hi I'm Tim Carter from asthe builder.com
0:06
and I want to show you how to get water
0:08
small water droplets out of a tub or
0:10
shower faucet that has a modern
0:13
cartridge so that when you winterize a
0:15
home you don't come back in the
0:17
springtime and find out that the faucet
0:20
cartridge has been blown up by water
0:24
that expanded inside that valve let's
0:26
take a look at this here's a neat little
0:28
Gizmo that I made out of some clear
0:30
plastic tubing and some parts from a
0:31
hardware store the business end is just
0:35
right here this is a simple shraer valve
0:38
you know you'll see this on your car
0:40
tires or a bicycle tire and this allows
0:43
you to get air you know into your tires
0:46
well in this case it just allows you to
0:48
get air inside this plastic
0:50
tubing and the other end of the plastic
0:52
tubing is just a half inch female
0:56
coupling and this attaches to the little
0:59
goose neck
1:00
that comes out of the wall where your
1:02
shower head is I'll explain how this all
1:05
works right
1:06
now the first thing you have to do is go
1:08
turn off the water in your house and
1:11
hopefully down by the water shut off
1:12
valve the plumber installed a boiler
1:15
drain on the house side of the valve if
1:18
not you have to find the lowest fixture
1:20
in the house once the water's off open
1:23
up the valves both hot and cold water on
1:26
that fixture or open up the bo boiler
1:28
drain now you have to go around the
1:30
entire house and open up every single
1:33
valve both hot and cold water you have
1:35
to flush every toilet you have to go
1:37
outside and open up every single hose
1:39
bib you basically have to open up all of
1:42
the the fixtures and what happens is
1:44
Water by gravity should start flowing
1:46
down those pipes and exiting that lowest
1:48
fixture or through the boiler drain if
1:50
you do have a boiler drain make sure you
1:52
attach a garden hose to it and and it
1:54
direct that water to a floor
1:56
drain once the water's out of the system
1:59
there's still going to be some small
2:00
amounts of water possibly in the faucet
2:03
cartridges in your tubs and showers go
2:06
upstairs or go to those rooms take off
2:08
the shower head and make sure that if
2:11
it's a tub shower combo you have the
2:14
diverter in the up position so that you
2:17
know so that the uh air you know is is
2:21
so that you can blow out the water
2:23
through the valve that's very very
2:25
important if you just have a shower only
2:27
it's going to be very simple but
2:29
understand that
2:30
there's a little diverter that that
2:32
causes the water to either go out of the
2:33
tub spigot or out of the shower head so
2:36
you have to make sure that you're
2:38
blocking the tub spigot so that the um
2:41
you know so that we can get air down
2:44
through the uh shower head arm you know
2:47
that shower arm that comes out of the
2:48
wall and through and into the piping
2:50
system really important that should make
2:52
perfect
2:53
sense you go ahead and you take off the
2:56
shower head attach the halfin female
2:58
coupling you know to the that shower arm
3:00
that's sticking out of the wall you
3:01
don't have to use any pipe sealant you
3:03
don't have to use any Teflon tape just
3:05
hand tighten it attach the other end the
3:07
shraer valve to your bicycle pump turn
3:10
the shower valve to the hot position and
3:13
pump the pump a couple of times turn the
3:16
shower valve to the cold position you
3:18
know pump the bicycle pump a couple of
3:20
times maybe three or four and then
3:22
adjust the valve to the center uh you
3:24
know to uh like the warm position and
3:26
pump the pump three or four times again
3:29
after doing all that you should have
3:31
blown you know air and you should have
3:33
have gotten any of those water droplets
3:35
out of that faucet cartridge and it's
3:38
really that simple you know just uh you
3:40
know just make sure that you've got air
3:42
you know if you if you meet resistance
3:44
if you have a tub shower combo and
3:46
you're pumping and and you just and the
3:49
pumps really really hard uh that tells
3:51
you that you haven't got the divert
3:53
you've got the diverter in the wrong
3:54
position and you're not getting any air
3:56
going through the faucet uh you you'll
3:58
be able to tell believe me it's really
4:00
really simple this should prevents you
4:02
from having any Frozen cartridges so
4:04
that in the springtime when you come
4:05
back you're going to be able to take a
4:06
shower and not have to replace your
4:08
faucet cartridge I'm Tim Carter for sthe
