Quiz - I cheated. My globe was too handy.
Paul - old saying: Cheaters will be chased to the gates of Hell by Winners.
I had a reasonable clue that it is Maine because I grew up in Newfoundland, which has the closest point in North America (Cape Spear) to Europe. Maine is just to the South and West of the Island of Newfoundland so it was a reasonable guess
Yep, wrong here too. Never too late to learn something though, right? Thanks Tim! Have a blessed day and thanks for the morning fun!
great circle route wins every time
Went to Maine where it is advertised as the Easrernmost town in the USA
Uh, you're NOT supposed to research the answer. You're supposed to guess.
Knew it's not like putting a grade-school Mercator map on the desk and laying a ruler on it. Great circle is the only true distance. Knowing that, I figured it was part of the state with the most easterly longitude, Maine.
Easy for me. Great circle routes are well-known by ship drivers too.
At first I chose Outer Banks because I thought that as eastern most, but given the opportunity to resubmit I chose Maine, only because I thought that to be the most unlikely choice.
Tim, Yikes! You ask 'A,' but all your answers are 'B.' You ask which "state." Each answer you provide is a LOCATION within a state, which in fact locations within states are not states. Yes, I'm a college professor and I teach my students that they are to answer according to what they are asked. In this quiz the real answer is "none of these." With that being said, I know the answer to be The State of Maine.
I guess I need my glasses checked. Each possible answer that I look at above has a STATE name in it. I provided the locations within each state so people could get a feel for what sticks out into the ocean.
I actually teach the great circle routes so was looking for someplace in Maine before I saw the choices. Would have needed a map if there were more Maine options though.

I have a question that has been bugging me since day one of receiving your news letters. How can someones response to your articles etc. and you give a reply in the same email as the article? Maybe its because I am on Pacific time and you are on the left coast. However that would be cheating. Or do you have a favored list of subscribers that get the info ahead of the rest of the country?
The newsletter is sent to every subscriber at the same time by special software. I can create the newsletter days ahead of time and tell the software to send it at any time in the future. I'm quite confused by your claim of "giving a reply in the same email as the article." Can you show me an example of that?
Still remember those crazy coordinates trans-packing the Pacific coming home on navy ships, ergo, Great Circle. Nevertheless, sticking with the Outer Banks.....member, Flat Earth Society.
Just thought about longitude rather than latitude. I am not a commercial pilot but my dad taught me about Lucky Lindy and the Great Circle route.
You always write about Maine and New England, so it was an educated guess...lol
