Painting Vinyl Shutters

By Tim Carter
©1993-2008 Tim Carter
Summary: Painting vinyl or plastic shutters is easy. Clean the shutters with soap and water and use a very sticky paint that has urethane in it. Do not paint in direct sun and try to do it on a day when the temperature is in the 60-75F range.

There is an easier way to resore faded shutters. Vinyl ReNu is a product that dries clear but brings back the color of the faded siding and it looks brand new. Also, there is no taping and little prep work other than cleaning like with paint.

Good luck.

I don't think we wanted to spend $300 for Vinyl ReNu

I would agree not spending $300 for restoring shutters. We used a product called Shutter ReNu that was no where nere $300. Our faded grey shutters look brand new.

So vinyl shutters that were originally blue should not be painted black?

Just got back from Sherwin Williams and when I asked about blend of acrylic and urethane blends I got several blank stares. The closet thing they had was their 'premium' exterior paint that has acrylic. That's what I went with. Hopefully it works.
