Drywall - Plaster

Drywall Repair

Repairing holes in drywall is easy with these tips. You don't need special drywall repair kits for the drywall repair. With just a few drywall tools and some drywall taping, those holes will be gone.

Paperless Drywall

Paperless drywall is an interesting product. Unlike regular drywall, there is no paper surface. The drywall is covered in fiberglass. The fiberglass surface is highly water resistant. Paperless drywall helps reduce the spread of mold. It is mold resistant, not mold proof. Other than a slightly different surface feel, you work with it just like regular drywall.

Drywall Tools

Drywall tools come in all different types and levels of quality. If you are just going to hang and finish a few sheets, you can get by with basic tools. But if you intend to be working with lots of drywall, it may pay to invest in an assortment of joint knives, t-square, stilts, a drywall taping banjo and any number of other specialty drywall tools.

Patching Plaster Walls

Patching plaster walls is not too difficult depending upon the size of the holes being patched. The materials used to patch plaster are special. Drywall joint compound is not an acceptable patching material.

How To Install Drywall

How to install drywall the right way is a common question. Some people think there should be a gap between pieces when they install drywall.

Installing Drywall in a Garage

Drywall installation can be done correctly and still you get cracks. Joint compound can hold too much water and crack upon drying. Or it could be cracking from movement of the walls.

Installing Drywall In Wet Locations

Drywall is the product of choice to finish interior walls. But there are different drywall types and it pays to install the right drywall in the right location. Special drywall that is moisture-resistant is made for wet locations. Regular drywall can fall apart if it is allowed to get wet on a regular basis.

Drywall Over Paneling

Putting drywall over thin wood paneling may cause the new wall to jut beyond door and window jambs. Consider alternatives such as painting wood paneling or filling in the seams with spackle. If you still want drywall, adjustments to the jambs should be made after the drywall is installed.

Hanging Drywall Direction on Steel Studs

An AsktheBuilder.com reader asked me about which direction she should be hanging drywall sheets on steel studs. Drywall hanging on steel studs should be done horizontally.

High Quality Drywall

Drywall is undoubtedly the standard wall covering material used in new homes today. Drywall is relatively inexpensive, it performs well in most applications, it is easy to install and it looks great when finished and painted properly. But there are still so many options for covering your walls, including plaster.

Drywall Finishing Requires Skill

While finishing drywall looks easy, it requires years of acquired skill to really get good. DIY'ers can buy the tools for less than $75. Two common mistakes made are working with lumpy joint compound and being a perfectionist on applying the second coat.

Drywall Problems - Blisters and Falling Tape

Drywall tape blisters usually happen because there is a lack of joint compound between the tape and the drywall surface. There should be 1/16th of an inch. You'll need hand-eye coordination, joint compound mixed to the right consistency, and the right tools to prevent drywall tape blisters.

Drywall Finishing Techniques

Drywall finishing is not as simple as it is shown on TV. These drywall finishing techniques can help you get a professional finish. Working with joint compound and drywall taping requires hand-eye coordination and practice.

Ten Secret Drywall Finishing Tips

Finishing drywall is an acquired skill, like driving a car. From mixing the joint compound correctly to drywall taping and applying the second coat, here are my top finishing drywall tips to help you get professional results.

Setting Joint Compounds Avoid Dust

Setting type joint compounds can be used for plaster repair. No sanding is involved if the joint compound is used correctly. Here are some makers of joint compounds that all make a quality product.

Repairing Plaster Walls

Repairing plaster walls is done with setting type joint compound. Restoring plaster walls is easy and fast with these compounds. Plaster wall crack repair can be done easily in a day with this plaster patching powdered joint compound.

Plaster Wall Restoration

Plaster cracks on walls are usually the stress release points of the wall. To prevent old plaster from cracking, maintain a constant humidity in your house. To repair cracks in plaster, apply tape or large sheets of thin fiberglass mesh and spread the joint compound over this.

Drywall Finish Problems

Joint banding or telegraphing in drywall is caused by the drywall paper and the joint compound having different textures. They both absorb liquids differently. Seeing shadows on the drywall is a result of this. To repair your drywall, create a uniform textured surface that absorbs liquids evenly.

Drywall Primers vs. Drywall Sealers

Drywall primers and drywall sealers are very different. The two drywall finishing liquids contain different amounts of resins and fillers. Avoid imperfections in drywall by selecting the correct primer or sealer.

Drywall Decorating Tips

Decorating finished drywall should always start with an appropriate drywall primer or drywall sealer. These paints will serve as an excellent backdrop to any paint or wallpaper you put on your drywall. Here are some decorating tips for walls.

Specialized Drywall Primer & Drywall Sealer Products

Drywall and joint compounds used for finishing drywall are naturally rough. To achieve a smooth, finished surface, the correct drywall primer or drywall sealer must be used as a drywall filler. There are several manufacturers who make these specialized paints.

Plaster Repair - Cracks & Holes

Patching plaster cracks is one of the most frequently asked questions I get. Here is how you can repair plaster cracks and plaster holes. Homeowners who try plaster repair without these tips are constantly bothered by cracks which reappear after they have been repaired.

Do It Yourself Plastering Techniques for Patching

Plastering is an art. Plaster techniques require tremendous hand-eye coordination. Just as with any construction trade, do it yourself plastering also requires experience.

Veneer Plaster Manufacturers & Information

Here are some manufacturers of gypsum veneer plaster and plaster veneer products. For more information about plaster, contact the USG Corporation.

Veneer Plaster

Veneer plaster saves dust and money. Regular plastering techniques changed when plaster veneer came on the market. Veneer plaster is an affordable alternative to conventional plaster for finishing drywall.

Plaster vs. Drywall

To avoid the dust of drywall, use plaster instead. Plaster, like concrete, begins as a mixture of dry compounds. Plaster veneer systems are placed over blue board, similar to drywall gypsum. However, plaster is faster to install by about two or three days and very affordable.

Drywall Finishing Tips

Drywall finishing requires hand-eye coordination. For professional results, practice drywall taping skills, mixing the compound correctly and use the right paint primer.

USG Corporation Drywall Book

The USG Corporation has an excellent book on drywall and drywall finishing. It is considered the Bible of the drywall industry. It is available for FREE download in PDF format on their Web site.

Drywall Installation

Drywall or gypsum board is a wonderful building material. Drywall installation can transform a house from the framing stage to the painting stage in a matter of days. Here are some drywall tips on how to drywall your house.

Drywall Nail Pops

Nail pops in drywall are caused by rough framing lumber shrinkage. Lumber shrinkage cannot be prevented - it is natural. However, you can reduce nail pops by installing the screws and drywall correctly.

Plaster Ceiling vs. Gravity

Old plaster ceilings sometimes fall without warning. Nailed to the ceiling joists are wooden lath boards that plaster is spread over. Temperature changes cause moisture changes in the boards and the plaster, eventually leading to plaster cracks and the whole ceiling caving in.
