I am in the middle of my roof cleaning project and was leary about using a
pressure washer on my shingles. After the garden hose failed to take of
the black streaks and algae, I tried pressure washing, what a difference
and the roof looks great.

The painters used a pressure washer on my roof. A great deal of colored
sand was dislodged and all over the driveway..trackedin the house, not a
neat job. Has this painter shortened the roof life?
Yes the painters shortened the life of your roof. The granules are the life
of the shingle; loosing them not only increases the risk of leaking, it
also raises the temperature of the shingles because the black tar is
exposed. Increased heat will further shorten the life of the roof. Always
look for professional roof cleaners who use only low pressure (ie 300 psi)
no pressure washer is needed, in fact it is not recommended. Check out my
articles: 6 costly misconceptions about power washing and Soft Washing vs
Pressure Washing
I am just interested in improving the "color" of my approximately 10 yr old
shingles. They do not have moss or anything on them they are just darkened
with the age. Can they be improved/cleaned to "look newer"?
