Clean Refrigerator Condenser Coil - Save Big Money on Repairs

Clean your refrigerator condenser coil every few months. This coil looks like the radiator in your car and can get clogged with dust.

Why Should I Clean the Coil?

The refrigerator has to work harder if the coil is clogged with dirt and hair. A dirty coil can cause the compressor to overheat.

The refrigerator condenser coil is behind this cover plate on the bottom front of the refrigerator. Remove four screws and bingo, you're ready to vacuum.

How Should I Clean the Coil?

It's best to use a vacuum cleaner to pull the dirt back at you instead of through the coil. Do NOT blow the dirt through the coil.

You are fortunate to have such easy access to the coil. Most I have see are tucked under the unit at floor level & a devil to vac out because of obstructions.
I vac what I can & ( against your deterrence ) I blow the rest with a long tube fitted to my blow nozzle
( when the wife is away ). I also access the fan & clean the blades. Finally , I cut some screening to fit the air entry below the door to act as a pre-filter & snapped the trim piece over it. I am able to catch the dust here & have never had to wrestle with the coil again .

If you look at the picture of the coils you'll notice that the top coil on the left hand side is bent. Use a small flat bladed screwdriver to straighten the fins . It will only take a moment but while you are at it check 'em all . An crevice tool for a vacuum cleaner will help you get into those hard to reach areas and if its not long enough put in on wand section. This works great especially of your kitchen is carpeted. See Ya!

Like Jim Maxey my coil is also tucked under the frig next to the floor in an oscillating configuration that goes 2/3 of the way to the back.Cleaned it just last week after hearing the fan struggling. A real mess, it had been a while with most of the dust/pet hair in the front section, but still plenty of crap in the interior coils. I used a couple of straws taped together, a smaller straw inside a larger flex straw and taped into the vacuum crevice wand to reach the rear coils.
