Should tile direction (either straight or diagonal) be the same throughout
the house?

Lisa,
I can't see your house from where I live....... This issue is one of
personal preference.....

If I have tiles that are the equivalent of a 1-1.5 ratio, what patterns can
I use?
AsktheBuilder

Eric,
You can use whatever you like. Do a dry layout and see what looks best.

Hello,
Wondering if you have a tile pattern to follow using 13 x 13 & 20 x 20
tiles together.
Thanks

My house was built in 1950, my guest bath has a fleshy pink color tile with
a brown bull nose tile. I desperately need to find the brown
bullnose.....any suggestions?

We must have had the same designer/builder-ditto w/ the bathroom color
scheme to a 'T' - lol.I am planing a bath remodel in the very near
future. If send me your e-mail addie I will take pictures of the tile and
send them to you. They are kind of a light medium brown.About the same color
as store bought chocolate milk is the closest I can describe the color.
I'll try to gingerly remove them. There will of course be motar on the backs
and some paint on the bullnose. How many do you need? Good Luck Marty

13x13 &20x20...
How about 13's as a border and 20's in the center?
Or,
Clip the corners off some of the 20's and use the 13's as a "dot".
There are many other options, your best bet is to talk to a seasoned
interior decorator.

I am interested in calculating tiles for 425 sq. feet. I like the
hopschotch pattern using 18 x 18 with 6 x 6 tiles. How do I calculate or
if you could just tell me the numbers of tiles I would need to purchase of
each size for this area. Ive been to tile stores in my area and many of
the emloyees aren't sure and tell me to buy more and return what I don't
use.
I guess they are not trained to do the calculations.
Thanking you in advance,
Linda

Linda,
Each large tile is 2.25 square feet. The 6 x 6 tiles are .25 square feet
each. You have to decide your pattern and then do the math. I can't help
you anymore as there is an infinite amount of possiblities with respect to
the pattern you can create.

John,
You bet. Any tile store that just sells ceramic tile. Go there and ask for
the owner or general manager.

To:John Beighle,
I personally recommend your local Habitat For Humanity Rehab Store. Tile
there cost only pennies and you have a great chance to find common and
retro stock. I think I saw the type of tile you were looking for in our
local store for twelve cents a piece!

Just a quick question.I'm laying a ceramic floor with cut tiles that join
other tiles. These cuts are not against the walls.Should I do anything with
these cuts to make them match the other tiles, like sanding or grinding.Or
will they look fine when the job is done?
AsktheBuilder

Clarence,
You can use a grinding stone to make sure the cut edge is not ragged.

We just removed a kitchen island and we have only 4 original ceramic tiles
left to put down, they are no longer available, that leaves a 34x34 space
that we need to fill, do you have any ideas how I can make it look like an
inlaid carpet that was supposed to be there?

Those 2x6 tiles look so familar.
Could they be the same style I remember from the subways and tunnels of
NYC?
Also is there anyway for you to post a pic of the granite "puzzle" you did
for your daughter as that sounds very interesting and inspiring.
Post or email a pic as I would really enjoy seeing it.
Lastly and the reason for my visit was to see just how much the typicial
paterns and styles of today may reflect the styles of the past.
Way too many times I hear and see people who are planning on tearing apart
a perfectly fine (and many times very well done) tile job in a house they
are looking to purchase or already own just to replace it with a neutral
color, and most times also using an inferior quality tile.
Since we are all seeing the designs of the past become tomorrows newest
trends (pedastal sinks, tubs, glass bowl sinks etc etc) is there any chance
that any of the older homes will see their tile designs cherished and saved
from the dumpster?

We have layed a new subfloor in totoal 1 1/2" thick for our new ceramics to
go down on. The floor is not prefectly level due to settling. From the high
point and low point in the floor is about 3/4" over a 300 square foot area.
My question to you -- are we ok to start at the high point and when we get
to the low point beef it up with extra adhesive to match up and stay level?
I understand there is a floor leveler out there but would our suggestion be
ok as well? Our first time laying tile so maybe there is something we are
not thinking about. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

My husband and I are getting ready to put our house up for sale. We have
ceramic tile throughout our kitchen, hallway and bathroom. The tile in the
kitchen popped up and cracked in the center, we removed these pieces and
more thinking we would eventually replace the entire tiled area, there is
now tile missing in a large square shape. We do not have any of the same
tile pieces and have been unable to find them anywhere. What do think our
options are? Will we have to replace the entire tiled area, if so are there
cheaper but fairly nice looking alternatives to tile?
