0:00
and I'm doing a uh YouTube live vertical
0:03
and I just wanted to
0:06
um share a little bit of information
0:08
it's springtime a lot of people are
0:10
getting ready to start some projects and
0:13
you may be starting to think about doing
0:16
some plumbing or maybe you've got a
0:17
remedition you've got a big job coming
0:19
up and you want to know how in the world
0:21
to get a plumbing
0:22
permit it's really not that hard uh
0:26
typically what you have to do is you got
0:29
to start with a plan uh you're going to
0:31
need a simple floor plan you can draw it
0:33
yourself uh there are a lot of tools out
0:35
there that allow you to do it for free
0:37
and you can
0:40
um you just have to kind of show where
0:43
the the fixtures are going to be in the
0:44
room just as they will be when the job's
0:47
all done and there's lots of uh examples
0:50
of this if you just go out and look uh
0:53
on even on Google uh and look at the
0:55
image search you can just see how to do
0:57
floor plans and you know just put in
0:59
there bathroom floor plans uh it'll give
1:02
you an idea what to do all right so once
1:04
you do
1:04
that you'll have to go get a an
1:07
application form from your city or town
1:10
uh they're easy to get most of the time
1:12
they might be online simple form to fill
1:14
out a lot of times they want you to you
1:16
have to list what are the new fixtures
1:19
you're putting in like a vanity and a
1:21
tub and a shower and a toilet uh a bedet
1:24
whatever it might be and and then
1:27
they're going to charge you a fee based
1:28
on the fixtures that you have it's
1:31
pretty common in a lot of places that
1:34
you will have to uh probably provide a
1:37
riser diagram and a riser diagram and if
1:40
you got any questions by the way go
1:41
ahead and um uh Hey Jose how you doing
1:44
um go ahead and answer ask any questions
1:46
in the chat i'm happy to answer them
1:48
i'll try to look down at the chat every
1:50
now and then see what's going on uh
1:53
you'll have to do a riser diagram so you
1:55
might want to know what's a riser
1:56
diagram so a riser
1:59
diagram it's a drawing on a piece of
2:02
paper that's kind of in three dimensions
2:04
and what it does is it shows to the
2:07
plumbing department that you know which
2:10
size pipes have to go to each fixture
2:13
for drainage and what size pipes that
2:17
you use to vent each fixture and these
2:20
are really really important because if
2:22
you don't put the right pipes to the
2:24
fixtures uh things aren't going to work
2:26
right simple as that and it and they
2:28
also want to see that the riser diagram
2:31
also shows how the pipes interconnect uh
2:35
with one another really really important
2:37
and I draw them all the time i like
2:40
drawing them uh to me it's like doing a
2:41
cross word puzzle uh so if you need help
2:45
if you want to see one if you want to
2:48
understand a little bit more about riser
2:50
diagrams just go to my draw plumbing
2:52
plans.com website you'll see a bunch of
2:55
examples there and really really kind of
2:58
cool things i I like I said I like
2:59
drawing them
3:01
um usually with a plumbing permit once
3:04
you get the permit uh there's there are
3:06
usually two inspections uh if you're
3:08
doing like a a room addition or a house
3:11
or sometimes three uh if you're putting
3:13
any pipes underneath a ground like
3:16
that'll be covered by concrete you'll
3:18
have to do what's called a below roof
3:21
inspection the inspectors want to see
3:23
all of those pipes that are under the
3:25
ground before they get buried uh then
3:28
once you frame the addition and you put
3:30
all the pipes in uh they want to look at
3:32
the pipes um before you cover them with
3:35
drywall all right they want to make sure
3:37
everything's put in correctly and all
3:40
the right size pipes are there and then
3:42
when the job's done uh you'll have a
3:45
final inspection and typically you'll
3:48
you'll uh they they'll want you to do a
3:50
test uh you'll have to make sure that
3:52
you can show them that there are no
3:54
leaks in the system and uh pretty easy
3:57
to do you have to cap off the vent pipe
3:59
at the roof uh you have to put a a plug
4:03
uh in in your cleanout so that you have
4:05
a closed system and here's what happens
4:07
they'll typically go over to a toilet
4:10
and they'll either partially flush the
4:12
toilet by just pulling up the the
4:15
flapper valve a little bit to let some
4:17
water run into the toilet not flush it
4:19
you don't want to flush the toilet you
4:21
just let a little water run into the
4:22
toilet maybe I don't know um 8 ounces of
4:27
water 12 ounces of water and what
4:30
happens is if there's no leaks in the
4:31
system it's really pretty cool i I
4:33
probably should do a video about this
4:35
one day if there's no leaks in the
4:37
system what happens so you know that
4:40
think of how a toilet is you know it's a
4:43
it's just got a trap a P trap in it uh
4:45
you know when you look at a toilet you
4:47
only see half the P trap by the way but
4:50
so if there's no leaks in the system so
4:53
the water comes you know it's kind of
4:55
dribbling down into the bowl and bec and
4:59
because it it can't go anywhere the
5:03
water level in the toilet starts to rise
5:06
as if the toilet is clogged and that's
5:09
exactly what you want uh because if
5:11
there was a leak in the system that
5:13
little bit of water that is um coming
5:16
into the toilet would actually be enough
5:19
pressure to push air through wherever
5:22
the leak is so that's how we do a final
5:24
test on plumbing really pretty cool um
5:27
really interesting to see actually um if
5:30
you have any questions feel free to ask
5:31
them here on the uh live stream about
5:33
how to get a plumbing permit um how to
5:36
how to uh how to do any testing um
5:39
whatever it might be in fact you know
5:40
I'm the Ask the Builder guy so if you
5:43
have any building question you can ask
5:44
for that matter just type it in the chat
5:46
happy to help
5:48
um what else did I want to tell you
5:50
about plumbing permits usually it only
5:52
takes you they probably would issue one
5:55
in less than a week's time doesn't take
5:57
a long time to get them uh and they cost
6:00
it varies by the city and the town uh
6:03
they can cost as little as $20 or $30
6:06
might go up to a couple hundred dollars
6:08
just depends where you are so um really
6:11
as simple as that um it's um really
6:14
really pretty simple to um to get them
6:17
and um if you have any questions feel
6:21
free to free to contact me you can go to
6:24
askthebuilder.com and I'm happy to uh
6:26
there's an asktim page there happy to
6:29
answer your questions about how to uh
6:32
get a plumbing permit or answer any
6:34
other plumbing question all right so
6:36
just wanted to do a quick little live
6:38
vertical see how it uh works and uh
6:41
thanks so much for watching uh Jose see
6:44
you later buddy i hope I hope this turns
6:46

6:48
