Investing in Advice Survey - Don't Hold Back
SPONSORS /
I have gone thru most of your videos concerning my problems and found the answers I needed.
But I would call before I spent any great amount of money or made a permanent construction decision that I could not live with.
However, I am older than most DIY'ers, 92, and like to think I am wiser.
Tim,
Regarding your advice survey: As an degreed engineer, I have undertaken many, many complex home improvement projects (outbuildings, kitchens, additions, full bathroom remodels, large tile and wood floor installations, etc.), all with great success. I haven't hired "experts" (for the most part) as too many contractors I've met aren't much more skilled than I and a very large number won't bid or build the job as detailed (failure to follow blueprints, use required materials, etc).
My method for success - there is a wealth of written information (books, magazines, etc) by true professionals. You can go to Taunton Press and Fine Homebuilding, for example, and learn a LOT. Yes, it takes some investment in time and brainpower to absorb the methods and procedures, but you'll have a sound foundation to work from.
The only times I hire out is where the project is too big, complicated, or time consuming for me to tackle alone, such as installing a new furnace (and the major replumbing that was required) - it's not that I couldn't do it, but I couldn't have accomplished the work in the three days the three person crew did. My wife would not have agreed to being without hot water for the much longer period it would have taken me to finish.
If you're wondering, I live in central Connecticut.
Interesting survey
Thanks for the opportunity
I think this is great, but I honestly think people don't contact experts because they don't know who to trust. There are so many contractors, handymen, etc that it can feel overwhelming. We need outlets added to our garage. We won't attempt that ourselves, but even starting down the road to finding an electrician seems daunting.
We are considering painting our house and trim. The house is mainly stucco with wood trim, base of the house is brick on the front facade. Is it safe to power wash stucco? We were going to wash it to decide if it really needs painted or only the trim.
Finding true experts to provide consults is by far the biggest challenge. We don’t think that experts (like yourself) really get how challenging it is to find the right consultant. In your material on remodeling, you suggest going to a contractor’s supply store, ask to speak to the manager, ask for names. This has not worked for us.
