You know, just about everybody in the Tri-State's got indoor plumbing
0:08
Maybe except for Ron Wilson, our garden expert. But have you ever wondered what that little stubby pipe that sticks up out of your roof is connected to
0:16
Well, I'm going to show you right now. I'm up in the attic and that's stubby little pipe that sticks out of the roof
0:21
Well, it's connected to the plumbing vent system. It's a very important part of the average plumbing system
0:27
Here I am in a new house, and this is a drain. This is a drain, a future drain for a bathroom sink
0:32
Here's the line that the water comes through and it will go down eventually the sewer
0:36
But check out this pipe right here. What is it? Well, it's the vent pipe. This is the pipe that connects back up to the roof
0:43
Here's why vent pipes are important. Before you flush a toilet or let water go out of a sink
0:49
inside the sewer and drain line is nothing but air. As soon as you pull the drain or flush the toilet
0:55
an enormous amount of water pushes down through the pipe and pushes the air out of the way
1:00
Well, that air needs to be replaced, and it does it through the vent lines
1:04
As the water travels down towards the sewer or your septic tank, air enters through the roof
1:09
and comes down into the lines to replace the air that was pushed out of the way
1:14
Have you ever noticed when you flush a toilet, possibly you hear a gurgling in your bathroom sink
1:18
or maybe your bathtub? It's a sign that a vent lines clog. How do you fix it
1:22
Get up on the roof, put a garden hose down the stubby pipe, and turn it on
1:25
Make sure someone's inside to check for leaks. and hopefully the water will flush out the vent system
