I am trying to replace the existing door hinges in my home. I can't find anything that is even close. The holes in the existing hinge, when closed do not line up, in fact they are opposite. Are the European?

The outside door on my house have different type of hinges than the inside doors. They do not have the standard pins that you push up and remove. There seems to be a slot on top of the hinge for a star screwdriver. When I insert the screwdriver the hinge turns slightly. It also has a small hole on the side of the hinge that I can look into and see movement. How do I remove the pin so I can remove the door. I want to install new weather stripping on the bottom of the door.

Manny,
Go to a hardware store that sells that hinge. You will see how to access the pin.

I have a four inch door hinge that is not the same on both sides. The jamb side is standard width, but the door side is narrower. There's a pd or dp stamped on the hinge. Where can I find this hinge, or one like it?

Hi - anyone know of a door hinge that will stop it slamming in the wind. I'd prefer not to fit one of those grotesque door closers as its my home front door. I'm sure I saw a hinge once upon a time that has some mechanism inside (fluid) that slows it down when slamming.

Dear Tim, I jut moved into a ranch home built in 1950 and I noticed that all of the door frames are made of metal? One room in the house had the doors removed and I purchased two doors to replace them. The problem is that one side of the hinge is built into the metal frame and I am trying to find a one sided hinge. Should I simply look for a double sided hinge that has a removable pin that will fit the existing pins in the doors? The good news is that I have all of the original pins on the fixed metal frame door hinge. I would appreciate your help and I could easily send you a photo of the type of hinge I need. It is 3.5" by 1.5"

Louis,
Yes, look for a matching hinge and recycle the half you do not need.

We are gutting our condo and need to replace door hinges for 17 doors. the old hinges are not original as they are not the right size, rusty and quite unattractive. the size we need is 4 x 1.25" on each side. The doors are solid birch, 7 foot high. I can't find this size hinge. The only thing i can think of is installing the 4"x4" and cutting into the wood a little. Is that a good approach? my other question is what type of hinge is recommended for this size solid door? we saw hinges for as little as $4 and as much as $27 that were heavy duty. you can imagine that at 17 doors, the price difference really adds up. would a cheaper hinge not hold this door? Thanks in advance.

Hey!

I have a metal frame for a door in my old apartment building. It has premade hinges welded onto a steel frame. I want to add a door to the frame, but I want it to open the other way. The side with the hinge is 2", then theres like a 1" raised divider, and then 1" of space. I was thinking of putting some kind of bracket hinge drilled into the metal frame and put a door on the other side.. Can that be done or a good strong bracket to be drilled into metal? I guess top of the line?

Marty,
I have a door with a spring hinge. How do I take it off since it doesn't have the typical pin that you remove from the bottom of the hinge?

I enjoyed your video on mortising a door to install the hinges, but what do I do if the hinges have a radius and do not have a rectangular mounting plate? Is the procedure the same - except that I trace the hinge raduis with the utility knife and chisel it out as usual?

I am trying to remove the pins from old door hinges in order to shave the bottom of the door. The pins on this door are hardly budging. I am using a screwdriver and a hammer to try to pop them up. Is there a tool that would make it easier to remove the hinges?

I have high polish brass hardware throughout my house and want to change it. The bummer is the door hinges in the house. Is there anyway to just paint the hinges or put something on them so they are duller and not so bright? thanks.

Hi,

I am replacing all of the interior and exterior door hinges. I noticed that each side of the hinge is different. Near the pin, one side is flat and one side has a slight curve. Does it matter if the flat side is on the door or the jam? Thank you.

The door swings closed even after it has been open. What is the best way to have the door stay open without using a door stop?

Albert,

Read Tim's column http://www.askthebuilder.com/Door_Closes_on_Its_Own.shtml. This might help with your closing door.

Hi, I have been helping a friend paint her doors. We removed them , as the hinges had been painted and we wanted to clean them. After re-installing the hinges and door, I can't get the door to shut, the hinges seem to bind at the last few inches.. These are the same hinges that worked before and I'm having this problem with all the doors. I have tried the cardboard shimming technique, but it doest seem to have helped. Also the doors are not hitting on the jambs anywhere. Any ideas what I can try next?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I replaced my front door but not the frame. The door I removed had the hinges mounted flush to the door. The door I installed had a cut in it for the hinges to sit in. After installation the door is off center in the frame and I am getting air through the knob side of the door. Is there a hinge that will compensate for this.

Hi
I am wanting to change my timber bathroom door so it opens from the opposite side, the door frame is metal and the door is timber.

The hinges on the metal frame seem to disappear in to the metal frame, what kind of hinges do I need to purchase (as I'll be putting them on the opposite side of the door frame) and can you give me any hints on how to install them?

Thank you,

Melissa
