Summary: Fiberglass doors are made by two major manufacturers: Therma-Tru and Stanley. Their exterior fiberglass doors are made with quality. Therma-Tru even has its own line of stain for their fiberglass doors.

I have had the pleasure to visit two great companies both of whom make awesome fiberglass exterior doors. It is an amazing experience to be able to walk through a manufacturing plant and see each step of how a door is made. The machinery and the processes are astounding.

To cut to the chase there are two major players in the fiberglass door market:

  • Therma-Tru
  • Stanley

There are other players, but these doors - and especially those made by Therma-Tru - are the the only ones I would consider for my own home.

Therma-Tru has been making fiberglass doors for nearly 20 years. They have perfected the process and refuse to cheapen their door. They are constantly fighting off cheap knock-offs of their styles and patterns, but these cheap impostors made overseas are no match for the real deal made right here in Ohio!

Their Own Stain

Therma-Tru also has developed their own proprietary stain system for their doors. Years ago the original stains were just ones made by traditional paint and stain companies and they did not hold up very well. So Therma-Tru decided to make their own. You can really tell the difference. Their stains are long-lasting and if you simply maintain the clear coat, you rarely have to restain the outside of your door.

Here are some other fiberglass door manufacturers. I have not used their products and cannot vouch for their quality.

  • Beveled Glass Designs
  • Hayfield Windows and Doors
  • Jeld Wen
  • Kaylien Doors
  • Kolbe & Kolbe Millwork
  • Masonite Intl. Corp
  • Peachtree Doors and Windows
  • Pella Corporation
  • Plastpro
  • Precision Entry
  • Target Windows & Doors
  • Taylor Building Products
  • Trinity Glass International

I am trying to find if anyone makes a customized fiberglass 30" double entry doors with nice designs. I do not like the 30" THerma tru doors, because they are plain. I was refer to Feather River Doors, but they are very costly. Can you recommend me some who does customize size with nice designs for 30" fiberglass double entry doors?

Thanks dom

Thanks for the heads-up on other mfrs of fiberglass doors. We had selected Therma Tru doors for the three exterior doors in our house, but the salesman blatantly lied about the availability of sizes. We need a 7' door; he swore they made them. Until, of course, we had made our selections and it was time to sign on the dotted line. Then came out the truth - they didn't make a 7' door; we would have to make the entryway smaller to fit their standard size door. Since we have a brick home, this would look awful to have the door frame expanded to that degree.

Needless to say we are taking another look at other mfrs.

Tim,

My Stanley fiberglass entry door (~10 years old) had a lttle "heat stroke" last summer and the trim around the beveled glass warped. Where, oh, where can I find a replacement for that part?

Would you recommend going to a chain store to purchase fiberglass french doors and have one of their contractors install them or go directly to the manufacturer to purchase and install the doors? Is one route less expensive than the other?

I am replacing 2'4" french doors with hurricane proof-impact resistant glass required by FL code. My existing doors have glass width of 20" and the new thermitru doors I discovered only have 14" glass. This decreases the light and changes the appearance. I live in a condo and the look now does not conform. My contractor tells me I can't replace the 14" glass with 20" glass and he tells me my opening is not wide enough to accommodate the next size. Any suggestions? I already ordered the doors and they are suppose to install this week and now the condo assoc does not want to allow only 14" width glass.

My Stanley fiberglass entry door with side lites is all dried and cracked. The trim around the glass is cracked and dried up.I had to reverse the trim on the door glass now the other side is all cracked.I have stained it with the proper stain and it still is in need of major Help. I tried to get in touch with the vendor I bought it from, they went out of businees. The door is 17 years old. These fiberglaas doors should not be installed in a sunny area. Stanley Prodigy with side lites. This door and side lites were not cheap. Is there a life time warranty on this door? If so who do I call? Thanks Jim
