Hi, I'm Tim Carter from AskTheBuilder.com and today we're going to talk about chimney
0:08
leaks right where they come up through a roof. And this is a very common place because right
0:14
here at the corner, the flashings have to be soldered. Oh man, my daggone phone. We're
0:21
going to have to do this over. Hello, Tim Carter. Yes, this is Tim. How are you? Yeah
0:29
That is Tim, who's calling? From AskTheBuilder.com. It is Tim from AskTheBuilder.com
0:33
This is Paul from the 77G7 channel. How are ya? Hey Paul, what's the word man
0:40
Not too much. Am I disturbing anything? Are you busy? Well, actually you are
0:46
I was just taping a video man about roof leaks where the chimney comes up through a roof
0:51
So tell me, what's going on? What's happening? Well, what's happening is I keep having this leak in the toilet bowl over here
1:01
And once in a while it does work, and other times I got to wiggle the handle, you know
1:09
Okay. You think you could help me? Yeah, well, so I got a question
1:12
So I'm a licensed plumber, so I've fixed a lot of problems like this
1:17
So tell me, over the past few months, like if you would flush the toilet and you leave the bathroom
1:23
would the water just fill up in the tank and the toilet would shut off and there's no problem, right
1:28
Right. Okay, but now all of a sudden, when you flush the toilet
1:33
the water, does it just kind of keep running and running and running and you have to come back in
1:38
That's exactly right. Okay. That's exactly right, yes. All right, so are you in the bathroom right now
1:44
I'm in the bathroom right now and I knew you were the guy to call
1:49
so hopefully you can help me with this. It's just very annoying, you know
1:54
Okay, you're going to love this. It's really an easy thing to fix
1:58
Is it going to be expensive, by the way? It's not going to be expensive
2:02
I'll bet you that you can fix this problem for less than $10
2:07
Is that right? Yes. Okay. All right, but here's the first thing I want you to do
2:11
Yes. I need you to take the lid off the toilet tank
2:16
Okay, you want to do that right now? Yeah I want you to do that right now Okay let me see if I can do this here I don know how to fix anything so bear with me Alright
2:30
Okay, I got it off. Okay, now let me tell you a quick tip about these toilet tank lids
2:35
I do not want you to lean that against the wall. You have to lie it flat on the floor because what will happen is a lot of people lean those
2:44
things against the wall, they bump it by mistake and it slides, hits the floor and cracks in
2:48
half. It's on the floor. Great, okay. Okay, now look down into that toilet tank because I'm sure it's
2:54
filled with water right now. Yes, it is. Okay, on probably the left side, you'll actually see where
3:01
the handle connects to this like brass rod that's got like a chain on it probably. Do you see that
3:07
I see that. Okay, in the center of the toilet tank, you'll probably see this metal tube that comes up
3:15
above the water. Yes. Okay. Now, in the left corner of the toilet tank, you probably see this
3:24
really strange assembly. It could be like a cylinder, or it could be this really weird piece
3:32
of metal that has an arm that goes over to like a big ball that's floating in the water. Which one
3:37
do you have, do you know? This looks like a cylinder more than a ball. Okay, great. That's
3:45
fantastic because that's going to make this even easier. Great. Now, I want you to put your hand
3:51
down in the water and right to where you see the end of that chain, you know, from the flushing
3:57
arm is. Okay, you want me to put my hand in this water? Yeah, what's wrong with that, man? It's just
4:04
water. Well, isn't it dirty? No, no, no, man. This is toilet water. Oh, I know what you're thinking
4:10
You're thinking the water down in the bowl. No, the water in the tank. Yeah, I know. Listen
4:16
the water in the tank. Yeah, the water in the tank is the same exact water that you drink each
4:23
day. It's the same water that comes out of the faucets, so it's totally safe. It's totally clean
4:29
I mean sometimes the inside of the toilet tank looks a little grungy, but that water is totally safe to drink
4:35
In fact, get this man, a lot of people don't know this Paul, let's say one morning you wake up to go to work
4:40
and you go to take a shower and the water not on You know it like what going on Like maybe there a water main break As long as you have not flushed the toilet first
4:53
there's always enough water in that toilet tank for you to be able to brush your teeth
4:58
wash your face, and wash your hair. So it's like an emergency batch of water
5:01
So that's kind of a neat thing to know. That is awesome. Okay, so what I want you to do is stick your hand down
5:08
into the water right now, and at the end of that chain, it's attached to like this little valve that'll lift up
5:14
And I actually want you to pull up on that chain and watch what happens. Okay. Well, let's look at this brush
5:23
Exactly. Okay, what you just did is you activated that, what we call the flapper valve
5:30
Okay, and what you do, if you let go of the chain right now, that flapper valve should fall back down on its own
5:36
But the problem you're having is it's getting hung up on something or the valve is worn out
5:40
So it's that simple, huh? It's that simple. And what you're going to do is, you're going to go today to a home center or maybe a hardware
5:49
store, and you're going to buy a new flapper valve, but you've got to get the right one
5:55
I don't usually like to mention brands, but the one that I like is a brand called Fluid Master
6:01
Fluid Master, okay. Yeah, it's called Fluid Master. It's got green and red packaging
6:07
Now when you go to buy this, you have to get the right one. There's one that comes with both the flapper valve, a new valve seat
6:17
It's actually like an assembly. And then if you turn the packaging over, it's got this ring of putty that comes with it
6:24
that allows you to actually seal the new flapper valve to the inside of your toilet
6:31
And these new flapper valves, they come with what they call a timing cup that actually fills
6:39
with water and it keeps the flapper valve open long enough to get a really good flush
6:45
And all you need to do to install it is this. Can you look under your toilet right now
6:51
Tell me if there's a shutoff valve where the water is coming up into the toilet
6:55
Okay, let me bend over here and see. Yeah, there's a shutter valve there
7:00
Okay, well when you get ready to install this flapper valve, you need to turn that water
7:05
off, so turn that valve clockwise. Don do it right now just turn that valve clockwise and then flush the toilet one last time and then if you got the valve shut off the water won be coming into the toilet I want you to take like an old sponge and I want you to sponge out some of that whatever water
7:22
is left in the bottom of the toilet tank. And then from there, just follow the directions
7:27
that come with that flapper valve kit. They've got really great instructions on how to install it
7:33
And that will fix it, huh? That's it man, if you read the instructions, put it in the way they say, you're not going
7:41
to have this problem anymore. Well, that was pretty simple. I thought it was going to be a lot more complicated than that
7:47
No, and a lot of people, they want to call a plumber and plumbers can be really expensive sometimes
7:52
So, this is really an easy do-it-yourself repair. Yeah, that's just something I never knew
7:57
Yep, no problem man. Is there anything else I can help you with
8:01
I think that's the only problems that I'm having. If I ever have any more around here, is it okay for me to give you a call
8:07
Yeah, yeah, you can call me. I'm glad to help, and I'm glad to help a fellow YouTuber
8:13
I just think that the people who are really trying to do a good job on YouTube
8:18
they should help one another. That's what I think. Well, I think so too, and thanks a lot for your help
8:24
And I just want to say that my whole family watches your channel
8:30
Well, they must have a really boring life. Because there's lots of other better stuff to watch, baby
8:38
Hey, thanks again, Tim. Hey, Paul, man, no worries, man. Let me know
8:43
