Fences

Fence Posts

Fence posts have to withstand a tremendous amount of wind force. If the fence post is not properly set, your fence will not hold. Discover a method for your setting wood fence posts so your fences will stand up to the pressure.

Privacy Fence

A privacy fence can offer you lots of peace. Privacy fences can be made from a variety of materials. Vinyl privacy fence is acceptable, but a wood privacy fence is great as well. Evergreen bushes and trees might be a better choice to create privacy. Privacy fence designs are as abundant as stars in the sky.

Fence

A fence can be a useful addition to a home, as long as you have been cleared for construction concerning property and zoning lines. There are many types and materials for fences, such as a chain link fence, wrought iron, wood or vinyl fence. Use only the highest double hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners, so they won't rust.

Invisible Fence

An invisible fence is very effective for pet control. They are not much different than the radio in your home or car. The wire transmits a signal to the compact receiver on your dog's collar. Training your dog to respect his new boundaries is the most important part to the success of the invisible dog fence.

Lasting Materials for Wood Fences

Wood fences come in a variety of options. While CCA treated lumber has been pulled from the market, redwood, cedar and locust are some of the best natural woods to withstand the weather. If you decide to paint a fence, give the wood fence time to expel extra moisture before you paint. Fence posts can also be set in tamped down dirt holes for easy fixes.

Wood Wall Covered in Artificial Stone

Artificial stone can be applied directly to a wood wall substrate for a great stone wall look. The materials used will be: treated lumber for posts and beams; plywood for the sub-wall; and tar paper, galvanized wire lath and mortar for setting the stones.

Books on Fences

Fence building requires planning and reading. The following books about fencing will be labor and time savers and give you some great fence design ideas.

Quality Chain Link Fence Checklist

A chain link fence is strong and long lasting if installed correctly. The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute has published a twenty-point chainlink fence checklist for before, during and after installing a chain link fence.

Chain Link Fence

If installing a chain link fence as a do it yourself project be sure to follow some installation pointers. Select a quality grade strong fence to install, not a flimsy chainlink fence with small posts. The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute has an eight-step guide on how to install chain link fence.

Fences

A chain link fence with vinyl coated chain link is very durable and comes in different colors. Look for a high quality chainlink fence constructed with fabric that is 11.5 or 11 gauge, and make sure local zoning laws allow you to install taller fence heights before installing chain link fences.

Building and Installing a Wood Picket Fence

To build a wood picket fence, you should first plan for post placement and gates. Check the zoning laws to see if they permit picket fences. Pre-cut and pre-treat your wood pickets before installing. It will save you time during the installation and will keep your wood picket fence looking newer for longer.

Wood Picket Design, Scale and Sizing

Wood picket fence designs are already provided by many companies. After you determine the scale and size of the wood picket fence, visit a local fence supplier - they may have what you need. Wood picket fences should reflect the design of your home, but the spacing of wood posts and size of the pickets are up to you.

Wood Picket Fence Materials and Cost Sheet

Wood picket fence designs are many. Here is a sample material and cost sheet for constructing an 8 foot long fence section of wood picket fence I have at my own home.

Repairing Existing Fencing

Do it yourself fence repair is simple. For fence post repair, never try to force the post upright. Dig the dirt out next to the post and then you can pull it back into place. Older wood picket fences may have to be replaced in sections if the wood rots.

Picket Fence

A picket fence creates a traditional look. When you build a picket fence, your obstacles will be zoning laws and specialized saws. Zoning laws tell you where and how you can build. You also need band, radial arm and miter box saws for decorative cuts. Install posts and horizontal beams before placing the 3/4-inch-thick pickets. The design is up to you! Discover some design ideas for picket fences.

Vinyl Fencing Properties

Vinyl fencing is the answer for those who don't want to paint their fences each year. Vinyl fences are also stronger than wood fences and more flexible. However, be aware when installing vinyl fencing, it is more expensive and expands and contracts with changes in temperature.

Vinyl Fence

The vinyl fence got its start from the process of coextrusion - the process that slows the breakdown of vinyl by ultraviolet light. Styles include picket fences, vinyl privacy fences, wrought iron and cross buck. It can cost twice as much as a wood fence and requires more accurate post placement, but usually comes with good, long warranties.

Vinyl Fencing Manufacturers & Warranties

Vinyl fencing is a popular fence material. Here are some vinyl fencing manufacturers. Looking at their warranties is a good way to compare vinyl fence companies.

Vinyl Fencing Installation Tips

The following vinyl fence installation tips will help your vinyl fence last. Vinyl fencing expands and contracts. Dimensions of the vinyl fence must be accurate. If you choose to do it yourself, read the instructions very carefully.
