GDPR B * * * * * * * Survey
Please take this short survey and be SURE to leave a comment below the survey to let all know how you feel about the new European GDPR regulations. I'm VERY interested in seeing comments from citizens of Europe. I'm curious about how you feel about the GDPR regs.

Does anyone plan to contest these “laws”? What did the US congress do that allowed this? How soon can they change it?
I find it interesting that another country laws can impact us the way it has. What I do know is that all these companies are updating there privacy terms and we HAVE to comply to continue using whatever products. Maybe next year we will have to ask to comb our hair....
This is the type of thing that our forefather's tried to get away from when they left Europe in the first place.
Good Lord, Tim, I cannot believe you wrote that misleading "description" of what the GDPR is trying to do! It's not a restriction on, or penalty for, the actions of citizens, it's an attempt to rein in the actions of internet companies that collect and use customers' data. The fact that many companies are applying the new rules across all territories is THEIR OWN CHOICE, and only a benefit to the people who live in those other places.
Don't you think it's better to have to "opt in" to invasive or annoying practices, then be opted in by default and then have to search endlessly to find ways to get out? If that's so onerous then perhaps companies should not create so many situations that we'd WANT to opt out of! Your characterization of this new law, and your baiting "rhetorical question" about toilets are entirely off the mark. It's not about having to ask permission to do what we want to do, it's about having to GIVE permission before companies do things to us!
I'm thankful that the Europeans have the balls to create this kind of legislation, which American politicians avoid because they'd prefer to let businesses do whatever they like to customers and have "the market" sort it out. I'm a believer in free-market economics, but I also know that businesses often don't have the best interests of their customers in mind.
Though I did like the name Mordorshire...
Eric,
You say, "Don't you think it's better to have to "opt in" to invasive or annoying practices, then be opted in by default and then have to search endlessly to find ways to get out?"
Have you felt that way about AsktheBuilder.com?
Have you been deathly worried about the use of cookies on my website all these years?
What about all the websites that don't do bad things? Why should WE have to suffer?
Why should I have to pay out of my pocket to fulfill these regulations so you can continue to get free content?
Look at the other side of the issue. I get the feeling you're just looking out for Eric.
Has anyone else noticed how the US congress is being filled with more and more idiots every year. Only a congress of idiots would let Europe dictate how we run and use our internet. We need a groundswell of change to logical and sane rules and laws. This applies not only to the new GDPR crap, but back to the the basics of our US Constitution.
I can see where they are coming from but like most Government regulations they never seem to think the whole thing through. And what right do they have to force their laws on someone living in another Country. If I were some of these large companies like Google, Amazon or Ebay I would tell them we will not do business in your Country. It would never come to that because the people would revolt. Typical European arrogance.

I welcome any laws that protect me from websites that may try to use my data against my best interests. Fining is aimed to try to discourage major international corporations from exploiting your data to their best advantage without your consent.
Wait a minute! I thought we freed ourselves from European oppression over 240 years ago. And then we spent American lives, blood and treasure to save most of Europe from European oppression in WWI, WWII and the Cold War. And this is how they repay us, with European oppression? How about if they all go pound sand! And where are our gutless, corrupt politicians?
The web site for WTOP (Washington DC) has a new banner today "This website is not intended for users located within the European Economic area." I assume that their lawyers will assert "If you don't like the way we handle your data, don't trespass on our site." Seems like a simple solution to me!
Bingo. That's exactly why you're seeing that.
That's a temporary fix, but I believe it doesn't fulfill the regs if you drill down deep.
It's oppressive mind-numbing legislation.
