Hey, hi, I'm Tim Carter. I know this looks really weird. I'm laying down on a deck at a house
0:10
because a friend of mine was doing some work and he just couldn't believe something and he wanted
0:17
me to look at it and guess what it is. It's some idiot carpenter or builder had no idea what they
0:25
were doing when they flashed underneath a giant French exterior patio door. You've got to see this
0:33
This is the threshold to the door, you know, that's up above here. You know, you would step
0:40
across this coming out from the inside of the house down to the deck right here. But look at
0:46
this. This is a piece of aluminum, and it's just lapping over another piece of aluminum, and behind
0:53
it you can see the OSB sheathing that's on this house and there's not even any
1:01
Tyvek or anything there. Anyway, what covered this before, there was a
1:07
board across here and that board had rotted out and so he was replacing it and this is what he found But more importantly i i know it really hard for you to see but you can see that the aluminum stops right here and there this you
1:25
can see more wood and here's the underside of the threshold so there's no flashing that goes up and
1:32
underneath this flashing i'm sorry underneath this threshold that that's got to be corrected
1:38
I'm going to show you exactly how to do it right now. This is a really unique material
1:44
It is actually stainless steel. And it's about the thickness of a piece of, I don't know, heavy-duty aluminum foil
1:52
But it's true stainless steel. So it's very flexible. You can bend it
1:57
You can shape it any way you want. It's a marvelous material
2:00
And there's a link to purchase this stainless steel material in the description of this video
2:06
So if you're watching this video and you're not on YouTube, you want to go back and find this video on YouTube, and you'll be able to see that and make sure to get it
2:15
Anyway, so what I'm going to do is, I've already drawn a line on the back of this
2:23
Oh, it's got a glue. It's got a paper on the back of it. Really fantastic product
2:28
This thing this stainless steel material it kind of hard to peel off actually but this is a piece of paper that protects an adhesive that on here It a super sticky adhesive And what I going to do is
2:43
I'm going to take a razor knife and carefully score along this line I drew. It's about half
2:51
inch, maybe five eighths of an inch away from the edge. That will allow me to peel off this paper on
2:56
this part but it'll keep the paper up here because then I'm going to bend this up at a 90 degree
3:04
angle maybe maybe an 80 degree angle along this line here and then I'll be able to slide this part
3:12
underneath the threshold if I took the paper off here it would be too sticky you'd never be able
3:17
to slide it in so let's go ahead and do that right now I went ahead and uh bent the material you can
3:23
see how it holds the shape I mean because it's your it's a really thin piece of steel and and here I'm going to peel up this paper to get the adhesive
3:35
off boy it's so sticky and notice how the paper is still on here and it's going
3:42
to allow me to slide this up underneath the door there it is all the way underneath awesome awesome awesome and then stick it right to here It that simple Then we can put a bead of caulk up here This is the best repair we can do
4:01
And of course, you can do this with longer sheets of the material and fix it all the way along
4:07
It's probably best to work with two foot long pieces of material because it's so sticky. Once
4:12
you get it in contact with the aluminum, you're not going to be able to move it. That simple
4:17
okay i hope you enjoyed this quick video it's this is not a video to show you how to completely
4:21
flash the door we can't take all this stuff apart that's just not what's involved but we can make it
4:27
really pretty waterproof by putting that stainless steel self-adhesive flashing material in it's
4:33
going to do a really good job and once you put it all back together pretty much your water will
4:39
never ever get to the OSB sheathing. I'm Tim Carter, AskTheBuilder.com. If you want to discover
