As a kid I loved all things construction. Mike Mulligan was one of my favorite books. A new small housing development was being built a few houses down from our house (it had been a farm). They were using that type of shovel but I think that it was diesel not steam. Of course they had to dig a ramp to get out of the basement when it was finished. I can't remember how they got rid of the dirt. Many, many happy hours watching.
