Judging from Simpson's bulletin, proper deck construction requires very careful calculation and thoughtful assembly. I never knew the importance of blocking to enhance rim joist rigidity or the use of structural connectors to achieve the desired integrity.
I admire your necessary brevity in the deck railings video. This topic does deserve a fully detailed video. Anyone looking for free info would do well to address themselves to vendors such as Simpson who appear to offer a first-class product line and who are, no doubt, very familiar with structural connections.
Lap joints have been used forever but I've never seen such a glaringly poor application as you showed in your video.
Do it right, not over, indeed !
