0:00
and we're going live right now it's
0:03
awesome um let me type a message to my
0:05
friend
0:09
Bill uh this time this interface worked
0:12
a little different this time um it let
0:14
me it just automatically went live it's
0:17
crazy
0:20
anyway all right let's get going
0:23
here um today I want to talk a little
0:25
bit about um exterior paint and right
0:30
now it's really kind of cool this
0:31
interface I can tell that um I can tell
0:34
that nobody's watching yet not a problem
0:36
takes a while for people to uh come on
0:39
board here we go so today we're going to
0:41
talk a little bit about the best
0:42
exterior paint um I did a survey of my
0:46
20,000 newsletter people uh over the
0:50
last few days and got a lot of really
0:53
great suggestions for things that you
0:55
want to to discover and to learn about
0:59
and quite a few people wanted to know
1:01
about the best exterior paint and it's
1:03
really kind of an interesting topic um
1:07
remember that you can when you're live
1:10
and when we're live uh you have the
1:12
ability in the chat box you can send me
1:15
questions so feel free to do that and be
1:18
happy to answer them uh you know during
1:21
the during the uh the uh the broadcast
1:24
uh my intention with these is I only
1:27
really only want to stay live for about
1:29
15 minutes or so uh I don't want to
1:32
stretch out the topic uh I think what's
1:34
going to what's going to happen is that
1:36
people will start to ask a lot of
1:40
questions and then that might cause the
1:42
the uh the broadcast to stretch out a
1:44
little bit so if you do have a question
1:45
about best exterior you know exterior
1:48
paints go ahead and ask them now uh so
1:50
here's what we want to know about paint
1:52
the first thing you need to know about
1:53
paint is that it's just colored blue I
1:56
know that sounds crazy uh think about
2:00
when you take a bottle of glue um you
2:03
know it's it's about the same
2:05
consistency of paint uh it's sticky you
2:08
already know that paint's sticky because
2:09
it sticks to your hands it sticks to
2:11
your clothes it sticks to whatever you
2:13
put it on as long as you prepare the
2:14
surface right and uh that's exactly what
2:18
it's supposed to do all right
2:20
so that means if you want to have an
2:24
exterior paint that really works well uh
2:27
you want to have one that has a really
2:30
good glue component and in the paint
2:34
industry that's kind of called the the
2:36
the resin you know uh that if you look
2:40
on the paint can label like I have one
2:42
here I found an older can of paint um
2:45
and right here on the label although
2:48
this was a custom mixed color and this
2:49
is a label they put on at the paint
2:51
store but underneath it right here on
2:54
this side it it says what's in the paint
2:59
and in this particular paint the sh and
3:00
Williams duration it says that it's an
3:03
acrylic polymer all right so what does
3:05
that mean that that's the resin
3:08
so paint comes in different grades
3:11
different types and we're just talking
3:13
about the ones that you might get at a
3:15
paint store uh at one of the big box
3:17
stores we're not talking about the
3:18
special day Coatings that are used in
3:21
industry that are used on your car those
3:24
are very very special paints all right
3:27
very expensive so
3:30
the ones that you might use inside your
3:32
home or outside your home they generally
3:35
come in three or four classifications
3:37
the cheapest paint it will have a what's
3:40
called a vinyl acetate resin all right
3:43
so the vinyl acetate that's the same
3:45
thing as like Carpenters glue all right
3:49
that's a vinyl acetate glue uh and
3:52
Carpenters glue is very good I mean it
3:54
you know you can use it and put wood
3:56
together and wood will stay together for
3:57
a long time um the next grade up is
4:01
acrylic so like 30 40 years ago acrylic
4:04
paints were considered uh the best of
4:08
the ball I mean if you had a 100%
4:10
acrylic paint uh it was really high
4:13
quality did a really good job and
4:15
acrylic paints even today still do a
4:18
pretty good job uh in my opinion the
4:22
best paints are the ones that have a
4:24
urethane component all right so think
4:27
about urethane have you ever if you've
4:30
ever brushed on urethane on wood or some
4:33
surface uh you know how sticky it is I
4:36
mean
4:37
urethane is is it's extremely sticky I
4:41
mean it bonds and you can't hardly get
4:43
it off so years ago I mean this is going
4:47
back 20 25 years ago this particular
4:49
brand of Sheron Williams paint called
4:53
duration was made with a urethane resin
4:56
but they changed it up uh probably about
4:59
10 years ago go and they they they made
5:01
a new line in in the Sheron Williams
5:04
line called Emerald that is the like the
5:07
line and emerald paint if you look on
5:11
the label or if you talk to the paint
5:13
store manager or go to the Sher Williams
5:16
website you'll probably discover it's
5:18
got a urethane resin so those are the
5:21
type of paints you want to use Outdoors
5:24
all right they they just are fantastic
5:26
is all I can tell you they work really
5:28
well uh you can get them on Amazon um I
5:32
have links on my website as The Bu a
5:34
website to urethane porch paints so in
5:37
the old days like could go to old old
5:39
houses that had a covered front porch
5:41
they would typically paint that porch
5:43
floor and porch plank porch paints
5:46
needed to be very very durable and um
5:50
the
5:51
um so now if you got a porch and you
5:55
want to paint it you want to use a your
5:56
thing paint all right remember I just
5:58
want to let you know um there's somebody
6:01
uh hi Tim how hey I'm doing great how
6:03
how are you doing it's great to uh great
6:05
to have you here if you have questions
6:07
remember you can always ask them in the
6:09
chat that's the whole point um we're
6:11
trying to stay on topic here uh try not
6:13
to stray too far away from exterior
6:15
paints if you have questions about how
6:17
to install the paint what the best
6:20
conditions to paint under um you know I
6:23
can jump into that for you happy to do
6:25
that um all right let me read this
6:27
question I like the information I'd like
6:29
more information about apps uh or links
6:31
to get more informed thanks I appreciate
6:33
it um well
6:36
um I don't know if there's a painting
6:38
app I think I think if you need a lot
6:41
more information about how to paint
6:42
exterior homes or paint anything I
6:45
probably have 20 or 30 columns on my ask
6:47
the builder website that that tell you
6:49
everything you ever need to know about
6:51
painting uh and and and what I've
6:53
discovered over all the years of doing
6:55
it so I would suggest that you go to my
6:57
askthebuilder.com website start there uh
7:02
okay let's go ahead and talk a little
7:04
bit about um the best conditions to
7:07
paint under in other words if you're if
7:09
you had to wave a magic wand and you
7:11
could pick the best day to paint what
7:14
would it be my guess is you might say
7:17
wow I would like to paint uh with it 85
7:21
degrees outside uh sunny and um maybe a
7:25
little bit of a breeze all right so
7:28
that's not a good time time to paint
7:30
it's also not a good time to paint when
7:32
it's 40° and going to drop to uh 32 or
7:36
28 at night uh that's another thing make
7:39
sure when you're going to paint I know
7:41
it sounds crazy a lot of people don't do
7:43
it um they right here so the read the
7:47
label on the paint can read it I'm
7:49
serious it only takes a few minutes and
7:51
it tells you how to get the best results
7:53
all right and typically they'll have on
7:55
the label um the temperature variation
7:59
meaning that it's not a good idea to
8:02
really paint you know below
8:04
40° uh just don't do it you're you're
8:07
pressing your luck I saw somebody do it
8:09
here in my own town just two or three
8:11
months ago I was driving to town I I
8:13
know it was in the 40s and I know it was
8:16
going to drop a little freezing that
8:17
night and somebody's outside painting
8:19
their house just like I thought wow all
8:21
that labor and material you're probably
8:23
going to waste it's probably going to
8:24
peel off in the spring here's the
8:27
deal almost all paints today that you're
8:29
going to use like this one uh any other
8:31
paint I I just keep I don't want to have
8:33
a bunch of paint cans here um they're
8:35
going to be water-based all right so the
8:38
water is the vehicle in the paint it's
8:41
it's what allows you toh deliver it and
8:44
put it on and then of course the water
8:47
evaporates and it leaves behind all the
8:49
solid materials and all the chemicals in
8:51
the paint that create the glue just like
8:54
regular glue think about it like if you
8:56
take the really you know cheap uh kids
8:59
glue the white glue the kidss use in
9:00
school uh it's got water in it uh they
9:03
pollute two pieces of paper together
9:06
construction paper the water evaporates
9:08
and the solid parts stay behind and
9:10
holding those cardboard together all
9:12
right
9:13
now the the best conditions to paint
9:17
under um are in my opinion it would be
9:20
an overcast day no wind uh
9:25
60° um and you know maybe it's going to
9:29
drop to 50 at night all right so I know
9:32
that sounds crazy to you you know but
9:34
you know of course no threat of rain
9:35
just an overcast gray day here's the
9:38
trouble if you paint on
9:41
a on a sunny breezy day that's hot the
9:46
water in the paint evaporates too
9:48
quickly all right and so that's not good
9:51
we want the paint to dry slower we don't
9:54
want it to dry too quickly um and also
9:59
if it dries too quickly it makes it very
10:02
hard for you to keep a wet Edge all
10:03
right so um you want to have a wet Edge
10:08
when you
10:09
paint because that helps you uh get a
10:12
better looking finish when it's done
10:14
simple as that so hot Breezy days are
10:18
the
10:19
worst and so so think about that if
10:21
you're going to hire somebody to paint
10:24
your home um you know maybe maybe it's
10:27
best to paint it in the spring or the
10:29
fall fall all right when when you know
10:31
you're not going to have hot weather uh
10:33
simple as that uh at least that's how I
10:35
look at it so um if you have uh once
10:38
again if you have any questions about
10:40
painting Now's the Time to ask because
10:42
we're going to wrap this thing up pretty
10:43
quickly as I said with these new live
10:46
vertical shorts shorts I don't want to
10:49
um you know I don't want to go on for a
10:51
half an hour or an hour that's not a
10:53
purpose of it I just want to hit a
10:54
specific topic stay on topic and then
10:58
answer your questions and then just move
10:59
on simple as that
11:02
um the last thing I want to say about
11:04
the paint is um beware I'll tell you a
11:07
quick little story that happened to me
11:10
uh last year um I went I went to a big
11:14
box store and um actually I I'll tell
11:18
you it was
11:19
Lowe's and I bought a paint there and
11:23
the paint said that it had a um one coat
11:27
coverage guarantee it was an interior
11:30
paint and right on the front of the
11:33
right on the front of the U paint can
11:35
you know one coat guarantee blah blah
11:37
blah so I buy it don't think anything of
11:41
it take it home I you know I know how to
11:42
paint and by the way let me just go off
11:45
on a little tangent here what what
11:47
happens with most rookie painters is
11:51
they they put the paint on too thin all
11:54
right and and that's why you don't get
11:57
good coverage with one coat once again
12:00
when you read the label on the pain can
12:02
it will tell you um how much square foot
12:07
area you're supposed to cover typically
12:09
with a gallon of paint it's somewhere
12:10
between 300 and 400 square fet so think
12:13
of uh think of an average room like a
12:16
bedroom like a bedroom that's 12 by 10
12:20
by 8T high so let's see what is that
12:23
that's um uh uh 80
12:26
80 uh you know in other words were at
12:29
240 plus 160 we're right at 400 square
12:33
ft
12:34
so with closet doors and windows one
12:37
gallon of paint should get you you
12:40
should exhaust one gallon of paint when
12:43
you paint like just a regular normal
12:44
bedroom all right if you have a lot of
12:47
paint left over you've over rolled it
12:49
you you you putting it on too
12:50
thin I go home I use this paint I
12:53
already knew it was there would be a
12:55
really good chance it wouldn't cover
12:57
because it was yellow yellows are hard
12:59
yellows rarely cover in one coat it's a
13:01
really tough color to work with I I take
13:06
the can back and and I go up to the
13:10
counter and say I need another gallon of
13:12
this um because it didn't cover in one
13:16
coat and the guy said okay so he mixes
13:19
up another gallon and then he I I go um
13:24
do you have to put a sticker on this you
13:26
know so that I don't you know get a salt
13:29
Ed when I walk out the door or have the
13:31
police called thinking I'm stealing it
13:33
she say oh wa you have to pay for it and
13:35
I go wait a minute I go look here it
13:38
says that it's one coat guarantee and it
13:40
didn't cover he goes well he goes uh and
13:43
it had on the label by the way this
13:45
paint was um a Sheron Williams paint he
13:47
said well you've got to take that
13:49
problem you got to take you got to get
13:51
your money back from Sheron Williams and
13:52
I thought what so my my qu my point is
13:57
if you're going to buy a paint from
13:59
somebody
14:01
um and and some paint store find out
14:05
what the warranty is find out what you
14:06
have to do to get your money back or to
14:09
get more free paint uh don't I mean do
14:11
that before you buy the original can is
14:14
what I'm trying to say don't don't fall
14:16
under the Trap like I did so uh anyway
14:19
um that's about all I really want to
14:21
talk about about exterior paints I hope
14:23
you enjoyed the live
14:25
broadcast um if you if you want to know
14:29
more about any topic uh you can email me
14:33
pretty simple askthebuilder gmail.com go
14:36
to my askthebuilder.com website use the
14:39
ask Tim Page um you can also uh leave
14:43
comments here on this video if you're
14:45
watching it after we went live uh and
14:47
I'll try to help you as best I can and
14:50
I'm going to try to do more of these uh
14:52
vertical live broadcasts uh in the
14:55
future we're going to try to maybe do
14:56
One A Day and I don't know what time to
14:58
do do them it just depends on what my
15:00
schedule is but uh I want to thank you
15:02
very much for watching and um it's great
15:06
to be back great to be back live I'm Tim
