Insects

Ants

Ants are great insects. Some ants can harm your home and bite you, but others simply want some food. Discover how to stop ants from entering your home.

Insect Identification

Insect identification can put your mind at ease if you are worried about termites because the insects cause great damage. This is why people want to see what termites look like. People just like you desperately want to see termite photos. Termite identification is very important because you want to ensure that any termite control you purchase is targeted to the right insect.

Termites Turn Wood to Dust

Termites are really wonderful insects that help create topsoil. But termite damage in homes is real and termite control is something many people need to know about.

Termites and Mushrooms

Here is an e-mail I received from a reader who wondered about termites being present because of mushrooms in the yard. Termites do not produce mushrooms in your yard, so don't believe a neighbors' misinformation.

Termites

Termites can attack any home. A termite-free house should still get one or two annual visits from a trained pest control professional. Inground termite colony elimination systems are a good way to protect your home. Putting gravel and having positive pitch around your home keep the soil drier, preventing termites from tunneling.

Little Termites Cause Huge Damage

Termites are intelligent insects, but can be conquered by using the right pest control methods. Two methods are injecting repellent chemicals into the soil or using bait stations. Pest management professionals can help eliminate these pests.

Termite

Termite pest control is important to consider before you buy a home with a history of termites. Pest control experts can inspect your home and tell you if the house needs repairs. There are many methods to eliminate termites, but it's better to inspect twice before buying once.

Repairing Termite Damage

Repairing termite damage is necessary, but only when termites are eliminated. Some repairs are simple, while others can be difficult. Structural termite damage is a difficult repair because wires and utilities often pass through the joists. Hire a professional if you have doubts.

Termite Pest Control Research

Termite pest control is a huge industry. A demand for termite control products has lead to new improvements in termite baiting systems and total colony elimination systems. Here are some of the advancements in termite pest control.

Termite Baiting Systems

New baiting systems actually kill termites and termite colonies. These systems are also called total colony elimination systems. There are four major brands of these termite pest control products. The DIY product isn't always trusted to work. Consult professional pest control for help.

Carpenter Bee Control

Carpenter bees seem dangerous, but are mostly not. Carpenter bees are dangerous to the wood on your house. If you don't want to kill carpenter bees, you might focus on carpenter bee control methods.

Repairing Carpenter Bee Damage

Carpenter bees make holes in wood for their nests. Repairing carpenter bee damage is pretty simple. Gather the right tools: cork, dowels, latex wood filler and caulk. These can all be used to fill the holes.

Carpenter Bee Insecticides

To kill carpenter bees, use an insecticide that is either liquid or powder. All the chemicals listed on this page will eliminate carpenter bees if used correctly. There are also dusts that get rid of carpenter bees.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees rarely sting, but they do drill holes into bare or unpainted wood regularly to deposit their young. Pest control methods are primarily to get rid of the larvae by spraying insecticidal dust inside the holes. Another method to kill carpenter bees is to keep susceptible wood painted or apply chemical repellents every 2-4 weeks.

Borate Chemicals for Wood Preservation

Wood preservatives with boron are sold by a couple of companies. Other manufacturers of borate products register them as pesticides. Borate products are helpful in repelling all sorts of insects from wood.

About Borate Chemicals

Borate chemicals are sprayed onto new wood to ward off termites and other insects. It is an easy job and borate products are not new - Europeans, and folks down under in New Zealand and Australia have been using borates with great success for nearly 50 years. Back in 1990, the Australians treated 12 million cubic feet of lumber with borates!

Using Borate Chemicals

Borates can be applied to anything wood or containing wood to repel insects. The chemicals can be sprayed or painted or the lumber can be dipped, flooded or immersed in the borate solution. Borate chemicals can harm pets and plants, so be sure to avoid them.

Termites - Soak Wood with Safe Borates

Borate chemicals are highly toxic to wood boring insects, like termites and fungi but are safe for humans and animals. They come in powdery mixes and can be applied to existing wood. Make sure the one you buy is marked as a wood preservative.

Do Termite Bait Systems Work?

New termite baiting systems have created huge interest among pest control professionals and homeowners. Will they put a complete end to termites? I don't think so. What they offer is the potential for total colony elimination.

Borate Products for Termite Control

Borate chemicals are placed on wood to repel termites and they do an excellent job. Buy these boron-based products at any of the following companies.

Manufacturers of Termite Control Systems

The following is a listing of the four companies that are currently marketing total termite colony elimination baiting systems. DowElanco introduced the first colony elimination system in 1995. The three new players will enjoy success if their systems are effective at killing the worker termites.

Termite Control & Elimination Systems

Termite control comes in many methods. Colony elimination systems or baiting systems became popular in 1995. Barrier chemical methods are still being used, however, to treat many houses, especially new ones. Find out which method or methods are right for your house.

Winged Insects - Termites

Termite infestation can be spotted by first seeing insect wings. Pest control companies use bait systems or borate chemicals to eliminate termites. If you had termites in the past and they were treated, that doesn't mean they'll never come back.

Ants Carpenter

To learn how to get rid of carpenter ants and other information, look in the following magazines. Contact associations about carpenter ants for more great information.

Rid of Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants can be indoors or outdoors. Here are procedures for inspection in both places in your home. Use chemicals to kill carpenter ants after you find the colony with the queen.

Carpenter Ants Control

Carpenter ants don't eat wood like termites, but they do pose a threat to our homes. Carpenter ants will bite through wood to make their nests and eat the food in our houses. Carpenter ants also spread their nests out and can be hard to find. Read about the habits of these pests to learn how to get rid of carpenter ants.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants do not eat wood like termites, but they do burrow into wood for nests. They can cause serious structural damage. For carpenter ant control, use chemical treatments against the parent colony and all other nests to eliminate them.

Termite Treatment

Termites have a whole industry dedicated to getting rid of them. The following manufacturers sell termite control products, including baiting or colony elimination systems, insecticides and liquid barriers.

Termite Facts & Tips

Termites populate every state in the United States. Learn about these pests to learn how to control them with the following termite facts and tips. Have a termite inspection done twice a year to prevent your house from falling victim to termites.

Understand Termite Society for Termite Control

Termites cause billions worth of damage to the United States each year. Termites are smart and have a highly organized society where each termite has a function. To get rid of termites for good, get rid of the worker termites who provide food to the colony.

Termite Colony Elimination Systems vs. Barrier Chemicals

Total colony elimination systems use bait traps to poison the worker termites and kill off entire colonies. Previously, termites were stopped by chemical barriers that weren't always effective and harmed the environment.

Termite Elimination

To get rid of termites, you can't repel them - you have to eliminate them. One termite pest control method is to place plastic monitoring stations in the soil around your house. Once termites are detected, toxic food is placed in the containers. Have an exterminator check these periodically.
