Summary: Granite countertops are very heavy. When you try to balance one on a thin half wall, bad things can happen. Countertops that are not properly supported can flip and crash to the ground. Furthermore, the short wall needs to be braced so it does not wobble and tip.

A local contractor sells and installs 3/4 inch granite over plywood. He
states that this is sufficient for kitchen countertops. I do not want to go
with the 1 1/4 inch because of the cost and this is a condo that I will
sell in 2 years. Will it hold up under normal use?

Dennis,
As long as there is a great bond between the granite and the plywood you
should be fine.
