medium tan with yellow undertones.
Thank you,

Going from dark to light is really difficult. You may have to remove the grout and start over.

I have stained the floor tile grout in a bathroom by using too much bleach on it. It has become a tan color in some areas and a dirty nasty brown in other areas that received more bleach. Do you think your stain solver oxygen bleach with fix this or would I be better off coloring the grout?

I have already tried to cover up my grout (it was supposed to look black) with a grout sealer combo colorant that was charcoal in color.

Now that it is applied it looks like a dark blue. When it cures, will it turn darker/blacker? If not would I be able to use the oil stain over the sealant? My tile is glazed porcelain, grade 5.

We put new tile down and the grout color isn't as dark as the sample that we picked. I have called all over the place to find a "grout stain" that we can put on before we seal the grout, but I'm having difficulty finding a product. I live in the Harrisburg, PA area-- anyone know of a company that can mail me grout stain? (I did mix the entire bag of grout... however I used tap water with chlorine in it -- which I'm told could have been the cause of the lighter color.) HELP!!

The sandless tile grout I used dryed much lighter than the color chart on the Box from Custom Building Products.
Their customer service says to use sulfumic acid to correct the problem.
I think a stain would be a better approach. Any suggestions?

We just tiled a bathroom and the grout is much lighter than what I thought we picked out. I actually think we received the wrong grout. Anyway, I was reading the comments about the staining and my question is, if we've already put a sealer on the grout, can you stain over the sealer? Is there a brand of oil base stain you recommend?
Thanks, Ronda

I had tile laid down this April 2008; my grout has a haze over it as well as the tile; I tried a haze remover today on a little area to see if it is going to work, it doesn't look like it's helping very much. The grout isn't as dark as I want can I use this oil base stain on my grout to make it a richer color, and if so do I have to get this haze off of the grout before I do it. Also what colors does this oil base stain come in?

I am currently building a house. We chose a tan grout to go along with our cream/off white tile in the bathroom around the tub and shower. They have just laid the tile and when I walked in my first thought was "ew."

I have them looking into the price of creating a change order to regrout, but stumbled across this site today. Would I be able to get it to be a buff color? That would be quite a bit lighter than what it currently is, and I noticed that you said it would be very difficult to go lighter with the grout stain.

Thanks,

Hi the grout in my new home with slate dark grey ceramic tile on floors is a light grey grout. Anyways I accidentaly spilled aromatherapy oil on an area and it`s now very dark grey grout in this area. After cleaning and soaking up what I could it`s useless and still dark so then I tried this stain putty for grout and stone and let sit for proper time and I did over whole floor area to balance color incase it was lighter in oil area after cleaning, well the result is oil area still dark grey and other areas are splotchy whitish (way lighter than original grout color) and also dark grey in other areas (darker grey than before). Please help me what a splotchy mess!

What can I use to stain the grout on my new granite tile countertop. The grout color I selected was a dark Hydroment flas walnut but it did nto come out as dark as the sample and now does not blend in with the dark brown/black granite counters. Can you recommend a product that works with granite so I do not have to remove the grout and try again?

So I went to my hardware store to look for 'grout dye'. Well they had pre-dyed or rather, pre-stained grouts to choose from but not COBALT BLUE. It's all I want! Is there a particular place that sells GROUT DYE? Or should I just stain the grout afterward? Heck, would acrylic paints blend into the grout? Not sure this website is still active but thought I would give it a shot. Merry Christmas =)

Is there any kind of translucent paint that can be applied to glazed porcelain wall tiles (in the kitchen) to change the overall color. I like the natural stone effect, but the tiles are too cool in comparison to my warm tile floor. My countertop is also warm and more vibrant--strong veining in granite. I experimented by adding a little water to some acrylic craft paint I had and painted an extra tile I had, and it changed the shade with all the beautiful variation showed through--loved it. But, of course, acrylic won't stick to that surface--unless there's a trick you know of--I would assume it would also need an sealer coat of something. I also want a matte type of finish--or at the very least--a satin--not sure what it's considered on glazed porcelain--but that's the look I want. Can you help me--soon?

Hey Tim,

Thanks for the tip. I didn't have a good mix on a tan colored kitchen grout last summer, so it was spotty, and my three boys haven't treated it very well with their dirty shoes!

I'm now looking toward a darker mocha type brown, and with your advice I now know what to look for. I appreciate your advice.

Greetings from Detroit!

We just steamed cleaned a commercial food service area. One fella that I talked to about grout stain says that unless it is absolutely clean and grease free the stain probably won't take evenly.

I hope someone's still reading this all these years on!

Just a couple of quick questions. We tiled over a wooden floor upstairs, thus the grout had to be flexible. We wanted black, but apparently flexible grout isn't made in black. Whether or not this is true is beside the point, which is that we now have an ugly floor.

So firstly, can grout paint achieve a change as drastic as light brown to black?

And secondly, will painting the grout have any negative effects on the grout's flexibility?

Thanks,

James, London UK.

I just put glass tile up and the grout was to be sea grass which was tinted so that grout wouldn't be bright. Now my beautiful tile is lost under the white grout. All I see is the white grout. So how do I change and any suggestions for grout color so I won't see grout.

We've just installed our kitchen backsplash tiles (6x6" a medium sienna color with dark veins) and my husband chose a light creamy colored grout -- the whole thing looks a fright!

The tiles have rough edges and I don't think staining will work.

Would scraping some of the light grout off then rubbing a diluted version of a darker colored grout overall work?

Thanks,

I just had a porcelain tile floor installed with a walnut colored grout a few days ago. The grout seems to look lighter in some areas; almost a cement gray color. It look dusty to me but I've scrubbed and cleaned and there is no dirt or dust. I know the varying slope of the grout will reflect the light different, but I don't seem to have the same problem in the foyer asI do in the family room. Any suggestions?

Hi, I am in the process of remodeling my master bathroom. I am using travertine/limestone throughout . My issue is the 16 x 16 tiles that were installed on the floor. I truly do not like the grout color on the floor. As you already know, travertine tiles come in all different colors. My floor's tiles are beige, gold, brown , etc. The grout was supposed to be beige, it is very light, close to white.

Will it be possible to stain the grout to a darker color, closer to my tiles? I want a uniform look. The grout is also in the holes of the travertine. Can a company be hired to do the work ?

Thanks

ATB,

I have read much on grout stain and agree with you that oil stain would be the best approach. Why not oil based stains like Minwax used on wood? I seems that this would yield the same results at a fraction of the cost and the colors are diverse.

I installed new slate and grout on a fireplace chimney. I then sealed it with an acrylic sealer which dramatically darkened the color of the slate so now there is too much of a contrast between the two. I would like to stain the grout lines. I assume I should use oil stain as suggested. Is this correct? My next question is, do I need to remove the sealant before I apply the stain?

Hi Tim.

I found your informational page on grout discoloration very informative. Recently we tiled and freshly grouted our mudroom, kitchen, bath and I noticed noticed that their was a huge discrepancy of color in the grout throughout the rooms. I did seal the grout and my question is can I still oil-stain the grout even though I already sealed it with 511 Porous Plus sealer?

Thank you.

Suzanne
