David from Longford, Ireland, wrote me with a fascinating question about building an outdoor barbeque. He's wondering about the correct brick to use.
"I'm building a DIY bbq and need around 40-50 bricks. I was in Homebase and they have red paving slabs at 49c each, which is the price I was hoping to spend.
Other shops have proper red bricks for $1.50 each, which would break me 🙁
I'm wondering would the paving bricks do the job (using fire cement also) and stand the heat?
They are the same size as the other ones. Would they end up cracking? The BBQ is only going to be used the very odd time."
Here's my answer to David:
David, I have a saying: Do It Right, Not Over!
That says it all in this situation. I realize money is tight - for many of us including me. But you're only talking $50 here.
What is your TIME worth? If you use inferior brick, and they WILL CRACK from the heat, then you'll have to rebuild the entire barbeque.
