Hi, I'm Tim Carter from Ask the Builder.com

I'm here at a job site residential construction in New Hampshire. It's cold
0:12
It's wintertime. And that's what I want to talk about, about insulating. I want you to look up here, and this is a header above a window
0:20
And see this nice blue foam insulation? Well, that's because typically in the old days, we have to put structural wood on top
0:29
wood on top over the window to carry the load. Because you don't want weight pushing down on a window or door
0:35
So what would happen is if we just put solid wood up there, that's a conductor
0:40
It doesn't insulate too well. Wood is an insulator, but it's not like fiberglass or foam
0:45
So this is how this header is built. It's actually got two two by sixes, one, two, and then a piece of foam on the inside to keep that header nice and warm
0:58
This is probably an R of about 10. It's a closed cell rigid foam insulation

Really, really a good product. So if you're building, make sure that you've got a nice insulated header above your doors

and windows. I'm Tim Carter for AsktheBuilder.com. If you want to discover more home improvement tips, go to askthebuilder.com
