You know, shoveling should know can be hard work
0:13
And I'll tell you why, because sometimes it can be really, really heavy, a wet snow
0:17
And you have to really be careful about that. There are some products, though, out there that can make the job a little easier
0:22
And what I'm talking about are de-icing salts. A lot of you think that de-icing salts can harm concrete
0:28
Well, that's not really true. The icing salts can hurt concrete that hasn't been put down properly
0:34
Now, what you want to know is that there are three types of rock salt or deicing salts
0:38
We've got regular rock salt, which is sodium chloride. We have those really neat round pellets that are like BBs called calcium chloride
0:45
And the exciting thing is that there's a new one called magnesium chloride
0:49
That particular deicing salt is called mag. And one of the things that I like about the magnesium chloride is that it works best at low
0:56
temperatures that's got a much wider spectrum and working range than the other two salts
1:01
and it's less corrosive to any type of metal work that you might have around. Let's say
1:05
rod iron railings or aluminum porch railings or walkways, it is much, much less harmful to this
1:11
product. And it's also easier on the trees and vegetation. And Ron Wilson's going to love that
1:16
Now, where do you find these type of salts? You can find some of them at regular hardware stores
1:21
and home centers, but if you want the magnesium chloride product, you've got to go to the specialty
1:25
salt stores, look in the yellow pages for under salt and you'll find the different companies
1:30
that sell magnesium chloride or mag. Now remember, if you want help on shoveling snow, why not
1:36
work a little earlier and faster? What I mean by that? Just go ahead and put the salts
1:41
down before the snowfall. I think you're going to find it's going to be a lot easier to take
1:45
care of that heavy snow. If you want to discover more home improvement tips, go to ask
