Hi, I'm Tim Carter. And you are? You're watching Ask the Builder
0:06
It's that simple and it's gonna be a great live stream. I think
0:11
Um, first of all, we're gonna talk about these in just a minute
0:15
All right. So I'm gonna talk about bases and wrenches, but just
0:19
we're gonna get a little housekeeping out of the way and then we're gonna answer some questions
0:25
Uh, great. Uh, good. We already got our first question or so
0:29
That's wonderful. Uh, guess who's sponsoring today's live stream? Who else? Stain Solver
0:37
I have, I have a friend of mine who I gave some stain so to, uh
0:42
over two years ago. And this woman, this is a, the first girl I really dated anyway
0:52
She must be so clean because she's never asked for any more
0:57
It, it's like, how, how could you live such a clean life
1:01
I, I, it just astounds me, but if you're a dirty person or a not swimming person
1:07
stain solver is going to help you out it, laundry stains, uh
1:11
stains and carpet pet accidents, red wine stains. Uh, I just had a person ask us
1:17
will it clean, uh, persimmon stains out of a granite top. Well
1:22
yes, because Stain Solver cleans just about any organic stains. So persimmons or are they are organic
1:30
Um, anyway, it's a great product. Just go to Stains sover.com and watch the videos there
1:38
That will really give you an idea how to use it. It's really, really a great product and, and see this
1:42
see this baseball cap right here. All right. That's my favorite. Well
1:47
not that hat, Not that somebody sent in a photo of a baseball cap that they cleaned with stain solver
1:55
And I want you to go look at that photo. You just have to type baseball cap into the search engine and you'll see the
2:03
search result come back and then scroll down and look at the before photo and stop
2:09
And then I just want you to tell me what color do you think the hat is
2:14
You know, and then I want you to keep scrolling and read Georgia's story
2:22
right? So, uh, anyway, um, it's, it's really a great product. Uh
2:29
I wanna get something off my chest before I go any further. Uh
2:32
just, just an hour ago, I was in town. Uh, I had my daughter
2:39
I was out picking up a, a, an early Christmas present for myself and
2:44
um, from the fine people at Springfield Armory. And anyway, my daughter text me
2:51
hey, could you stop at the grocery? So it was a little out of the way I went and as I am backing into a
2:59
parking spot, uh, another woman had pushed one of the smaller buggies
3:04
I don't know what you call them, where you live, you might call it a grocery cart up here in
3:09
in the northeast. They call them buggies. So she unloaded the buggy and
3:15
um, and then she drove away and it just drives me insane
3:24
I mean, I, I, um, this is why the major car manufacturers should have invent
3:32
they should have horns that throw rocks. So when you hit the horn, it maybe throws a little rock
3:37
All right. So I, I just like, why would you just keep the buggy in the
3:45
in the, in the empty spot right there for somebody to hit with her car
3:51
Um Are you so lazy that you cannot take it to the little Corral
3:55
That's only 50 ft away. So don't be a buggy loser. That's my message to you don't be a buggy loser
4:03
I mean, that's, I just wanna, I don't want to strangle them
4:08
but I just, it just is so rude, so lazy. It just
4:14
you know, you've got enough energy to push it through the store and to push it out of the store and you don't have enough
4:19
energy left to get it 50 ft to the, to the corral. Are you kidding me
4:23
All right. We're gonna talk about basin wrenches in just a moment
4:27
Hi, Steve. How you doing, buddy? Uh Oh, yeah, I know, the
4:34
the press tool, two grand huge money. I, I mean, for a plumber
4:39
like me, I would, I wouldn't even hesitate spending that money. Um
4:43
never, I mean, I just, I, I spent so much money on tools because I needed them in the business
4:50
but more importantly, I knew that they made me money. All right. So, um
4:54
also little housekeeping. Remember if you like what you hear, if you, if you
4:58
if you, if you dislike buggy losers to, uh, hit the like button
5:02
it's really, really important to hit the like button. Uh, because it helps rate the
5:07
the live stream and it helps get the live stream a little higher in Google rankings
5:12
OK? I'm gonna answer, uh, P M's uh, question. Um, I'm gonna be doing a complete and then we're gonna talk about basin wrenches
5:20
So hang in there about the base wrenches. And if you have any other questions about anything
5:24
now's the time to put it in the chat, you know, go ahead and let's chat away
5:28
Let's, that's why I'm here. I'm here to flipping, save you some time and money
5:33
All right. I'm not here just to Chibber, jabber and blabber on because if you don't ask questions
5:38
I have to keep talking and sometimes I just talk about crazy things because I'm trying to fill the time
5:43
All right, you're gonna be doing a complete rebuild of a wood deck
5:47
How many coats should I spray of copper nin eight on the deck to
5:51
well, you wanna spray at least two, you wanna make sure you read the instructions on the label and you really wanna try
6:00
to get as much on the end grain as possible. I see you had a second comment. Should I soak the end of the joist
6:05
Yes. You wanna soak the end of the joist and that. Absolutely. How long, the longer the better
6:09
Um, you can just maybe have one of those little small paint rollers and you know
6:15
you just roll around on the ends of the choice and uh as soon as it soaks in
6:19
wait three minutes, come back, put some more in. Um And do I suggest tricks
6:25
Yeah, I have a, I have Trek, I have Treks generation one decking that was put on this house 20 years ago
6:33
Uh and just like software. The, the first version of just about every product is not so good and it
6:40
they're now on, on version three of, of composite decking and Trek has
6:46
has got it pretty much figured out. Um It, it's I, I have the Treks Transcend brand
6:52
I mean, that's the, the one that I have. So it's transcend. If you go to my the builder.com website
6:58
you can just type in transcend trans ce ND and look at the photos
7:03
look at the photos of my deck, I probably should take some nice close up photos
7:07
I don't know that I've ever done that. I think that's a good idea. I'll, I'll do that, but Trek is a good product
7:13
Uh, what's really, really important is you have to read the installation instructions
7:20
It's a very temperature sensitive product. So, the, the way you put it in depends on the air temperature and the temperature
7:29
of the product. All right. So, uh, it's, it's really important because of the spacing at the end of the
7:36
But what we call the butt joints, you know, where two long boards come together
7:40
So you have to be really careful about that spacing. So, read the instructions
7:45
Um, I wanted to also let you know that you need to put on the joist tape
7:53
Now, that's a newer product that's, that's been out, I don't know, maybe
7:59
maybe 56 years and it's a really good product and, and what it is is
8:04
is once you have the, your undercarriage built before you put any decking on it
8:09
it's a lot like electrical tape, but it's got a really good, uh, be
8:14
be rubber adhesive, very sticky. And what happens is you, it's about an engine 58 and three quarter wide
8:21
You put it out across the joist and it stops water from getting into the holes and basically the cracks that
8:30
the screws or nails leave. And that can, those I've got photos on my website of places where
8:37
uh the, the, there's a crack this long, uh, you know, half of which you know
8:42
either side of the fastener and if the water gets in there
8:45
it just causes the, the, the, the deck choice to eventually rot
8:49
So the duct tape prevents that. It's not too expensive, easy to put on
8:54
Don't skip that step. Especially if you're gonna put on uh uh an expensive composite deck because you do not want to be taken that
9:03
apart. You want that composite deck to go down and that's the last time you do anything with a deck
9:07
Believe me, I've had my tracks now down for five years, I think
9:12
And it literally looks as good as the day I put it in. And I have never
9:16
I've never done anything to it. I have never washed it. I've never scrubbed it
9:21
I've not done a thing. It just rains on it and it looks beautiful. Ok. Hi
9:25
Becky. Great to have you here. Hi, Gloria. Hi, how you doing? Um
9:30
Steve from the UK is still recovering. He can't even type any messages
9:36
He was so shocked by the price. And what we're talking about is I did a video on Thanksgiving Day about a copper press tool
9:42
So I, I'll demo it here on a, on a live stream maybe this week
9:46
I, I, I'll actually demonstrate it one time on the live stream and
9:51
uh, it, it's really expensive $2000 for this tool. And, uh, you know
9:55
you as a homeowner that, that would be insane to buy it. Uh, the only way it might make sense is if you were building
10:01
a new home, you decided you were going to put it in your own plumbing, you wanted to press all the fittings and
10:07
and you keep the tool in really great shape. I mean, really great shape. Uh
10:11
you know, you take care of it and then at the end of the job you maybe put it on Craigslist and sell it
10:17
you know, for 1200 bucks, you know, and, and, um, and if you keep it in really good shape
10:22
you'll be able to get that kind of price for it. So, um you know
10:25
so the tool. So, so, so, you know, you're gonna save a ton of money doing your own plumbing work
10:29
All right. So that's what I would do. You're welcome. Uh take photos of you doing this
10:34
this deck rehab project of you putting on the copper, you know
10:39
nap the date. Uh send them to me. I'd love, you know, share those photos because other people learn
10:43
If you let me put the photos on my website, then we save other people who have the same questions
10:48
See the advantage of that. That's why I need you to send me photos
10:53
And it's really simple to do. Just go to the website, go to the Ask Tim page and just uh you can upload three photos
11:02
at a time. All right. So anyway, that's how you do it simple as that. Once again
11:05
Don't forget to hit the like button. Don't forget to type your questions. Um
11:09
that's what makes the live feed work, the live stream. All right. Let's talk about base and wrenches
11:14
Then I'm gonna get to you, Steve and Gloria, I'm gonna get, I'm gonna get to you too just to
11:18
just to hang. But I, I want to talk about these base and wrenches in case anybody if that's why you're watching
11:24
All right. So a basin wrench, what is it? It's pretty weird tool, right? So, look at this
11:28
you know, it's got a spring loaded that, that comes right back, this head swivels either way and of course
11:35
this rod goes up and down. So, what's this used for? So this is
11:40
can you imagine if you've ever gotten underneath your kitchen sink, uh
11:44
or a bathroom sink on your back, which is very uncomfortable and you look up to where the two little supply tubes
11:52
uh, go to the underside of your faucet. You'll go, how in the world did the plumber tighten those nuts up there
12:01
Because you could never get a regular wrench up there. There's just no space to work
12:04
Well, guess what? This is the thing that does it. So when you're tightening
12:09
um, this is the position of the head because if, if my hand
12:15
if my fingers were the bolt and I'm turning it, it'll, the spring automatically bites into it because it's spring so I can turn it
12:22
clockwise and tighten it. If I want to take the faucet off
12:26
then I turn it this way and I'm able to unscrew, you know
12:31
the, uh, the nut that holds the supply tube in. So they're very, very handy tools
12:35
They're not too expensive. You can buy inexpensive ones, uh, you know
12:39
at any hardware store, any big box store or on Amazon. But if you're gonna change out a faucet
12:45
you're gonna have to have one of these simple as that. Now, this is kind of a neat one. Th this
12:50
this is a deluxe space invention. Here's one thing it does that yours might not do
12:55
So this might not get longer in case the in case the sink
13:00
I mean, look how long it is. Now, you know, it's got these de tens here in the little ball
13:04
So I push that button in and it just gets smaller, you know
13:11
So, um, because sometimes the distance you've got to go to get that nuts a little longer
13:17
So that's a, that's a great basin wrench. Uh, you, they're just invaluable
13:21
Uh, you can't really put a faucet in. I mean, sometimes, uh
13:25
if you have a granite top or you have a, a cultured marble top or something like that and you're gonna set that top on
13:33
the sink and you're, it's a new installation. I always do this. I, I always put the faucet on
13:38
um, the top before I put the top on the cabinet. Are you kidding me
13:42
It's so much simpler. I don't wanna, I don't wanna be laying there on my back. I mean, not only do, not only do I
13:46
put the faucet on and tighten it, I put the supply tubes on
13:50
you know, while it's out on the floor and I can just use a regular wrench
13:54
Uh, you, you just need this when, when the countertops already in, when you, when you have just got that narrow space to work in
14:00
So if you have any questions about basin wrenches, just type them in the chat
14:05
I understand that I've been a master plumber since 1981. That's a long time
14:09
So I know a little bit about basin wrenches and plumbing. If you have any plumbing questions
14:14
this is the place to come. All right, let's jump to the questions here while I'm reading
14:19
We'll get something to drink. Glory. Wants to know what's the longest lasting paint for wooden siding
14:29
And are there any that, that have any type of radiant barrier
14:32
Ok. That's two separate things. So we'll, we'll talk about the longest lasting paint first
14:40
The paint that I've had the best luck with and I know you're gonna find this hard to believe
14:46
I live in New Hampshire now, but I used to live in Cincinnati, Ohio
14:50
I painted my Cincinnati Ohio house, um, maybe 23 years ago
15:01
Uh, certainly at over 20 So, it's 20 to 23 years ago
15:06
I used a product from Sherwin Williams at the time. Their paint was called duration
15:11
Well, actually the paint was from Sears. But, uh, you know, Sears
15:18
well, they're almost out of business so they're out of business. So Sears never made anything
15:22
Sears was just a company that sold products. So they had other companies make the products and then they put the Sears name on it
15:31
So Sears had a deal with Sharon Williams and they, they, you know
15:37
they, I don't know, maybe they bought, they guaranteed that they would buy a million gallons of paint a year
15:42
Who knows? Doesn't matter. So there was a product at the Sears store
15:46
It's called Sears Weather Beater Ultra. Their, their regular paint was just called Weather Beater
15:51
But this new Ultra paint, I was at the editor's conference when they, they
15:55
when it debuted and the, all the Sher and Williams, you know
16:00
big wigs were there. I got to eat lunch with one of the very big big wigs
16:05
And I, I like talking chemistry. And anyway, to make a long story short
16:10
the, you do have to realize I, I've talked about this on past live streams
16:14
I, I'm sorry that I repeat it if you, if you're watching and you've heard me say it before
16:18
You need to understand what paint is. All paint is. I'm talking just regular paint that you and I buy it for our homes
16:25
It's just glue. It's, it's, I know this sounds crazy. It's not a whole lot different than the yellow
16:31
Carpenter's glue. If you looked at the chemical formula of like regular vinyl acetate paint and then carpenter's glue you
16:40
would go, uh, they really kind of look like the same thing
16:44
Yeah. Well, guess what they are. So, but paint just has a lot more things in it to give it more durability
16:51
So you want to have a glue in the paint and you already know this
16:56
If you go look at glue, if you go and look up glue or adhesives, they're all different types
17:00
right? So, what, what's the best one typically? Epoxy is, is considered the best
17:05
Well, guess what? You can buy epoxy paint but probably the next one down and
17:09
but Epoxy paints a little tough to work with because once you mix it, you better
17:13
you better get it on the wall because it's gonna get hard. Right? So, Urethane is the next step down if you have ever taking
17:22
Urethane, whether it's water based or, or, or oil base and you get Urethane on your hand and you don't get it off like you
17:30
just let it dry. It's gonna be there for a while. I mean, it's
17:34
it's gonna be there. It's like a fake tattoo, you know, I mean, like those, um, yyy
17:38
you know, those acrylic tattoo. I mean, I'm just telling you it's so sticky
17:42
Oh, So the Sears Weather Beater Ultra would had a urethane resin
17:48
had a urethane glue in it and you can still buy urethane paints
17:52
I have them on my website. Just go to ask the builder.com glory
17:56
just go to ask the builder.com and in the search engine type urethane paint and then you're going to see the ones that you can
18:03
buy right now. So that's what I would use uh radiant barrier. Ok
18:08
Here's how radiant barriers really work. A lot of people don't know this
18:11
Remember if you like what you're hearing. Hit, click the like button. All right. That's the
18:15
that's the least you can do. You can also buy me an ice cream cone if you want. If you like what you're hearing
18:20
you can go to ask the builder and buy us an ice cream cone for me. It's
18:24
it's one of my weaknesses. Mocha chip. Um, I used to know
18:28
um, actually that my, my first girlfriend, she used to make mocha chip ice cream cones at Aloys in Cincinnati Ohio
18:35
She actually managed the one up in Montgomery. Anyway, I'm getting off on a
18:39
on a tangent here. So, um, where was I, oh, radiant barriers
18:45
So, a radiant barrier for it to really work. And here's a really great example is
18:52
is uh, a sheet of aluminum foil. So let's say you're standing in front of a
18:57
like you can actually demonstrate this pretty easily at your kitchen. You know
19:01
if you have a gas stove or if you have a fireplace. So if you have like a fire going and you
19:06
you put your hand kind of near the fire and you feel the heat
19:10
you go like, wow. I, uh, I can't put my hand here much longer. So if you
19:14
with your other hand, if you drop a piece of aluminum foil and you have the shiny surface pointing
19:19
if you put a piece of aluminum foil between your hand and the fire and then you
19:26
you, um, make sure that you don't put the aluminum foil in the fire
19:29
All of a sudden your hand, you're gonna, you're gonna stop feeling the heat. I mean, you'll stop feeling it immediately
19:34
right? So, the radiant barriers work because there's an air barrier between the two
19:41
If you were to have the aluminum foil touch your hand and you put your hand in front of the fire
19:48
what would you feel? Yeah, the aluminum foil gets hot. So your hand's gonna get hot
19:54
So, having a radiant barrier in the paint, uh, I don't care what these companies say
20:00
it goes against all science. And right now, there's a big trend in that
20:04
There's a big trend in people not paying attention to the science
20:08
right? So we gotta stop that right now. All right, we gotta stop that right now
20:13
So forget about the radiant barrier and, and, and the paint, uh, don't get
20:17
don't get Hoodwinked by that don't pay extra for that. Um Forget about that
20:23
All right. So that's not gonna just forget about it. All right. So, all right
20:28
So uh once again, if you, if you've got a question about your home now is the time to put it in
20:33
Uh I'm gonna get to all the questions. So hang tight here. Um You also
20:38
you know, I'm gonna go off on a little tangent here. You sometimes see me on the live stream
20:42
scratch my ear. So here's why I'd say about 1210, 12 years ago
20:51
I got a really bad case of the shingles and I got it right behind my
20:56
at the base of my scalp on the left side. If you've ever had shingles before shingles
21:00
um It's just on one half of the body and there's just like if you go to the butcher shop and you see those pictures
21:06
of, of, of all the different cuts of the beef, you know, they've got these dash lines showing like
21:11
well, here's the pork chops or here's the steak and here's the loin roast
21:15
whatever. Uh They have those same maps for your body, your body and mind uh about shingles
21:20
So if, if you ever think you've got shingles, you need to go look up that map. And anyway
21:25
so it was horrible and I didn't get him diagnosed in time. It was my mistake
21:30
And ever since then my, my ear and especially inside my ear
21:37
Has been really sensitive to itching and it's just a, it's just a long term effect of having shingles
21:43
So, um, I, I, that's why I itch my ear or scratch my ear
21:47
I'm sorry. All right. So, uh, probably too much information. Right. Ok
21:51
I get it. I get it. Uh, here's Steve, we're gonna, we're gonna run down these questions as
21:56
as, as they're in the list. Is there anything you can do to stop white paint going yellow or is it down to the call
22:03
there? No, no. Exactly. No, that you're not gonna stop it. It's probably because the paint they didn't
22:10
they wanted to cheap out and they didn't put enough titanium dioxide in the paint
22:14
It's a tight titanium dioxide is a pretty expensive ingredient and the paint manufacturers don't like to put too much in
22:21
So that, that's why it's turning yellow. So, no, you can't do anything
22:25
Buy a better paint next time, Steve buy a really good paint with lots of titanium dioxide should stay white for a long time
22:35
Steve says he hates those wrenches. I prefer a buck spinner. Yes
22:41
Ok. All right. To each his own man. I mean, no problem. Omar
22:46
Hi. How you doing? Do plumbers spend four years at trade school just to figure out that excrement runs downhill
22:55
No. Uh If they go to a really good trade school, they learn lots
22:59
Hopefully they learn some physics behind what's really going on in plumbing
23:04
System especially drain waste and vent. Um, it's, it, it's, it's so
23:09
it's somewhat of a complex trade. Um, I don't know why you would ever need four years of schooling for it though
23:16
I can tell you that. II, I think you could easily get it. If you were a good student
23:19
you could learn it all in a year. Guaranteed. Um, so, um
23:25
Steve, at least you can play Shingle House for Christmas. Then. What do you do
23:31
You, you, you go to those comedy clubs? Do you do stand up comedy over there in the UK
23:38
Oh, my gosh. Um, ok. Uh You're, you're very welcome, Gloria. Um You're welcome for the information
23:47
I, I, I've been known that I talk too long about things and go
23:51
you know, I, I tell you how to build a watch instead of just what time it is. But I
23:55
I think it's really important to have the background information myself. Um
23:59
so the radiant barriers you just have to understand and here's the other problem with radiant barriers
24:04
They don't, they, they really lose their effectiveness if they get dirty
24:08
right. So, um, you know, you have to have you, they have to be clean
24:14
So that's why if you put a radiant barrier up in your attic, it may work great for the first three or four years
24:20
Uh But, you know, things get dusty up in an attic and all of a sudden the radiant barrier is not working that well
24:26
Well, that's why it got dirty. All right. So, um, if you have any more questions
24:32
um, put them in the chat and I'm happy to answer them. I don't know if you notice this
24:38
I, uh, you may just be a, a live stream watcher, not so interested in podcasts
24:44
I started to do podcasting three years ago. And, um, I, I only like to do things in my business that
24:53
that will generate revenue because otherwise it doesn't make sense because if you're a businessman
24:58
why would you want to do a lot of work for something and get nothing back
25:02
That just doesn't, that doesn't work in the real world. I mean
25:06
if you do it in the real world, typically you would get fired, meaning if you had a job and you didn't do anything
25:11
you didn't produce anything, you're gonna get fired. All right. So, well
25:15
unless you are a government worker. All right. So, anyway, sorry about that
25:19
I, I'm sorry at this, um, why a sweatshirt today? Too much turkey
25:24
No, no, no. Uh, this is just my, my daughter got this sweatshirt for me and
25:29
um, Croatia. So if you know anything about soccer, that's the, uh
25:34
the, uh, the Croatian soccer team. So I, I love this, I love this sweatshirt a lot
25:40
In fact, it's the, it's a, it was a dark beau beautiful navy blue, but it started to fade
25:45
but I like the two tone. I like this red, inner part for the hood
25:49
I love the red and blue, red and blue. My favorite two colors
25:53
Uh, so I, I, um, I may, if this totally wears out I'll probably have to go online and buy another one unless she's going
26:00
over to Croatia again. All right. So, um, no, I just, I like to wear different things
26:05
It just was more comfortable today, but I, I did have too much turkey on Thanksgiving night
26:09
I was not feeling too well. It was so good Cathy just outdid herself
26:13
I mean, crazy. She, she's such a great cook. All right. So um Oh
26:22
ok, thanks. Yeah, I do. I, I go way off on this tangent
26:27
I, I think it's really kind of cool because you get to see a side of me that and this is what my son
26:34
this is why my son told me to start up these live streams again because he said dad
26:39
he said people are going to see a different side of you. They're gonna get to see the side that I get to see all
26:44
the time, you know, and because in the videos, you know, sometimes I'll goof around a little bit
26:49
Uh But, but typically I, you know, I'm a little, a little too formal in the video
26:53
We're trying to get the this topic covered, et cetera, et cetera. So
26:57
um anyway, uh II I, I'm having a good time in the live streams and I
27:02
and I have the best time just so, you know, you may enjoy watching me
27:07
but I have the best time when I'm answering your question. So that's why I need you to chat questions and stuff
27:15
I, I mean, I just, I just thrive off those questions. I love it
27:20
All right. Let's get caught up here. Um Will, wants to know
27:24
what do you think about the whole house humidifiers attached to the forced air hot furs
27:29
They're good. I mean, they're, they're, they're great. You have the problem with most of them is you have to
27:34
they require a lot of maintenance. Uh, and we talked about that, I think last week
27:39
So just about every wa I mean, unless you're putting in distilled water
27:43
which no one would do if you're just have regular water from your, your city water main or a well water like me
27:50
all of the water's got dissolved minerals in it, you know, calcium magnesium
27:54
uh all kinds of things. So when you, when that water goes into the pad of the
28:00
of the humidifier and then the air blows through it and it evaporates the air
28:06
it leaves the minerals behind. So you have to clean that pad regularly
28:11
I mean, and the best way to clean it is just to soak it, you know, and luckily it's very inexpensive
28:16
you can buy it at the grocery for, you can buy a gallon of, of white vinegar for
28:21
I don't know what, 34 bucks, I mean, and, and, and you can typically reuse it
28:25
You don't use it just one time. So white vinegar. A lot of people don't know this because you
28:29
you know what? You didn't pay attention that day in high school. Chemistry. All right
28:33
We all had that problem. Uh, but I seem to have paid attention more than you
28:38
Maybe. I'm sorry, I'm just, I'm, there's nothing in this drink. This is just hot chocolate today
28:44
Ok. So it's just regular hot chocolate. I mean, you can see it right there with some marshmallows
28:48
All right. So, um some other people, my daughter would swear that I had put
28:53
you know, some amaretto in it. All right. So um white vinegar is
28:58
is, is acidic. It's, it's an acid and so the deposits that are in that pad are alkaline
29:06
So an acid will dissolve uh you know, an alkaline that that's why if you have those water stains around your faucets
29:14
all you gotta do is just put a little bit of a white vinegar in a paper towel and lay it on there
29:19
kind of like wallpapered on. Just let it sit for an hour or two
29:22
let the white vinegar do its job, come back and rub it and the, and the, and the water stain will be gone
29:27
So white vinegar fanta you should always have a gallon or two of white vinegar sitting around the house
29:33
Um, all right. If you thought of doing merch yourself. No merchandise
29:37
I, I have, I have not ii, I actually don't think anybody would buy it
29:42
Steve. I, I just don't, you know, I'm not a big name
29:46
like, uh, some of the other people that have television shows and
29:50
and whatever. I mean, I just don't, you know, and, and from a business perspective
29:56
I mean, I know you can get one offs done. For example, the, the, the big book that I published
30:01
Roofing rip off, uh, is you can buy it at Amazon either as a
30:05
as a Kindle download or if you want a hard copy, you, I mean
30:09
you want a paperback, Amazon will sell you a paperback. Well, guess what
30:13
They didn't print any, they didn't print them up, they only print it when you order it
30:19
And to me that technology, it just blows my mind that they can affordably print one paperback book at a time
30:26
All right. Don't ask me how doesn't matter. So, you know, the merchandise
30:31
you know, I know that there's the, what is it, Cafe Express or, you know
30:35
there's different websites where I could get stuff made. I may give it a try, but there's no way that I'm going to go get
30:42
a bunch of t-shirts made, get the logos on, invest all that money in inventory and then ship them out only to have somebody say
30:50
I want to return it. You know, like it, it, I don't like the way I don't like the way it looks
30:53
I don't like the size. I don't like how it feels. I, I, I'm, I'm in the hard aam business selling this and we rarely
31:00
have problems with returns. But I'm here to tell you for, as
31:04
as, as a person who sold hard products for 25 years now
31:09
it is a pain in the, you know what? All right. So
31:14
and, and some people want to return stuff and they got the craziest reasons and anyway
31:20
so, so I'm making excuses, right? So my oldest daughter's got a saying
31:24
excuses or reasons for failure. All right. So that's why I have failed to sell merchandise
31:30
So, but maybe you can convince me in a private discussion. All right
31:35
Um Merrill Concrete versus paver driveways. Oh, that's a great question, man
31:43
That Merrill uh I need to know. Um, oh, you're there still good
31:48
I need to know what can you just type to me? I, I just typed the state that you live in
31:52
I don't need to know the city, but I would like to know the state. Uh It makes a big diff
31:57
it might, it makes a little bit of a difference in my answer. So I'll wait for you to type the state
32:06
I'm gonna get to all these comments. I'll stay here as long as you want. You know
32:10
that's the beauty of this live stream. You want me to stay two hours. You keep typing questions
32:14
I'll stay here, Merrill. OK, Illinois. Good. Thank you. Thank you so much
32:20
So, first of all, the pa now when we say you say paver
32:26
that's a really interesting word because the word paver, in my opinion
32:32
has um been ized. A just like the home and garden TV network has ized whitewash
32:42
There are all these shows on there that show these very uh shapely women uh with bandanas on
32:51
you know, saying, hey, let's whitewash this today. And so they go take a gallon of paint and they put a bunch of water in
32:56
it and thin it down and no, no, no, that's not whitewash
33:01
No, no, no, that is not whitewash. That's thin down crap paint
33:04
That's what it is. All right. So pavers, you may merry. You may be thinking about the precast concrete
33:14
pavers. All right. So those come in different colors. But when I think pavers
33:21
I think of paving brick. All right. So there's a big difference between the two
33:27
So we'll talk about, we'll talk about all three, we're gonna talk about all three really quickly here
33:31
Let's go with concrete first. Concrete, fantastic product. It's just fantastic as long as it is specified
33:39
right? Mixed, right. The ground underneath the concrete is bright. The thickness of the concrete drive is
33:47
right. I have all this on my website. I, I actually sell a product that um has got the specifications for you
33:54
I'll actually, I'll put it right here. Let's, uh, I, I'm sorry that this is going to look a little clumsy because I'm a man
34:01
and men cannot multitask. All right. All right. I, I'm just no good at it
34:06
So I'm here typing in my, um, shopping cart and I'm trying to come back
34:11
Here, we go right here. So this, this product that I sell
34:16
it's only 995. I'm coming back. Uh, see this is where I need that streaming software
34:25
Um, I, I'm still working on it. All right. So, Merrill, um
34:29
you might wanna look at this if you're gonna go concrete. All right. So this is a really, really fantastic product for 10 bucks
34:36
All right, you gotta specify the concrete, right? You gotta mix it right
34:41
You gotta place it right. You gotta have the right reinforcing steel in it. You gotta finish it right and you have to cure it
34:47
right? Ok. Well, luckily in that document, I tell you all that
34:51
I tell you everything what to do and if you can stay home and you can watch that and you can
34:55
you can actually supervise the contractors to make sure they're doing every step right
34:59
Because you're gonna put every step in your contract with them. You're not gonna just put in the contract
35:05
You're not gonna ever sign a contract that just says, um, ABC concrete will install a new concrete driveway
35:15
at 123 main street for Merrill who lives in Illinois. No, no
35:19
no, no, no more contracts like that. No, no, no, no. You're going to actually state in the contract you mr contractor are going to
35:27
install a six inch thick concrete driveway. You're going to compact the sub base
35:33
You are gonna order a seven bag mix that has a minimum of 5000 P si You are
35:39
No, it's going to be a 4.5 inch slump. Uh You're gonna have enough workmen on the job to handle a four inch half inch
35:46
lump. You are not gonna add any water to the concrete. When it gets there
35:50
you are going to put it down. You are not going to add any water as you finish the concrete
35:54
you're gonna have enough men on the job to make sure that you have enough people working to finish it and then once the finish
36:01
is on, you're going to cure it, you're gonna spray on a clear curing compound. All right
36:05
So you have to put all that in there. I mean, I just, I'm sorry, but it only took me a minute less than a
36:10
minute to say it. It'll take you less than five minutes to write it in the contract. All right
36:14
So concrete, great product. Great. I mean, if it's put down right Merrill
36:19
uh I, I can take you, uh, if I, if you and I would meet for an ice cream Cone in Cincinnati
36:25
You, I'll come from New Hampshire. You come from Chicago. You got a much shorter drive
36:29
Five hours. I've got 15. Um, we'll go to a lames and we're gonna walk around that
36:34
that business district. It's called Oakley. And I'm gonna show you some concrete sidewalks that have been down for 50 60 70 years
36:42
All right, 50 60 70 years, they've had all kinds of salt on them
36:47
They don't look brand new, but they're not all crack and crumbling. All right. So it's a great product
36:52
All right, the precast concrete pavers, we'll talk about those real quickly. Those precast brick that come in
36:57
you know, these earth tones like gray, you know, gray and brown and red and tan
37:04
Um, those are just concrete. Well, guess what, where they're made at the factory
37:10
They, they're made in the same factory that they make concrete block. Guess what
37:14
They mix the concrete. They do everything right. They do it all right. They do everything right
37:19
So, they're typically, they're very strong and they're very durable. The strength of the
37:26
of the pavers depends on the base underneath it. So you have to put a gravel base in
37:32
It's got to be compacted. You have to put the pavers in a little bit of sand and one of the advantages of the pavers
37:37
is that if one breaks, you can replace it. Now, here's the problem with the pavers
37:42
I have pavers in my front sidewalk here at my own home. I did not build this house
37:46
I would have never put him in. Never when you get them new
37:51
they look amazing. They, they all one color and the reason they're one color is because when the concrete is being mixed
38:00
um, they, they put a dry pigment in it. You know, it's a lot like flower but just think of a dry pigment that could
38:07
be a brown or red or blue, what, whatever color doesn't matter. So that dry pigment
38:13
you know, gets wet and it's a lot like that cheap crappy whitewash that we just talked about
38:19
Um, so it coats all of the stones and all of the sand
38:23
which is why the, the pavers when they're new, they're all one color and they look
38:29
they look pretty nice just like blacktop roads. So, Steve, I, I got to believe you have asphalt roads over in the UK
38:36
So when they put down new blacktop roads, what color is it? It's black
38:40
I mean, black, black, black. All right. But the, what color does the road look
38:47
Five years later? It's gray. Why? Well, have you ever looked down at the black top in a parking lot
38:56
that, at the grocery store or guess what? I'm talking about? Black top that's been down five or six years
39:02
All that, that thin black asphalt has worn off the top of the stones
39:09
So you're the color of what you're seeing is the stones. So that's what happens to your concrete pavers
39:14
Meryl in, in five or six years. They're gonna look horrible, especially in Illinois because you're gonna be shoveling snow off of it
39:21
All right. Guess what paving brick is the exact, you know, has all the benefits of the clay pavers
39:28
But guess what, the color of the brick is solid all the way through
39:32
So, I prefer paving brick. And if you go to my ask the builder website and type in paving brick or brick patio
39:39
look at all the amazing photos of the brick patios I've done over the years and
39:44
and they're just ST they're gorgeous. I mean, I can't wait to build the next one for Cathy
39:49
I cannot wait. You know, I actually like doing it. So there's your tutorial on
39:54
uh, but the papers, uh, I can't tell you the cost if, if you've asked me that I'm gonna look
39:59
I'm gonna get caught up in the cuts in here in a second. But I
40:03
all the cost of everything are out the window. You know, the, the whole law of economic law of supply and demand is
40:09
is all out of kilter and everybody's paying too much for contractors
40:14
Uh, it's just a sad thing. So anyway, I can't talk about price
40:18
You just have to get bids. Uh, so we're getting caught up here
40:25
That's interesting that you, uh, were able to do that with Apple Cider vinegar that
40:30
that you, you got rid of a war? Very interesting. Um, yeah
40:35
vinegar will also attack the thin aluminum strips of the humidifier. Pet
40:38
It might, um, trying to think why acetic acid and aluminum. Um
40:43
I'd have to go back to my physical mystery book to see why. Um
40:47
all right, here's tech support. I just had a concrete patter installed last week in Western New York and that it's
40:53
um, it's not gonna cure. Uh Well, no, it, it, right now
40:57
um, it's actually kind of a good time of year tech. Um Yeah
41:02
exactly. Great Lennon. Uh Steve. Um So you would have, I would have been much more worried if you
41:08
if this, if it was now June or July and that's when they put this down and we got the hot sun beating down on
41:14
it. But this time of year, uh, no, uh you just need to keep it wet
41:19
Keep that, keep that concrete as wet as you can is all I can tell you
41:23
Um, you know, just, just keep it wet if it's raining. Great
41:27
Um, try to keep the salt off of it the first year if you can especially now
41:30
try, try not to put any salt on that concrete the first year because I don't know what strength it was poured at
41:36
There's all kinds of things. So, anyway, oh me, you're very welcome
41:41
Uh Thank you for watching, you know. So remember if you like what you hear gotta hit the like button
41:46
Um, you know, we gotta get a lot of likes, we need likes
41:50
Um, it, it, it helps, it really, really helps the live stream
41:54
Um, let's see, what else I wanna tell you about. Um, if you go to Buckingham Palace
42:00
the tarmac is red. I can't believe that. I wonder how they do that
42:04
Um, I'd like to see a photograph of that. Maybe I'll go online and try to find one
42:10
they could have you. I mean, I used my, I have photographs on my, um
42:15
on the website. I have my driveway back in Cincinnati was brown
42:19
So it's because I used brown stones. I had a brown what we call tar and ship driveway
42:25
Amazing. So you can, if, if they have paved around Buckingham Palace with tar and then they put red stones in it
42:32
that's why it would be red. So, um, uh, anyway, um, mailman just arrived by the way here here
42:42
Of course, this is nothing to Steve. He's, he's been in the dark for seven hours
42:46
Um It's pitch black here in New Hampshire right now. It's, it was pitch black 20 minutes ago
42:51
So we're now what, three weeks away from the solstice. So, oh
42:56
that I got a great story for you. You're gonna love this story
43:02
It's from a woman up in uh Alaska. Her name is Heather
43:08
So Heather Heather emailed me. Uh I guess it was yesterday. Um The days of all
43:16
just kind of compressed. And she had, she had a problem with a three way switch in her home
43:25
And I have a, I have two videos on the website about three way switches
43:29
One I recorded, oh, my gosh, 1415 years ago. And it's the
43:34
it's the top three way switch video on youtube. I mean, it's been watched more than any other one and I
43:40
I think I did a really good job at it. All right. So she, she then I did another video about three years ago
43:48
I got this idea in the middle of the night there. I, I constantly have this, this issue and I got all these questions from
43:54
people where they had taken a three way switch apart. They wanted to put a new three way switch in
44:01
they just wanted to put one in. So they take the cover plate off, they turn the power off
44:06
They, you know, they unscrewed, they take the wires off, off the switch and they
44:12
they don't pay attention to what they're doing and then they put the wire that the three wires on the new switch and it doesn't
44:17
work. Right. All right. So this is crazy. I had a dream of vision
44:24
Um I could talk about that at a whole another. I, I, when I was younger
44:28
when I heard that people saw visions, I just thought that was the craziest thing in the world
44:32
Like no way Oh, guess what? It's true. All right. So I've seen like four of them
44:36
All right. So, um, I had this vision about how to create a video showing you how to fix that switch
44:45
But if you go to youtube, there's all these other electricians who tell you all this complex stuff to do
44:51
Um, you know, you gotta have a voltage tester and you gotta do the
44:56
you know, like the average person. Are you kidding me? The average consumer is terrified of electric
45:03
There is no way they're gonna be touching a flipping hot wire and just like that
45:08
I mean, they'd be jump like that, like, ah, like no way. All right
45:12
So I had to figure out a way. So the vision showed me here's how you could do it without having the electric on and
45:18
you can actually do it blindfolded. You could do, you could do what I, I did in the video blindfolded if you want
45:23
Uh, so what happens is you mark the wires 12 and three and
45:29
um, you, then you, you put the wires on in order, you know
45:33
like, and it doesn't matter where you start, but you put the number one wire on one screw
45:37
then you put the number two wire on the screw next to it. Then you put the number three wire on the
45:42
on the other screw and then you check and see if it works. It works awesome
45:46
You know, you had a one in three chance of getting it right. All right. So if it doesn't work
45:50
then you just start playing musical chairs and you start rotating the screws around to the different positions
45:56
see how that would work. So, the number one screw, number one wire would go where two was
46:01
Number two goes where number three was and number three goes where number one was
46:05
All right. Check it if it works. amazing. If it doesn't, you do it one more time
46:10
And I had a guarantee on the third time, it's gonna work perfect. All right, I'm not gonna explain why
46:14
So she did it and she said, I it worked awesome. But then she
46:17
she said, but, but I then went and took apart 23 wish switches and they're not working
46:24
right? What do I do? And so I, I told her, I said, go watch my original three way switch video and it's all gonna
46:32
make sense. You're gonna know exactly what to do. So she did and she
46:36
and I said, give me a full report when you, when you get it done, this is the I'm giving the payoff
46:40
This is really important. So this afternoon she, while I'm in town
46:45
she emails me and she goes, she sends me this really nice email and she says
46:50
oh Tim, I love you. I have a lot of women who say that
46:54
All right, I I'm, and I know it's not romantic love. So anyway, so they
46:58
they, um, they, she said it worked, it worked. I'm so happy
47:02
Um And what she did, this is really important. I'm gonna write a column about this
47:08
So she knew which wire at the one switch was the common or what we call the hot
47:18
wire that is hot all the time from the panel. And because she knew that she could be watching my second video
47:26
she could immediately hook up that switch correctly. So now she's got the other switch and you know
47:33
what, what, what she did smart heather, she just, she said I just did what um I did in you did in the first video
47:41
I just started rotating the screw the wires around until I got it right. Everything was fine
47:46
You know, whereas what you typically would tell people is, well, unfortunately, you got to figure out which wire goes up to the light and
47:51
that's hard to do for the average person. So anyway, really cool success story
47:56
Uh You know, I love, love, love getting those emails from, from people who have
48:01
um, who've had a victory, I guess that's the best way to put it
48:05
My father-in-law had a saying, I didn't understand it years ago and he would say it
48:09
He, he had a saying that success breeds success, success breeds success
48:15
And I'm like, what? But it just, it just, he just meant that
48:20
you know, when you have a success in something all of a sudden you, your confidence starts to rise and then you do something a
48:26
little tougher and your confidence just keeps going up and up and up and up and up and eventually you can do just about anything
48:32
All right. So that was really cool to see Heather have success there
48:37
You know, she got her switches working. She didn't electrocute herself. It didn't cost her any money
48:42
She didn't have to hire an electrician. I mean, does it get any better than that
48:48
All right, let's get caught up. Um, glory says you might have to pressure wash the pavement
48:58
to keep it consistent. Don't know what long term damage it causes if any
49:03
I'm assuming that you're talking about the pavers. I don't know. But if you pressure wash those concrete pavers that I talked about a few
49:12
minutes ago with Merrill, you're absolutely gonna wash all that, the colored cement paste off
49:18
I mean, the pavers are gonna look horrible. I just don't even think about doing it
49:23
Um, will, wants to know. Did I get any snow yet? Uh, so will it
49:27
um, I'll give you a weather report. We had a dusting of snow
49:32
What's today? Today's Tuesday, uh, I guess on Saturday, maybe Friday, I mean
49:40
and I just mean, a dusting. Well, there are places in the shade where it's still there
49:44
So it's, it's not gotten much above 32 and it's been getting below freezing each night
49:52
So we have not had any accumulating snow that I've had to move with a snow blower or a shovel that's coming
49:58
That's gonna be here. We should have, uh, if you live in an area not un unlike New Hampshire
50:05
uh, what, what I would consider the snow belt here. This is, I never experienced this in Cincinnati
50:09
I lived in Cincinnati for 55 years and there it would snow and maybe the snow would hang around for three or four days that
50:18
it would temperature would bump up to the forties and it just goes away
50:22
I mean, Cincinnati winter is, it's this horrible gray brown, ugly winter
50:27
It's horrible. It's horrible. All right. Sometimes you don't see the sun for a month
50:32
New Hampshire, huh? Here's what happens in New Hampshire. So, it'll, it's gonna snow
50:41
What, uh, November 30th today. Uh, there's a really good chance with
50:45
we will get our, what I call it the cover snow before Christmas
50:48
Typically it happens the second week of December and that might be a seven inch snowfall
50:54
And that's the last time you see the ground. You, that's the last time you see the snow or the
50:59
the grass until April because we just keep getting more snow. So we'll
51:05
we'll get some snow. Maybe we'll get a little rain so the snow gets a little thinner
51:09
But it just, typically here at my home there's always 18 inches to 2 ft of snow on the ground on a typical winter
51:16
So, but the, the, the smaller ponds are, have already got a glaze of ice on them
51:22
So, um, the, the, the lake, the small ponds and small lakes are starting to ice over
51:28
Not the big lakes. No, there's, they have too much fetch, you know
51:32
you know what fetch is? It's like that. What? It's the, it's the open area that wind can blow across
51:37
So when, when there's a lot of fetch on a lake, it's really hard for it to freeze over
51:41
I mean, you have to get the water really cold and then you have to have a couple of nights of no wind and then
51:46
it freezes instantly. All right, let's keep going here in the comments
51:51
Thank you for the comments, by the way. Thank you for the questions. Thank you for the likes
51:54
Um I really appreciate it. Um Redstone. That's exactly right. Uh I will
51:59
I'm gonna look that up, but I want to look that up. It's so beautiful. You can think about this
52:04
You can do paving. I've talked about it in past columns. You could have a green driveway
52:09
you have a brown driveway, you could have a red driveway. Uh You could have a gold driveway
52:16
You just have to get the right stones and then because the way they used to build roads black like the modern black top that
52:22
you see put down on your roads both in the UK and in the US, that's modern
52:27
They didn't have that 100 and 20 years ago. The way they paved roads
52:32
it's just like in the old Charlie Chaplin movies, the, the comedies
52:36
you know, they would say, remember it's always just a joke. There would be a sign that says Fresh Car and here's Charlie driving
52:42
you know, you know, grinning driving and then all of a sudden the next vision is
52:47
is his car, his old car halfway up and, you know, buried in deep tars
52:52
So that's, that was a joke. Um, with the way they built roads is they would put crushed gravel down
52:58
compact it, get it the exact shape they want it. Then they'd come in and they'd spray tar on it about
53:03
I don't know, quarter inch thick. Uh And then they would broadcast stones into it
53:08
These very small chips that are about the size of, um, uh
53:12
yeah, about the size of my baby fingernail and very uniform chips
53:16
no sand in it, just the chips and then they would roll it with a compactor
53:20
you know, like a roller and then they would brush off any loose ones and then they would put another layer of tar and more
53:26
chips down. That's how the pavement used to be made and that's how it's done probably around Buckingham Palace
53:31
That's how it was done on my driveway. I did a lot of driveways for customers this way because they're so unique
53:36
They're so beautiful. All right. Um, yes. Thumbs, yes, thank you. Will
53:42
I do. I like thumbs up and ice cream. Um, exactly. Same there in Maine
53:46
Yeah, I would think so. You're just a couple of weeks away from your, your cover snow, uh
53:49
when it snows in Britain. Nothing works. Everything breaks. Why would that be Steve
53:55
Um, maybe, I mean, I would think up north, uh, up in Scotland
54:00
up, I guess up in Ireland, up, up in the northern part of the UK. I mean, they, they got to be used to snow
54:04
They, they must get snow up there and stick around for a while. But I know down in London
54:09
down in southern UK, I, I can't believe that you get, I, I bet you that it's like Cincinnati where it snows
54:15
sticks around for a while, then it's gone. That would be my guess. Um
54:20
uh, Jack wants to know, uh, let's go to Steve. We have
54:25
we have still have cobblestone from the Victorian Times. Yeah, I don't doubt it
54:28
Um, maybe I'll bring it. I've got a cobblestone that I absconded from the city of Chicago
54:34
Um, that's probably was put down probably in the 18 hundreds. Um
54:39
amazing. Uh, iiii, I want to build a new house and I'm gonna have part of my driveway is gonna be cobblestone
54:44
I, I've always wanted a cobblestone driveway. You know, granite cobblestones. You can still get them pretty affordable
54:50
Um, Jack wants to know. Why did I leave? Cincinnati? Oh, are you kidding me
54:57
Well, let's just, we'll, we'll start for one. what would you say if I told you
55:07
that the house I'm living in here in New Hampshire, which is on a lake. I mean, I've got a lake house
55:11
All right. I live on the western shore of the third largest lake in New Hampshire
55:17
Beautiful lake. Big lake. What would you say if I told you I got the house for free
55:26
I mean, if, if, if, if, if somebody told you, hey, Jack
55:30
if you move up to New Hampshire, you could live, you could sell your house in Cincinnati
55:34
And then, but the house you get up there is gonna be free. You'd have to go
55:39
I'm, I'm all in, man. What? Let's call up United moving right now
55:43
right? So why did that happen? New Hampshire does not have a sales tax
55:51
New Hampshire does not have an income tax. Um And at the time I moved up here what I was paying the state
56:00
of Ohio each month in income tax was more than the amount of my mortgage taxes
56:09
and insurance on this lake house. So you tell me, uh and then I'll
56:17
I'll keep one down the list. Um We don't have any pollution up here
56:22
Um The cri the crime. It's like non-existent. All right. Um Once again
56:31
no sales tax, no income tax. Uh, here the weather is really interesting in the winter time
56:40
If we get a, we get a cloudy day or we get a storm. Generally the next day the sky is so blue
56:46
it hurts your eyes to look at it. All right. That's not in Cincinnati
56:50
It just stays gray for days and weeks at a time. It's crazy. Um
56:56
every time I go back to Cincinnati, I, I get, it's getting worse
57:00
Actually. I have more anxiety about driving in Cincinnati. Um, there's so much traffic
57:08
so much congestion and, and what happened is I had become numb to that
57:14
I thought that was the standard, guess what? It's not, you can move to other places
57:23
Like, like to me, a traffic jam in, in New, in New Hampshire is anything over 10 cars
57:29
Like, if I see 10 cars backed up behind a traffic light, I go, oh my God
57:33
we're never gonna get through. All right. So no heat and humidity up here
57:39
Well, I take it back in Cincinnati as you. Well know if you live there or many places in the Midwest beginning
57:47
June 1st until the middle of September, you might be able to count on temperatures in the upper eighties with a due point at night
57:56
that maybe, maybe gets down to 65 maybe. All right. It's sticky
58:03
it's humid, it's miserable. All right. I hated that. I had to work in it
58:07
I hated it once again. I thought that was the normal. Guess what? It's not here in New Hampshire average summer day
58:14
I don't know, 78 degrees with a dew point of 55 it gets
58:18
And what that means. You, here's, here's what you need to remember about dew points, dew point is what the temperature drops to at night
58:25
So at night time you're sleeping with a blanket on because we don't use air conditioning up here
58:31
we keep the doors and windows open. We've got screens in them and you just get this beautiful
58:34
wonderful clean air and it's absolutely flipping amazing. And also the, the last reason I've been to all the states all in the lower 48
58:43
except for one. Uh I have not been to North Dakota, but I already know that North Dakota is a carbon copy of South Dakota
58:52
for the most part. And in my opinion, New Hampshire is the second most beautiful state and the lower 44
59:01
and the four Commonwealths that we have think about that. New Hampshire
59:05
the number two most beautiful state. If you've not been here, come up here next September
59:09
you might not go home. All right. So that's a very long explanation of why
59:14
So, but you need to know this. So back 47 years ago
59:18
Kathy and I honeymooned up here and when I, when we both got here
59:22
we both said, oh my gosh, this place is so beautiful. We need to live here one day
59:27
Well, I never gave up on that dream, you know. So it just took
59:32
let's see, 22 it took 33 years to make it happen. So
59:36
anyway, that's the long answer. I hope, I hope you enjoyed it
59:40
Um, uh London is the world's largest, biggest car park. I don't doubt it
59:47
All right. Here we go. We got some great questions here and thank you so much for your patience
59:51
I, I'm sorry, I'm so long winded about some of these things. Uh I do
59:55
you know, I, I get to show you a part of me. Now, you understand why I came to New Hampshire and you
59:59
if you've never been here, I'm telling you, you gotta come and here's the best time to come by the way
1:00:04
Best time to come to New Hampshire are the, is the two week period uh after Labor Day
1:00:12
But like that come up here the Tuesday after Labor Day and stay for two weeks because you know
1:00:19
towards the end of September, the leaf people start to show up. You know, those are all the tourists that come to see our beautiful
1:00:25
beautiful trees. But in September we have our best weather, the best weather
1:00:33
the lake water is still warm, you can swim with no trouble
1:00:37
Uh You don't get cold. Uh All of the attractions are open so they don't even though it's Labor Day
1:00:44
everything is still open because they're waiting for the tourist to come to leaf papers
1:00:49
So there's hardly any traffic at, at the tourist attractions up in the White Mountains
1:00:53
September is the time to come. All right, let's get caught up
1:00:58
Um, Steve says I can stay awake all night wondering how a man that drives a snowplow gets to work
1:01:05
Uh, because they have snow plows on their trucks that they drive to go get the big plow
1:01:10
That's how they do it. Um Also, that's a great question, Steve
1:01:17
So the way they do it here in New Hampshire will, may, they may do it a little differently in Maine where
1:01:21
where, where will lives? So, at least in my town, the, the public works guys take it very seriously and they
1:01:32
um, the, the, the police will call them out. I mean, once
1:01:37
once they know what the forecast is and once the snow gets about two inches deep
1:01:41
they're, they're, they were going to get the big trucks. All right. So they plow the roads through the storm
1:01:47
you know? I mean, um, so it's not like the snow gets a foot deep and then they go drive to get the truck
1:01:54
No, they're already plowing when it's two inches deep or so. Uh
1:01:58
so that's why that's how they get there because two inches of snow is nothing
1:02:01
And just about everybody here in New Hampshire has got four wheel drive
1:02:05
I mean, you just, you, you, you've either got four wheel drive or you've got all wheel drive
1:02:09
you know, some, some kind of vehicle like that. All right. Um, well
1:02:15
Leon, he uses a four wheel drive vehicle. Yes, exactly. Right. There you go. Will already answered for me
1:02:19
Thanks will. Um, glory. I'm constantly getting electro stack socks in the bedroom
1:02:25
Uh Is it the carpet the socks I'm wearing or is it because I'm rubbing my hands
1:02:29
No glory. It's because the humidity in your bedroom in your house is too low
1:02:35
So you can, you can minimize the electrostatic shocks by raising the humidity by an inexpensive hydrometer
1:02:45
to monitor it. I don't want you getting the humidity any higher than 50% inside your home
1:02:51
but once you get it up to about 40% humidity that, that should go away
1:02:56
um, that should go away completely. Um, Becky, Tim, you've given me hope
1:03:01
I'm afraid to leave the house in Kansas City. Um, yeah, that great
1:03:08
Exactly. Becky. Exactly. Look what's ok. So we're gonna get off a little tangent here
1:03:13
Um, because I can always edit this part out if I want to, um
1:03:18
look, you know, Steve, I know you're in the UK. I don't know what you're seeing uh about in your news about what's going on
1:03:26
here in the United States. I'm telling you that crime is out of control in certain cities and
1:03:34
and it's a, um, it's not a conspiracy theory what's happening. There are people
1:03:39
there are big people and I'm not going to mention their names that are trying everything in their power to destroy the United States of
1:03:46
America. They hate it. They hate our country. And so some of these people have huge sums of money and what they've done systematically is
1:03:55
they've gone into some of these bigger cities and they have, they have supported and put in district attorney candidates who
1:04:04
also hate America. And so the best way to, to rule a country is to create chaos
1:04:11
All right, seriously, just create chaos. Because the first function of government
1:04:18
the first and primary function of any government, be it a town government
1:04:23
a county, a state, a na national is to keep the citizens safe
1:04:29
That goes back to Steve. You're the man, you're the man. I mean
1:04:33
ho how, how many, how many castles were there in Europe? I mean
1:04:40
in the UK back in the year 1000? And what was the primary purpose of the castle
1:04:47
It kept the, not only the king and the queen and the other higher ups
1:04:51
but the people, other people in the castle were kept safe and
1:04:55
and like if all of a sudden bad times came, all the small folk who lived out around the castle
1:04:59
they would pour into the castle behind the walls. All right. So safety
1:05:05
And I'm here to tell you like in New York City, you can commit a very serious crime right now and you'll be back out
1:05:12
on the street with no bail in, in hours. It's insane. Now
1:05:18
we don't have that problem here where I live in central New Hampshire. It's very rural. Um And
1:05:23
and also one of the things up here in New Hampshire, many people
1:05:29
they take the second amendment very seriously. And the bad guys know that the bad guys know that if they come
1:05:38
and break into somebody's house here in central New Hampshire or northern
1:05:42
you go, go anywhere from central Hampshire up. There's a good chance they're coming out of the house in a bag
1:05:49
right? So they go, you know what, I'm not, uh I'm not gonna break in up there
1:05:55
I'm just gonna go down to Massachusetts and break in those houses. All right
1:05:58
So, um, anyway, so yes. Um I know I'm getting off on a tangent
1:06:04
I'm sorry. So who, who said that was that you Merrill? Um No
1:06:08
not Merrill. It was glory. Yeah, I know Becky. Becky, right? You're afraid to leave your house in Kansas City
1:06:14
That's insane. That is being a prisoner in your home. Are you kidding me
1:06:20
So, why don't you? Maybe you should move to New Hampshire. Maybe you should come up here next summer and I'll take you around for
1:06:25
a few days and show you how beautiful and safe it is. I could leave. I could go out to my truck right now on
1:06:30
my driveway. We never lock, I never lock my truck. I could put $500 in cash on the seat in my truck and it'll be
1:06:38
there a month later. It's crazy. I do that in Cincinnati. It would be gone in an hour
1:06:45
All right. Uh. Oh, cool. Um, will worked on the main turnpike
1:06:52
What do you know? Yeah. You know exactly what's going on. Exactly. Yeah, you have to sleep in the truck too
1:06:57
Exactly. Um, you see everything over here. Good and, yeah, I know
1:07:03
I know it's happening but guess what? Our media is not reporting. What happens in the UK
1:07:09
Yeah. Yeah. Uh Yeah. Ignoring the magna car. How could they ignore that
1:07:17
Are you kidding me? All right, Gloria, the vent is not heating up the room properly
1:07:22
Could that? Um, well, glory. Let's now we're back to your uh static electricity
1:07:27
So I talked in a past live stream about how that works
1:07:32
So I did a video about static pressure. Um If, if you don't
1:07:39
if, if that room is not warm enough, um, that's also a problem because the cooler the air is
1:07:47
the less moisture you can put in it. So that's a problem. Uh What you might try is you could try a trick that my
1:07:54
mom used to do when I was a little kid. Um, we had forced air heat
1:07:59
She would take a bowl of water just like a simple bowl or you could put like a shallow pan but
1:08:05
but she would put this bowl right over the heat duct. So that the warm air would come around the bowl
1:08:11
it wouldn't block it, but it would evaporate the water into the air to
1:08:16
to make it. So we didn't shock each other. So you can just do something as simple as that
1:08:21
Um, you can have some house plants, house plants and put a lot of moisture in there
1:08:26
So, uh, you know, just put out, put out bowls of water
1:08:30
put out pots of water in, in the bedroom and anything that
1:08:34
so that the water is just evaporating into the air. All right. That's gonna help a lot
1:08:38
Um, yeah, you could, yeah, well, glory could use a room humidifier
1:08:43
Exactly. They will. Is exactly right. You could get those inexpensive humidifiers just made for one room
1:08:49
You could try that. Um, great. This is why I love, I so love this because you get to help
1:08:56
You get, you, you come up with great suggestions as well that I love that
1:09:01
You know, because sometimes my brain's going somewhere else and, and I, you know
1:09:05
I, I don't think it through all the time. You probably can tell that. Um
1:09:11
uh, yes, it is gonna happen. But, yeah, let's, let's kind of back off the politics
1:09:15
I mean, I, I kind of went off the rails so let's stop talking about the politics
1:09:19
But yes, we need to have a private conversation one day, Steve
1:09:23
I'm happy to do that via Skype or Zoom or whatever. Happy to do that
1:09:29
Same with you will. Whatever. Um ah Doctor Troll man. Yes, I do have a
1:09:36
I, I can do you one better than a photo. Um I have a video on my youtube channel here without a mustache
1:09:44
All right. So it is um it's, it's a snow blower. So
1:09:50
so go to my channel and type and, and if you can or, or just go to youtube and type snowblower and maybe add the
1:09:57
word craftsman, craftsman, snowblower, Tim Carter, those four words. And you should see a video
1:10:05
Uh I think I'm wearing some a black um ll bean ski pants and a red shirt
1:10:10
I think in it, I can't remember but you're gonna see a video of me without a mustache and I can tell you that story
1:10:17
It's pretty funny story. I, and we recorded that video uh 12 years ago here at my house in New Hampshire
1:10:24
So Gloria, thank you. Uh Thank you so much for being here
1:10:33
Um All right, longest live stream today, an hour and 10 minutes gonna be an hour and 11 here in a minute
1:10:41
I just can't believe it's gone that long. Um I apologize if I am kind of boring you or go off the rails
1:10:50
I don't know. I, I just have so much fun and I, like I said, I
1:10:54
I live off of your, your questions and your comments. I mean
1:10:58
that's what makes this so much fun. I just, it's so much fun for me
1:11:02
So uh All right, let's just wrap it up here. I I'll be back tomorrow and I'm gonna have a surprise for you tomorrow
1:11:09
So, uh oh, here we go. Well, well, so here heres last comment
1:11:14
So Doctor Troll man says, why are there no more young crescent
1:11:18
Well, there are, all right, there are, but the trouble is they're harder to find and it
1:11:26
it, here's my opinion of what's going on if we went back in time to
1:11:34
I don't know, let's go back 100 years ago. So that would have been 1921 people who
1:11:41
who got jobs and especially tradespeople, you know, it could be bricklayers
1:11:46
carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, tinsmiths, they considered that a vocation. All
1:11:56
right. So, so go look up the definition of the word vocation
1:12:02
It's a completely different definition than the word job. All right. So we
1:12:12
our society, I don't know how it is across the rest of the world. I would like to think it's not this way in the
1:12:19
UK Steve, but over the past 30 or 40 years and this is where
1:12:26
you know, I get my conspiracy hat on. Um I think there's been a very active movement to
1:12:35
force young people into college so they could be indoctrinated where, uh and also at the same time
1:12:44
they, they started to slowly get away from vocational training in high schools
1:12:50
You go back in time and this was before I was in high school back in the forties and fifties
1:12:54
Just about every single high school had a shop class or had home economics class
1:12:59
Like the, the women, the young women had to take home, home economics
1:13:03
the, the, the guys, the men and the young boys took shop. My opinion
1:13:07
everybody should take everything. In other words, I feel cheated. I know I can learn it right now
1:13:13
I, I still can do it. Um, but I, I would like to know how to sew a button on
1:13:17
I, I would like to know how to cook much better than I can cook. Now, I can cook but not really well
1:13:22
All right. So, um, I didn't get taught how to do that. Yes, I know
1:13:26
I could have taken the time to do it myself. I didn't. All right. I could say the same thing about you
1:13:30
You, you could have taken the time to do how to learn how to use a framing square and frame a roof. All right
1:13:33
Well, you didn't too bad. All right. So it doesn't matter. So to answer your question
1:13:40
I think there has been a systematic, um, plan a, a, uh
1:13:49
a, a devious, it's devious to, to, first of all, to put more young people in college than should be and to demonize
1:13:57
to demonize blue collar workers. Meaning, oh, you're just a plumber? You don't have a college degree
1:14:05
Are you kidding me? You know. So why would you want to do that
1:14:10
That's what's going on. That's why I think we don't have more tradesmen where it should just be the opposite
1:14:17
You know, I think that, that we should give um in grade school
1:14:23
I think what should happen is kids are given testing and they test people for hand eye co ordination and they introduce this
1:14:31
In other words, I think that shop class and all these other things should be introduced in grade school as well as home economics
1:14:38
And that at a young age, a person, a young person might go
1:14:43
I love cutting wood, who I love this. And so he becomes a carpenter or I love soldering or I love cooking
1:14:52
whatever. So, but that's not happening here in the education system in America
1:14:56
That's the root of the problem. So that if that's the answer to your question
1:15:00
Um Yeah, exactly. Right. Um No, no to answer. Do high school
1:15:09
No, they do not still teach shop classes. That's a really interesting
1:15:12
you know what? Well, I mean, it's a tough time of year to get out
1:15:16
But you know what that would be if you, if you wanted to do something pretty interesting one night
1:15:22
why don't you go to a local school board meeting? And it could just be your town school board meeting and
1:15:28
and especially the school board that's in charge of the high school and, and they let you speak for three minutes
1:15:33
You know, you can go up to the podium and then you ask them
1:15:38
well, before you make a fool of yourself, make sure your high school is not teaching shop
1:15:42
which is easy to do. Just go to the school website. But then if they're not teaching it
1:15:46
then go to the school board meeting and ask them, why are you not teaching shop
1:15:53
Why are you not teaching home home economics and just shut your mouth
1:15:58
Let them answer you and then report back what they say. Um Yeah
1:16:08
exactly. Well, we're gonna need tech people as we move forward. Everything is much more tech savvy
1:16:14
I get that. So, but anyway, um all right. So I'm out of gas
1:16:21
I, and, and I, I'm afraid that if I stay here much longer, I'm really gonna go off the rails
1:16:25
All right. So I don't wanna do that. I try not to go off the rails. Ok
1:16:29
But you know what happens when you get as old as me and, and you see what's going on and then it
1:16:35
and it affects my vertical. I mean, seriously, you know, I'm talking home improvement but dag on it
1:16:42
there are things that are happening outside my sphere that affected and it
1:16:50
it upsets me a lot. So uh Steve. Good night to you
1:16:54
buddy. Bye, Doctor Troll, man. Um Yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna get off here too
1:16:58
So thanks so much for your attention. Thanks. For being here. Thanks for telling me about the
1:17:03
the red paving around Buckingham Palace. I did not know that. So I can't wait to see a photograph of that
1:17:08
All right. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna head off here. Remember if you didn't hit like yet? Please do
1:17:12
please tell all of your friends uh about the live stream. Uh We're trying to get
1:17:18
we're trying to get more traction, get more people to watch it live if possible. So
1:17:22
just do whatever you can to promote it if you like it. I, I would appreciate it as simple as that
1:17:27
Another phone. Thank you. Yeah. Well, thank you. Will. It's always great. It's so great to see Will and Steve and all the
1:17:34
you know, all the, uh, the regulars. I, I just, um, I'm building these relationships with you
1:17:40
They're valuable to me and I just, um, I really appreciate you being here
1:17:44
I seriously do. So, uh, uh, I do not, uh, in fact
1:17:49
I don't, I've never even heard of that show. I'll have to look it up. Essential Craftsman
1:17:53
If it's on the HD TV network, that's why I don't watch it. I can't
1:17:56
I cannot watch shows on that network because they're not serious. At least
1:18:01
you know, most of the shows are not serious. They're, they're entertainment, there's a difference between entertainment and education
1:18:07
All right. So, most of those shows are just entertainment and, um
1:18:12
I'm not, I'm not gonna subject my brain to that. Uh ok
1:18:16
All right. I'll look it up. I'll look it up. Thank you. All right. So, um and oh
1:18:20
yeah, share tips like that all the time. So, thanks so much for watching. Uh I'll have a surprise for you tomorrow
1:18:26
So if you can tune in live, it'll be fun. We'll have a little fun tomorrow
1:18:30
So I thanks so much for being here. I will have a good night
1:18:34
Uh I hope you will too. And once again, thanks for being here
