Hi, I'm Tim Carter from AskTheBuilder.com, and I'm here at this little house that's by
0:05
a lake here in New Hampshire that had some damage over the winter
0:10
And I want you to look at this. Check it out. Alright, see up there on the roof
0:15
See those puckered shingles? See the faded tar paper? And you can even see over there the edge flashing
0:22
Well, the question is, is it time for a new roof, or do we have to..
0:28
we get by just repairing this roof because you know what that's going to save a lot of money if
0:34
we can just do the repair job. Okay so here's what we have to do. Let's look at the shingles
0:39
that fell off the roof and that's going to help us make the determination whether it's time to do
0:44
a new roof or you know what maybe just get by with a repair. Let's go look right now. Okay here are
0:50
the shingles on the ground that fell from the roof. Let's take a look at them and let's look
0:55
really closely. So first of all, the shingles look to be in pretty good shape. You know, they, um
1:05
there not a lot of granules missing They not brittle I can still bend them I mean look at this I can bend And overall they look pretty good So what happened is that they were installed incorrectly
1:21
This is why they failed. Because this is where they were nailed. They were nailed way up high
1:27
And in reality, they should have been nailed down here low. And when you do it that way, you actually get two layers of nails
1:35
You know, two rows of nails go into each shingle. So I can tell you that because these shingles are still pliable, they look really good
1:45
the shingles up on the roof are in great shape, so you can absolutely repair this roof
1:51
It's not time to replace it, so this homeowner is going to save a lot of money
1:57
So that's all you have to do. You just have to inspect the shingles, and if that means kind of getting up on the roof and looking at them, do that too
2:03
But the point is, the shingles are in really pretty good shape. It's just the fact that the original installer kind of goofed up when he put the shingles on
2:12
And sadly, that may be the case for the rest of the shingles. Unfortunately, they may all have to be re-nailed
2:18
But the good news, you don't need to spend all the money on new shingles for this particular roof
