Light Bulbs

By Tim Carter

Summary: If your light bulbs "burn" out quickly, it might not be the light bulb. Check the light bulb socket. Confused over compact fluorescent light bulb, halogen lights, energy saving light bulbs? Some light bulbs will save you money, but can change the colors in your home.

Tim,

Have you evaluated LED lights yet? I know they are the craze in Christmas lights - and look really nice; the area my office is in is using a lot of them this year. I bought two LEDs for nightlights - they use 0.3 watts! And put out nice color light. When are LEDs ready for prime time? What are their benefits / detriments compared to incandescent and CFLs? I still can't find CFLs with decent color - they just look too fake compared to my halogen flood bulbs.

Steven,
I used LED outdoor Christmas lights for the first time this year and absolutely LOVE them. I went to an Editors Conference at the GE facility in Cleveland this past summer. LEDs are right on the horizon, so watch this closely. Read my past columns on Color Temperature so you can get your head around the color rendition index. You might be amazed at how high the CRI is for certain CFLs.

Can a lightbulb burn out while it is on, without turning it off?
