Have you evaluated LED lights yet? I know they are the craze in Christmas
lights - and look really nice; the area my office is in is using a lot of
them this year. I bought two LEDs for nightlights - they use 0.3 watts!
And put out nice color light. When are LEDs ready for prime time? What
are their benefits / detriments compared to incandescent and CFLs? I still
can't find CFLs with decent color - they just look too fake compared to my
halogen flood bulbs.

Steven,
I used LED outdoor Christmas lights for the first time this year and
absolutely LOVE them. I went to an Editors Conference at the GE facility in
Cleveland this past summer. LEDs are right on the horizon, so watch this
closely. Read my past columns on Color Temperature so you can get your head
around the color rendition index. You might be amazed at how high the CRI
is for certain CFLs.

We have recessed lighting in our kitchen that measures 8 x 9 ft. There are
7 recessed lights (standard cans) and one wall of counters with under
cabinet lighting. There is NOT enough light, so we've tried to remedy the
situation with changing the bulbs. I believe they were originally 65W
floodlight reflector bulbs, but I believe the can is rated to hold a higher
watt bulb. I'm not completely sure about the last statement, though. What
is the best solution? Use a higher watt flood, use a spot light, or change
to halogen light? Is it dangerous to use a bulb stronger than the socket
is rated for? Five of the cans are around the perimeter of the room and
two are in the center. It's the perimeter where light shines on the
counter that we need the most help. Thank you so much. I've been
struggling with this problem for years and would love advice about the
bulbs.
