Hi, how you doing? I am Tim Carter and you are watching Ask the Builder
0:08
And this is live. So nothing quite like live TV. And today I am going to talk a little bit about
0:16
just in the first part of the live stream about workbench design and a few construction tips
0:26
You might be surprised that it's really, really easy to make a few
0:29
mistakes when building a workbench. It might seem really straightforward, and I'm about to share
0:36
with you them a common mistake that people make. But before we go any farther, I want to thank today's
0:42
sponsor, Stainsolver. Stain solver is a certified organic oxygen bleach. It's a powder that you mix
0:50
with water, and if you can clean something with water, if it can get wet, then you can clean it
0:56
with stain solvers. So it's really good. For example, at cleaning flortile grout, dirty laundry
1:02
stains. I mean, really tough stains in laundry. I had a person not too long ago asked if it would get
1:07
rid of diesel fuel odor and out of clothes because they had wash some clothes that were stained with diesel fuel but they still smelled like diesel fuel Yeah it gets it right out It an incredible deodorizer
1:20
for pet stains, whatever. So stain solver, just go to the stain solver website
1:26
stain solver.com and watch the videos, just hunt around, use the search engine. You'll be convinced
1:33
that it's a really great product. My wife and I've been selling it and making it for almost 25 years
1:38
So we're believers in it. We use it all the time here at home
1:42
Okay. If you have any questions today, it's also, it's Ask Anything Monday
1:48
Here we are just a few days away from Thanksgiving here in the United States. Really big holiday
1:54
It's a very light work week for many people, not all people, but many people, they work today and tomorrow
2:01
then they take the rest of the week off. They get like a five-day weekend. So I'm going to pretty much do the same thing
2:08
So we're only going to do, I'm only going to do a live stream today and tomorrow
2:12
and then I'll be back next Monday. So, and then we're ramping up to Christmas
2:17
My goodness. So it's right around the corner. So anyway, let's talk a little bit about work benches
2:23
But if you have a question about your own home you need me to help you I happy to do it Just type your question in the chat box and you be first in line to get your answer So go ahead and do that while I talk a little bit
2:38
about workbenchers. And if you have questions about workbenchers as I talk to you and I describe them
2:43
then feel free to ask those questions as well. I've built a lot of workbenchers, as you might
2:49
imagine in my career. I've built them for myself. I've built them for my customers. I actually
2:54
inherited. I use it now. I really cherish it. I inherited a really beautiful workbench from a neighbor of
3:03
mine. This is going back 40 years ago. His name was Ralph Cotley. And Ralph was a wonderful man
3:12
He lived on Robeson Road in Pleasant Ridge right next to me. And he had this, he was getting ready
3:20
to move. His wife passed away. and he was moving out of this big, big house, way too big for him
3:28
It was actually way too big for him and his wife. And anyway, he had this wonderful workbench in the garage
3:34
And he said I want to give it to you because I know that you cherish it and you take care of it And he was right This thing was so well made And it the same thing I would only pass this workbench when I don need it anymore It going to go to a family member
3:53
It's going to go to somebody who will really cherish it and continue to preserve it and act as its
3:59
steward. So some workbenchers are built that well. And you can build one like that. So let's talk about
4:04
it. The first thing, if you're going to have a workbench on a wall
4:10
the biggest mistake you can make. And I see people, I made this mistake early in my career
4:15
And here's how come the mistake happens. So I made the workbench like 26 inches deep and thinking
4:26
well, that's what a kitchen countertop measures, you know, 25 and a half inches. And I thought
4:31
with that, I mean, if it works for kitchen countertops, surely it would work for a workbench. Well
4:35
the trouble is, is that typically on a workbench on the wall, you've got pegboard
4:43
and it's a little too far to reach for the average person to get comfortably to get to the things
4:51
that are on the pegboard. You generally don't have trouble with getting things out of wall cabinets
4:56
on a kitchen wall because you're..
