Building gravel driveway. Wondering how long I can keep my Geotextile fabric down before I am ready for gravel?

Phil,
What does the manufacturer say? The fabric may be UV sensitive.

I was wondering if the fabric can be placed over an existing driveway. I have a gravel drive up a steep hill that isn't holding up. It has a layer of number twos and then "dense grade" that sets up like concrete when it is dry. The problem is when it stays wet like it has over the winter the dense grade soaks up moister. Now I am seeing mud starting to surface in many areas. The road was cut before any rock was put down. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Michael,
Talk with the geotextile manufacturers and see what they tell you to do. They are the ones who have to stand behind their product.

Kim and Hairy,

I don't know what the experts recommend but I have had very good luck top dressing with what they call "traffic bound" or "dense grade".
It contains alot of crushed lime and small rock. When it is compacted or driven on it becomes very hard almost like a pavement. I recently top dressed mine with a 2-4 inch layer and it works really well.

Hairy,
Three-quarter inch or slightly larger.

Kimberley,
I mentioned the size in the Comment replies. Order 5 tons and see how that works out.

Joa,
That is insane....... Gravel IS part of nature. It is 100% pure rock. Who could fault that?????

I have a steep gravel drive that is 550 feet long. the house is at the top. my snow plow guy plowed my gravel off and now I have several long ditches that I need to fill with something before topping with crusher run. do I use dirt, gravel, large rock? I am getting all kinds of different advice from the area contractors. please let me know what you think?

thanks

Pat,
You fill them with crushed angular rock.

I HAVE A DRIVEWAY ABOUT 350 FT LONG AND 12 FOOT WIDE. IT HAD NO BASE PUT IN UNDER IT WHEN IT WAS LAYED. IT CONSISTS OF #57 APPLIED ON TOP OF THE TOP SOIL. IT HAS BEGUN TO DEVELOP LARGE BELLIES AND POT HOLES. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

D R Horton is building a development across from my house. from the runoff and no added drainage my driveway washed away and my basement flooded! they regraded by drive and layed new gravel while here they mentioned that i could sprinkle quikrete over the drive and it would harden and stay put. is this true and if so how much and how do i do this??

Rebecca,
That method is a temporary fix. If you live in a cold climate, wait until you see what happens next February.

We need to "pave" cheaply, about 5 acres of Mojave Desert dry lake bed. It's not always dry and can get VERY slimy. We don't need it pretty, but
do need texture so we can drive in and out and park. dry lake beds seem to have their own quirks and rules.

Here is a gravel road story, from a novice who had NO clue when I started.

I am just about finished with a 100 yard 'road' that goes down a steep hill, turns, and then takes a more moderate grade to the bottom of my property. The soil is all decomposed granite, so very sandy and well draining. I cut and smoothed a roadbed almost 3 years ago. I put 2-3 inch broken granite on top of the cut roadbed for about two years, keeping up with maintenance to allow the bed to firm up...then last month raked loose stones clear to form a berm, keeping the road crowned. I groomed the firm road surface well and then put on 3/8 inch gravel in only about a 1" (I used Palm Springs Gold, simply for the color (my wife liked it!)) I rolled this in wet (with a hose), with a dusting of cement mixed with sand and gravel dust (2:30:1). Winter will tell, but I live in (far) east San Diego County, CA, at about 2700 feet in elevation, and rainfall is light. The road looks and feels very sturdy. Hope this helps.

I have a driveway about 14 foot wide and 80 foot long it has a good base but I am pretty sure it has no landscape fabric it is all all covered in grass and weeds now pretty thick. my question is if spray a weed killer and tehn put a landscape fabric down and then my final gravel layer will that be good enough?

Where I want to put my drive gets wet in the rain, some water flows there from the yard. The drive will not get used very much maybe twice aday by pickup truck only.Want to use graval as asphalt or cement would cost to much.

We have a gravel driveway that I really don't want to pave, but each rainstorm sends some of the gravel to "vacation" in the gutter of my neighbor. We've bought this house with the gravel driveway so I have no idea as to the construction. Would mixing a bit of cement dust help? If not what do you advise?

we have a 1000 ft drive, the top soil was removed, what thaey call dirty rock was installed so we could move in and out while under construction of new home,
what would work best to level this out ( is fairly leve now, and get a base built of gravel for the drive.
the grade is slight and the one bend is about a 40 degree one , the sides of road are lower and drainage is good. Jim

We have a 1/4 mile drive from main road to house. First part of driveway is crusher run then turns off onto gravel drive. Is there a product that would help minimize dust created by vehicles? Just in case your first response is "drive slower," I already do that. Thank you for your time and response.

I'm planning on putting in a second driveway about 15-20' wide by 100 ft
The area tends to have standing water in the spring due to poor drainage. Will I need to put in drain pipes to the ditch roadside before putting down geotexttile and gravel?
Dan
