Caulk Video
The key to caulking is the size of the hole on the caulking tube nozzle. The opening should be the same size as the gap your are caulking. Start cutting the end of the tube a little at a time until you get the hole just right. Be sure to purchase the correct caulk. It should be siliconized acrylic latex caulk that is paintable.
To caulk, place the caulk gun nozzle right in the crack and gently start to squeeze the trigger. Don't over caulk. Just enough to cover the gap. Once the gap is filled, use your finger to smooth the caulk around the crack. Then take a sponge, with very little water in it, and wipe down the caulk to finish smoothing. Now, you are ready to paint that area. This will make a bid difference in your paint project.
I have caulked a 2X4 to concrete (A cross design in the patio with 2X4's) and now would like to add to existing caulk to raise the surface because one 2X4 section is not level with surface. Can I caulk over
caulk ? It's 100% silicone.
Yes, you can. GL as we say in Morse.
Excellent video Tim.
A question, how do you recommend storing a partially used tube of this type calk?
Another ? - when you lived in Cincinnati, did you ever provide home inspections for buyers? I used a person recommended by a co-worker at P&G, when I moved to Cincy back in 1989, but never met the gentleman, just wondered if it was you? I now live in the Chicago burbs, not quite as cold as NH, but quite cold the past couple of weeks!
I enjoy your weekly article in the Tribune, but am likely canceling that subscription so need to find the column. Any tips on locating it? Shaw Media publishes my local paper (Northwest Herald) so I will request they run the articles but I never see anything from Tribune Content Agency in their publications. Probably because they align with another suburban paper (Daily Herald) on sports and editorials, I know the CFO personally and President via community events at Shaw so will make the request.
When using a finger to smooth the caulk, it helps greatly to first dip it in water with a drop of dish soap such as Dawn. That prevents the caulk from sticking to your finger. Using a sponge may not be necessary after that.
