Exterior door installation, that's what I'm talking about
0:11
Moments ago we took out an exterior door right here and I'm going to get ready to put in a new one
0:16
Now you're probably wondering, installing an exterior door, is that a job that I can do, Tim
0:21
Well, the answer is maybe and maybe not, but if you follow some of the steps that I'm going to show you in the next few minutes
0:27
I think you might be shocked to see how easy it really is. Let's get started right now
0:31
The first thing you need to do is you need to make sure that the door is going to be at the right height with respect to the finish flooring
0:38
All too often, carpenters who don't know what they're doing will actually install the door on the sub floor of the house
0:45
And when the finish floor gets installed, all of a sudden there's not enough room for an area or a throw rug, and it becomes a nightmare
0:53
Now, what I've already done, and I did this before I installed the original door, is right here
0:58
right here I put down this piece of plywood that's three quarters of an inch
1:03
thick it's actually sitting on top of the sub floor okay here's the sub floor
1:08
of the house right here this piece of plywood and I added this actual three quarter inch piece of plywood on top of that to get this door up in the air so that an area or throw rag will fit The first step in the process to actually
1:23
put a flashing underneath the door that's important so that water does not contact
1:29
this strip of plywood, the sub floor underneath it, and even the floor
1:32
choice. We want to keep water outdoors. There's different flashing systems but I'm going to use a waterproof
1:38
membrane that's very sticky that's a lot like giant pieces of masking tape. We're going to put
1:44
on a couple of strips and you'll see how it works to actually keep the water outside in case
1:49
some of the water rolls underneath the doorway. So, I'm going to be.
2:24
Okay I getting ready to put the last piece of flashing in and it really important that it put in the right place
2:45
Or other words, all the work is for nothing. Here's what you do not want to do
2:50
You don't put the flashing in so it's flush with the front edge of that plywood
2:54
What's supposed to happen is that the flashing is supposed to overlap the exterior siding
3:01
or the brick or whatever material you have outside so that if water actually comes underneath
3:08
the door, it'll flow over the flashing and then flow over the siding and outside and it will
3:13
never get to the wood that's part of your home. Okay, the flashing's installed. I'm really happy with it. I made the corners nice and watertight
3:23
and now it's time to actually actually, check the rough opening for level and then see where we might have to adjust the door
3:30
when we put it into position. Okay, the sill is nice and level. It's really within
3:35
tolerance and now all I want to do is basically just kind of set the door up in here and see what it looks like It should fit perfectly Let go ahead and do that right now Check it out We got the door in place Here all we did It pretty heavy So I had a helper
3:54
Actually, two of them. Somebody stood inside so that we could lift the door up. We had to tilt it back in place to get past this piece of green trim up here
4:03
And then we brought it into position. Now to secure it temporarily, I went ahead and
4:10
put two sets of shims up in either corner and that makes the door kind of nice and tight
4:15
And what I wanted to do was from the inside to look to see how the reveal around the door looks
4:22
And it's perfect. The reveal is nice and even and the door opens and closes easily
4:27
So the next step is simply to nail it into position using the shims
4:32
And as we put them in, we constantly check to make sure that the reveal is correct and that the door is opening and
4:39
closing perfectly. It's really pretty much that easy. Oh, look what I found. The written installation instructions
4:48
Very important. And what you really need to pay attention to in the instructions is
4:53
where you're supposed to place the nails and how frequently you're supposed to place the shims
