I had this happen when I was finishing a new shower stall. The plumber
dropped something and put a hole in a soap dish. He didn't even leave a
note but left it for me to discover, so I wasn't a happy customer.
I was able to replace the dish by carefully chipping out the old one, but
it was not a good thing. I was able to get an exact replacement because it
had been recently done. You might want to stockpile a spare dish if you
are retiling a shower in case this happens in your future. I am.
Memo to all: Might want to wrap your tiled-in soap dishes with foam before
beginning repairs that might result in accidentally dropping something
heavy on them! They are very thin and not as sturdy as tile.

Thanks for the info. My soapdish fell off the ceramic tile. The tile had
been abraded but it still didn't stick after a 3 year use.

Just bought a new home with a busted soap dish in the master bath.
Fortunately it appears that the majority of the previous dish is outa' here
so it won't leave a lot of chipping to be done. I appreciate this walk
through and look forward to twisting up a lefty and taking a crack at this
as soon as the closing! God bless!

This article is very helpful. I just bought a condo. The soap dish is
missing. As the last paragrash said, I noticed the large gap between the
plange and the tile when I tried to set the soap dish in. My quesiton is
how to remove the thinset or old mastic without damage other tiles? Is the
mastic a whole piece or just under that one tile(soap dish) place?
Why would you buy a home without first stipulating that things like
soapdishes and broken ceramic fixtures be fixed?

Thanx for the info. Now I Know why there is no hardware needed to go with
the soapdish, and what those 2 holes in back of it are for.

Where can I buy the standard size replacement soap dish for this repair
job? My broken soap dish looks exactly like the one in the picture... HOw
much will this job cost overall?
