Summary: Confused on how to cut crown molding? Should you use a compound miter saw or a sliding compound miter saw? Miter saws are wonderful tools, but a compound miter saw is not mission-critical when it comes time to cut crown molding. Discover the way
I cut crown molding without using a compound miter saw.

Tim,
I have been told by other carpenters that you can cut inside corners of
crown on a compound miter saw and not have to do any coping, is this
possible ? If it is would you send along advice on how this is done.
Thanks
Ken

Ken,
It is indeed possible. But wasn't I clear above? You do *not* need a
compound miter saw to make all of the cuts you need to install crown
anywhere. You want crown-molding installation tips that allow you to do it
like a pro? Then here is a shameless link:

How do I miter a 50 degree angle when my miter saw only allows a 45 degree
maximum cut?

Kevin,
Rotate the wood 5 degrees off the fence.

I am truly a novice with crown molding and compound miter saws. I need a
bit more information in using the saw. I know there are 2 settings on the
saw one that moves the blade angle and the other the base angle. What do I
set the angles for an inside corner assuming it is 90 degrees. My molding
looks like the molding in Fig 3. I understand I may need to adjust the
angles to get the correct fit, but I need a starting place. Thanks

Diane,
Well, for one, you do not need a compound saw to do crown molding. A
regular compound saw does the compound cut in the saw when you hold the
trim the correct way in the saw. You need to read all of my columns about
Crown Molding........ and you may need my Crown-Molding EBook if you have
some tricky tasks.

Will a 12-inch miter saw work to cut 1x6 wood as like you said with crown
moulding? (If you put the crown molding upside down in the saw and hold it
in the saw the same way it will be installed it your home, all you need to
do is rotate the regular miter saw to the correct miter angle and make the
cut. Because the crown molding is being held against the saw fence tilted
down at an angle towards the table of the saw, the resulting cut is a
compound cut even though you were not using a compound miter saw.) I'm
replacing the wood on the eaves of my home. Thanks

Billy,
That saw will do what you need to have done.
