Bonus question.
I have torn many a house apart and discovered t&g 1x6's as sheathing. Are you asking which came first?
Framing Squares now some of them are "T" shaped as well as the traditional "L" shape
This quiz made me think. Good job.
Back into my ancient days
Got the bonus wrong. Also Tentest (there were other names for it) was used . My present home built in '69 has Tentest on the studs. At the top and bottom corners of the walls, the studs have a 45 degree 2 x 4 embedded on their flat to keep the walls from shearing. It's a poor arrangement for insulation. I pulled all the interior fibreglass out, replaced it with mineral fibre and added 1" of polyiso sheeting and re-drywalled.
I've seen ship lap used as sheathing and in the case of my house (built 1912) the sheathing is rough cut 1" boards of varying widths, no T&G, made from local white pine. The builder added lath & rough plaster on the inside of the sheathing to block any gaps between boards, sort of like "chinking" between logs.
My New England house was built in 1856. While the sheathing boards were unlikely cut on site, they are rough-sawn 1x, at least 12". Concrete foundation? Nope - Fieldstone and mortar.
I guess the bonus answer depends on where you live.
what a coincident, the sheathing subject came up after golf yesterday when one individual said it didn't start until 1982 when his house was built in La Jolla.
Fun quiz, but the links are not android friendly(opens gibberish webpages), and the quiz isn't apple friendly(whole quiz moves to the bottom every time you click an answer)
Can't wait to click on all those links from my pc later
Thanks, Tim ... I hope I'm not one of those dumb 72 yr-old broads
pretty neat quiz, except I figured a T square, not the L shape (I have & use both)... also was looking for lathe and plaster something for the bonus question... killed my score
great quiz, very good questions. 10/10 recommend taking this quiz to study or just for fun
