Men's Crusher Hat Keeps You Cool and Shaded

Three years ago I wore a wide-brimmed hat all summer as I re-roofed my house. It was an ill-fitting leather hat that cooked my skull. I wish I had had the Duluth Trading Men's Crusher Hat that I tested yesterday while doing amateur radio at the historic Pumpkin Seed Bridge over the Pemigewasset River in central New Hampshire!

Here are a side and back view. You can see how it keeps the sun off my neck. The upper sides of the hat are a mesh allowing air to cool my bald spot. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

I'm praying for a Morse code contact. Doing low-powered high-frequency radio in a narrow gorge is not the best way to capture invisible radio waves from the ether. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Crusher Hat Preserves Duluth Trading Heritage

I've been a fan of Duluth Trading gear for decades. I was one of their first customers. I remember clearly when they started selling products to contractors.

Before the Crusher Hat arrived, I already knew it was going to be excellent. CLICK HERE to order one.

It's pretty obvious this hat works. My face is fully shaded and I'm not suffering from heat exhaustion because my perspiration can evaporate through the polyester mesh upper sides of the hat. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Four Colors

The Crusher hat you see on my head is their Steel Blue. They had two other colors that I was quite interested in, the Frosted Moss (a very interesting green), and Bark. It's a bold medium brown color. Let me know in the comments below what you think of them. CLICK HERE to see the colors using the change color tool in the right column.

Fit is Perfect | Crusher Hat Sizes are Accurate

I have a tough time finding hats that fit. My wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed (Kathy), tells me it's because of my ego. But I digress.

Suffice it to say, the 2XL size was perfect for my head. On hot days I know I'll appreciate the CoolDry® sweatband inside the hat.

You can see through to my hand inside the hat. The top and brim are solid to protect you from the searing UV and IR waves from the demon sun. The sides, though, are an open mesh allowing cooling breezes to envelope your noggin with fresh air. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

The Federal Trade Commission requires me to tell you that Duluth Trading sent me the Crusher Hat for free. After wearing it, I'd gladly pay for it. It does me no good to impune my integrity by telling you it's a great hat if it sucks. You'll never again trust one of my reviews.

You might want to try this hat sometime. I have worn several of the styles over the years. I have not worn a Duluth product but have had other good reviews of their products.

  2. john says:

Tim, your May 20, 2018 newsletter may be one of your best ever.

    • Tim Carter says:

Thanks John! Why did you like it more? I think it's because of all the colorful photos and less text. Count on more of those as I thought it look splendid.

  3. Norman Waters says:

Cool hat, plus it's from Duluth known for long lasting products.

  4. Joan says:

Tim, I'm going to get one of those hats for my hubby.
It looks like his neck and monk's head will be better protected.

  5. Mark A. Rehl says:

Tim - entertain the idea of getting their heavy leather belt with two rows of holes ALL the way around. I have one that ALWAYS wear whenever I pick up a chain saw or am going to venture out into the countryside. Why? Because it is one hell of a tourniquet! I also wear their boars hide slip ons which they replaced immediately when some stitching cam lose. And finally I have palm fiber crusher hat which I love. Even my grandkids love wearing it when they think that I am not looking.

    • Tim Carter says:

      Mark,

Love love love the idea of the belt. I wear STIHL chaps all the time when using a chain saw, but it's a good idea for plan B! I'll look into the palm fiber crusher hat.

  6. Eric says:

Looks nice, and similar in ways to my Tilley Airflow hat. The mesh is smaller on the Airflow which may be because they are trying to meet specific UV protection ratings. Not sure. Tilley is a "serious" hat maker and offers a great warranty (even for loss).

Feel free to delete during your comment review process... I’m pretty upset that you made me admit that I love your blue eyes. Now that the truth is out I’m pretty pleased we crossed that line and I clicked the link. Hopefully you can get enough revenue from Duluth Trading to be able to eliminate the ads that pop up and tell me I won an amazon gift card and when you select close for the pop up they immediately forward you away from the article and to some scammer site. I had to close the tab twice and go back to your page in order to actually view your article. This is on my mobile phone as that is where I read all my emails.

    • Tim Carter says:

TNX. I get ZILCH from Duluth Trading at this point because I failed to look to see if they have an affiliate program. They didn't used to but now I see they do. I'll be signing up for it as soon as I post this reply to you.

Yeah, sorry about that popup. It's the pain you have to deal with for *free* content. I'm complaining to my ad network about it because it is pretty obnoxious.

But the only way I can make all my content free is to display the ads. Premium paid content solutions don't work well here because there's so much FREE home improvement information out there.

    Tim,

I bought this hat two years ago and love it! I have a green one so I can get lost in the trees of GA1 Just kidding. It gives very good shade protection along with being airy and reasonably cool. During the sweltering Dawg days down this way in the summer, it's a challenge to get both sun protection and coolness at the same time.

Love the pictures of NH as I grew up in the New England area and know a good part of ME, NH and MA. Spent some time in the other three states, but not enough to really say I know that well.

  9. Brian Weeden says:

There are undoubtedly other free sources of information, but none I'm aware of with your combination of wit & candor! Keep it coming & don't worry about charging a fee down the road--after all, those other sources know what their "stuff" is worth!

  10. Richard Habicher says:

What is the price of a hat like that and do they ship overseas? Postage these days is high but if the product is as good as You write than I could be persuaded to give the Yankee hat a go in Australia. I bet there will be opinions against some straw products that I have been happy with. I have some of them and do like some more than others.

    • Tim Carter says:

      Richard,

The price as of May 2018 is $34.50 US. I had multiple links up above you could click to see the actual listing. Also, a few of the photos are directly linked.

I've got no clue what shipping to you Down Under might be, but I'm telling you it's a great hat. The wretched leather one I talked about up above was an Australian hat. I'm throwing it away today. It's a decroted piece of crap.

  11. Fred says:

    How do you wash it?

    • Tim Carter says:

When you went to the Duluth Trading website and read the care label inside the hat, what did you discover? Isn't that the best place to get the answer instead of trusting someone on the Internet that doesn't make the hat?
