how the heck with it we're going to go
0:02
live oh hi I'm Tim Carter and we're
0:05
going to do some drywall tips today at
0:07
things that will teach you how to get
0:09
Pro results now look if you're a pro
0:11
watching this video stop stop don't even
0:13
think about making any comments all
0:15
right uh we already know you guys are
0:18
great this video is primarily made for
0:21
rookies all right and homeowners that's
0:23
who I'm going after you guys you already
0:26
know what to do all right first of all
0:27
always wear white got it all right
0:29
because you're going to get the mud all
0:31
over you and if you wear dark clothes
0:33
you're going to look like a slob all
0:34
right so that's the first tip all right
0:36
wear away now here's the here's a really
0:38
good
0:39
one let's say you think you've gotten it
0:42
this far your drywall and you're
0:44
thinking wow you know it really looks
0:46
good it really looks great I'm ready to
0:49
paint well I don't think so what I would
0:51
do is get a flashlight uh this happens
0:54
to be a really bright LED one and here's
0:56
the
0:58
trick so notice this if I put this light
1:01
at a 90° angle where the light's just
1:04
hitting just like that it looks great
1:08
it's everything looks fine like wow
1:10
that's paint we're ready to go no no no
1:13
look at this now watch what happens when
1:15
I take this light and bring it down here
1:18
at a low angle so it's washing the wall
1:21
look at all these defects look at how
1:24
messed up it is it's really bad you can
1:28
see a line up here
1:30
so you wash the wall with the last like
1:34
just at a low angle and it's going to
1:36
show you all of the defects simple as
1:38
that now let me show you how to fix them
1:40
all
1:41
right what I like to
1:44
do you're going to have to mix your mud
1:46
up a you're going to have to get the mud
1:48
creamy like it's you know like it's uh
1:51
warm cake icing this is a brand new
1:54
bucket of plus three I added about 4 oz
1:58
of water maybe three Oz and I mixed the
2:01
upper inch and a half and it's nice and
2:04
creamy look at this you know it just
2:06
kind of comes off like that very
2:08
creamy all right put it in your
2:12
pan you may use a hawk most homeowners
2:14
want to use a pan I like to use a 10-in
2:17
knife this is a stainless steel one I've
2:19
had it for 35 years works pretty good
2:22
and so all I'm going to do I know where
2:24
those defects are that one defect was
2:27
right there all right the first thing to
2:30
do with your knife is to very
2:34
gently kind of scrape the wall cuz what
2:36
you want to do is you're trying to get
2:38
off any tiny little nibs little dried
2:41
particles of drywall because if those
2:44
get in the mud they're going to make
2:46
lines and you're you're going to have to
2:47
fix those so watch
2:49
this I just take a little bit of mud
2:51
here I happen to know that that one
2:53
defect is right there and I'll put it
2:57
on and I'm just applying a really good
3:01
pressure and you can see I I know you
3:03
probably can't see it but I filled that
3:05
defect
3:06
in filled that defect in really well
3:10
here was that if you remember there was
3:12
a line right here there was a big line
3:15
so you can fix it same
3:21
thing I'm just running the knife
3:25
over and I've just made that line
3:27
disappear that line is now gone all
3:30
right so it's simple things like that
3:31
that's all you got to do here's what
3:33
we're going to do and I'm going to do a
3:34
separate live of this I'm going tomorrow
3:38
we're going to start to skim coat these
3:40
walls with a 24 in skimming blade it's
3:44
kind of newer technology was not really
3:47
around 30 years ago to speak of it
3:49
really makes the walls look great and
3:51
here's why let me show you one other
3:54
thing this is why you need to skim coat
3:57
the walls so once again watch this
4:00
the wall looks pretty good right here
4:02
you're going to think well gosh Tim it
4:04
looks you know smooth here the drywall
4:06
paper looks smooth but watch this come
4:08
over here and look at this once again
4:11
I've got the light at a 90° angle watch
4:14
what happens when I make it go wash the
4:18
wall look at the texture difference
4:20
right here look at how smooth the joint
4:23
compound is but look how rough the
4:26
actual paper is on the drywall it's very
4:29
rough it doesn't seem that way but it is
4:32
and if you paint that that rough texture
4:34
is going to come through your paint
4:36
unless you use a really really good
4:38
primer that's meant for dry roll but a
4:40
lot of people don't do it a lot of
4:41
people buy the paint that says it's got
4:43
the primer in it I don't think it does
4:45
that good of a job all right so once
4:48
again when you look at it this way looks
4:50
great but you've got to take the light
4:53
and go like this so when we skim coat
4:55
the wall when it's finished the skim
4:58
coating is going to look just like this
5:00
and you can see how this has filled in
5:04
you can see the light and dark areas and
5:07
that's where the joint compound filled
5:09
in the minor imperfections in the
5:11
drywall paper pretty interesting huh
5:15
okay if you have any
5:18
questions and you want to know more just
5:21
put them in the comments below the video
5:22
I'll try to do my best to answer them um
5:25
we're going to do a few more videos
5:27
about finishing drywall but remember if
5:30
you're a pro we don't want to hear it
5:32
you know I mean just go away I mean I'm
5:35
not trying to be nasty just go record
5:37
your own video and you show people how
5:40
you do it instead of typing it in the
5:42
comments simple as that all right thanks
5:44
for watching I'm Tim Carter
