Summer’s End John Prine

Summer's End by John Prine

Watch the video below. Listen closely to the lyrics.

I had the good fortune fifty years ago to see John Prine in concert. It was a small venue in Cincinnati.

I'm not quite sure people understood at the time how talented he was. In my opinion, he was in the same class as Bob Dylan.

That said, it turns out John had the ability over time to create amazing new songs late in his career. Bob didn't.

Here's one of my favorite songs and it's one I listen to each Labor Day.

After you listen to the song, watch the video just below it by the folks John hired to create the stunning music video.

Well Tim, you did it again. What a wonderful and heartfelt video of so much of what happens to many people. Tank you for sharing it with all of us.

John Prine has been on my and my wife's very short list of great lyricists-performers since his earliest records. He could capture a feeling in words like few songwriters, and the genuineness and generosity of his recordings and shows connected him with his listeners as Dylan's fans never could connect with him. Prine was intimate, a friend. Dylan was and is remote, a genius but a cold abstraction.

  4. Robin Swenson says:

Thank you for this. I am a musician, and have always been drawn toward melody and harmony; the 'instrumental' elements of songs. As I grow older I find myself increasingly more aware of lyrics. John Prine's lyrics are absolutely brilliant.

  5. Bob Clark says:

Touching lyrics when you learn the reason they were written. Curious how you chose this song?

  6. Judy Hannon says:

Thank you for posting this beautifully created video. I've never seen how the video was made. My husband and I have been listening to John Prine for years. We've seen him several times here in southeast Michigan. We also were able to talk to him after the show on 2 different occasions. We've taken our kids to a few of his shows. They grew up listening to him and now as adults still love his music. John Prine was one of Bob Dylan's favorite songwriters.

It reminds me of what's really important in our lives.... people not things.

Loved it! Brings to mind middle America and the times I spent on my uncle's farm in rural Wisconsin during summer vacations. Being raised in Chicago I had not experienced what farm life was about. It was hard work but provided a good wholesome quality of life. The farm house with my uncles wife and children had that feeling of what "home" is. "Come on home" brought back memories of what were the best summers of my life. Thanks for that.
