Hi, I'm Tim Carter from Ask the Builder.com
0:06
I'm at the top of my driveway at the cul-de-sac where I live here in New Hampshire, and I know
0:13
it's really bright. I'm sorry about the Raccoon eyes. We had a really, really big windstorm yesterday
0:18
Today is March 27, 2014. Think about that. March 27th, 2014. Wait till you see how much snow we have still here
0:29
I'm taping this video because this is your baseline for the Snow Be Gone contest
0:34
That's what I'm going to call it, the Snow Be Gone. You need to vote to see when all of the snow and ice is going to be gone here
0:43
and the winner is going to get a nice nine-pound container of stain solver
0:48
Now, if there's more than one person who guesses the right day when all the snow and ice is gone
0:54
then we're going to randomly pick the winner from that group of people. That's how it's going to work
0:58
Really, really simple. Let's take a look at what's going on up here. You're not going to believe it
1:03
All right, so there's my driveway right there, and you can see the lake off to the distance
1:08
It still completely covered with ice probably 20 inches thick still I mean we had very few days above 32 degrees And I going to give you this is also really important
1:22
So I'm facing due south right now. So that's south. And of course the sun is rising right now right about here every morning
1:33
So that's almost due east. And it's really important for you to know that
1:37
Those snow piles you're looking at right there, that snow is easily five feet high
1:43
And, you know, here's some piled up. That's about eight feet tall right there, that highest point
1:48
And, of course, as you look back up my street, now we're looking pretty much right here
1:54
That direction is due north. And you can just see there's snow everywhere
2:00
Now, as we come around the cul-de-sac here, this is solid bedrock, solid granite
2:06
and you can see the giant ice flows that are coming out of the granite
2:10
That ice there is probably three to four feet thick. It's just groundwater that flows out of the rock
2:17
and it just keeps making layer after layer. And we have a lot more of it right here in the shadows
2:25
Now this is really important right here where you looking at This is where the last of the snow and ice is going to be Because you know I can go up to show you where the sun is pretty bright you know up there
2:36
And, of course, the sun sets, you know, over here. This is west, right up behind this hill
2:43
So this area right here is in the shade, you know, after about 1 or 2 o'clock
2:50
So now I set up my transit grade pole right here. All right, so you can see this is, I'll come up to it
2:58
This is what I used for years to set the depths of foundations. And I've got it standing up here
3:05
Suffice it to say that the pile of snow right behind there
3:09
right there is about nine and a half feet high. And it's a huge amount of snow
3:15
I mean, this is many, many cubic yards of snow here. The distance from right here from where the pavement is, I'm standing on the street right here
3:24
all the way back to that bedrock is probably a good 20 feet
3:28
So there's a lot of snow here. So now, now you know what we've got here
3:36
And let me tell you what we're going to do. Okay so you see all the snow So now your job is to pick what day of 2014 is all of this snow and ice going to be gone
3:50
And what I'm going to do is all, as it starts to get less and less, I'm going to, you know, of course I'm going to come up here and take a photograph for you or shoot other quick video videos to show you, you know, where we're at, you know, what's going on
4:06
So you'll be able to see it happen in, you know, pretty much real time
4:11
So that's your job. You've got to try to look at the forecast and, of course, realize that if it rains, you know, the rain I'll get rid of it pretty quickly
4:19
So you need to kind of think how much rain we're going to have this spring. And more importantly, you know, what, just keep in mind the direction and the fact that, you know, this big pile here is in the shade, you know, after about noon
4:33
You know, noon 1 o'clock. and who knows how long it's going to be
4:38
All right, well, good luck. I think this will be a fun contest. I wish you the best of luck
4:43
And we will close entries to this. I'll tell you what we're going to do
4:47
We're going to close entries on, I'm just going to say, April 15th
4:52
I'm not even going to start the days of when you can even pick until April 15th
4:58
because I know it's going to be sometime after
