Tim built custom homes and did ultra-custom remodeling for 20+ years before launching his Ask the Builder media presence. He was selected as one of the Big 50 by Remodeling magazine in 1993. This award gave birth to Ask the Builder in October 1993. Tim also operates https://DrawPlumbingPlans.com. His @askthebuilder YouTube channel was the first home improvement channel on YouTube.
Read your newspaper articles on oxalic acid. I strongly suggest not using or advising its use. As you point out it is acidic and toxic. Instead use Iron Out (or Super Iron Out). This is a buffered solution (non-acidic), non-toxic, safe for septic systems and available in many stores. It is made for all the uses you describe but much, much safer to use! I use it to clean rusty rock and mineral specimens.
Hello Tim,
I read your article "Make your asphalt shingle last 50 years" on 10/22/2022 and found it very interesting about the copper strips. I had a complete tear off and new Owens Corning roofing system (Duration Shingles) installed the week before. I'm curious to what is involved in adding the copper strips to my new roof without introducing a place for water to leak through, break existing seals or warranty issues
Tim, I read your article about cleaning tile grout. I had the same problem, the top surface of the grout is below the tile. While watching Today’s Homeowner I tried their suggestion. Use toilet bowl cleaner, pour the gel in the grout, wait 30-40 minutes, scrub and wipe up. I did this on a small surface to see if it worked. What a difference it made.
