Q&A /

Large Model Rail Cars

I need your help.

Are you a model railroader? What brand / model are these cars? I have others like them.

These are BIG cars. Think garden railroad. Look at the tape measure in some of the photos to see how long they are.

They fit PERFECTLY on the large Buddy L track that's got an inner gauge of 3 and 1/8 inches.

This is the track that looks like REAL railroad track - the same profile.

Can you leave a comment below or a URL to any site you discover that can help me positively identify these cars?

I contacted the Buddy L museum and they said they are NOT Buddy L rolling stock.

    Hi Tim,
I know from time to time you run a sale on your check lists, e books, etc.
Maybe with the holidays coming up it might be a good time again. I am still on the fence about building the shed that I ordered plans from you. My kids are thinking they might order the video series for my gift. You may have one or two more procrastinators reading your newsletter. Just a thought. Best,Dave

    Hi Tim,
We just went through this after my step father passed. We had a garage that was literally packed wall to wall, floor to ceiling. My advice is to check with railroad clubs in your area. I'm sure you will find one or two. If your uncle had any railroad magazines, there will be list of people looking to buy collections. Good luck, Tim.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Couldn't find a standard scale for 3-1/8". Look for Rail modeling standard scales on Wikipedia. Nothing that NMRA has that would have been common in the US. The scale is definitely larger than G scale, which is fairly common for garden railroads. Is there any information on the frames of the trucks of the cars or tender?

Hi Tim, I agree with Rose; American Pickers had several cars about that size on their program awhile back. Can't recall the brand name, but looked very much like the ones you have.

Tim, TCA is your best bet for information. This is the group that specializes in really old toy trains. There were literally dozens of not hundreds of manufacturers in the first three decades of the 1900s. I have a few books but couldn't find anything.

Tim, the website http://www.mylargescale.com might have some information for you. Some these large scale model railroads come in different scales like 1:20.3, 1:22.5 and up. there might be some information for you there.

I have a Buddy L locomotive painted what appears to be the same color green as that tender which I purchased at the York Train meet in October. I have to make a pilot for it and wonder where I could get matching paint.
