Juan,
I cover this in a few other articles on this website. Bottom line is you dislodged pieces of sediment in the pipes when you turned the water back on. The faucet aerators are clogged as is the toilet fill valve. Read my past articles to discover how easy it is to solve the issues you have.

I have a 'remeha avanta plus' boiler showing zero on the pressure meter. What do i need to do to sort this out? i think the meter should show about '2' or '1.5'. My toilet has also started to make a loud noise when its flushed. is this related to the same problem?

at times my pressure will just about knock the shower head off and other times it barely trickles out and it is at all outlets not just one or two could the pressure switch itself be going bad or maybe the bladder tank? the system is 7 yrs old and i have the pressure switch set at 50 i dont think the pump is the culprit but i could be wrong but i can go turn it on and its great strong pressure and turn around and turn it on again and it just about stops any ideas ? thanks Dan

When the toilets are flushed or faucets are turned on I lose only cold water pressure. The hot water continues to work fine. What could cause this?

Dan,
None other than to check to make sure that sediment is not the culprit.

Your pressure is dropping because the supply lines are fed by a branch line that is too small. Read all of my columns about water-pressure problems.

This morning I got up brushed my teeth and everything was fine. Approx 15-20 minutes later my husband went to get in the shower and there was a VERY visable drop in water pressure. I checked all of the valves downstairs and outside and don't see anything that would be causing the problem. Any ideas of what I should do or check to determine why the sudden drop in water pressure. Thanks so much for your help.

what is a reasonable water pressure in my house? With no water users on I have 52 psig at my deep sink. With one shower running the water pressure drops to 21 psig. With one shower and one sink running it drops to 14 psig. So what pressure at what load is the question. Thanks for any help. Hap

20 Jan 2008, 14:07
Hap,
You should not be below 30 psi. If you have all or many fixtures demanding water, it would drop below that. I have 85 psi at my own home if that is of interest to you.

Pressure to new sink low. Shut off water at valves under sink for 1-2 days. Ripped out old. Put in new sink, now trickle out of both lines (hot worse). Rest of house fine. Someone said debris in line only supplying the kitchen. How common is that? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Brian,
Go watch this video and watch about halfway into it how I flush the lines of debris:

http://www.askthebuilder.com/How_to_Install_a_Kitchen_Faucet_Video.shtml

So go do that with the supply lines disconnected from the faucet. If you get great flow, this tells you that you clogged the faucet cartridge and/or aerator with debris.

Thanks much for this site/your time! Very educational and helpful.

Our toilet started to lose pressure with every other flush yesterday (one flush fine, next flush weak/non-effective, next flush good, next weak again). This happened after the flap became disconnected and the toilet ran for a few hours before we discovered it. (Possibly related/unrelated: our kitchen sink is directly on the other side of the wall, and the drain pipes off one side of that sink keeps coming uncaulked/unconnected. It was unconnected yesterday when this started. I haven't reset it yet. Perhaps it's throwing the pressure off?)

What's going on? Will this eventually correct itself or is there something I can/should do to get it back on track?

Thanks for whatever you can suggest.

Case,
Flushing issues are not a water-pressure problem *if* the toilet has a traditional gravity-flow tank. If you have a pressure-assist unit, then maybe a piece of sediment is in the fill valve.

I live in a split level house that is 40 years old. The previous owner built the house mainly out of concrete (above, at and below grade is concrete). This makes it a challenge with repairs. The only line that does not have good pressure is the hot water line running to my dishwasher and kitchen sick (same line). Every other line in the house is great. I have replaced the faucet recently and it did not help.

I read in earlier comments that a normal range for water PSI in the home plumbing system is 40-60psi. I also read that your house has 85 psi. What is the maximum that on could go to before you have pipe/system issues (i.e. leaking joints or value leaks)?

The reason I ask is that my system is set at 60psi, but when one faucet is turned on it drops 30 psi and with a 2nd faucet on it drops to 20 psi. The only other factor is that the pressure coming into the house is only 70 psi. Isn't pressure from the street normally higher than this?

I would not go above 90 psi in any situation. You could have pressure issues directly related to pipe sizing.

For the past month, we have had very low HOT water pressure in all showers and sinks in the house. cold water pressure is great everywhere. the local water authority said we have 80psi of pressure coming into the house. called a plumber who said we have very hard water (17g)and need a water softner to improve the water pressure. is that right? could calcium and other deposits in hot water tank and pipes cause hot water pressure problems? thanks.

21 Mar 2008, 08:27
Nina,
There could be a sediment blockage at the hot-water outlet at the top of the heater. It could also be at a valve location if you have one on the hot-water line as it leaves the heater. The blockage could also be on the cold-water line leading into the heater.

Greetings,

I've got a problem with low water pressure in my entire house, which is about 25 years old. I have the water valve that looks like the blue hand-turned one in the first pic of this article and it's turned all the way.

However, there's metal 5-inch cone-like thing with a nut and square bolt at the "point" of the cone, a few inches below the blue valve on the water pipe. I hear that this may be another pressure valve but don't want to touch it because I'm not sure.

There's also a valve in a very small pit in my front yard and that's turned all the way on as well. To make things more strange, I notice that the water pressure improves greatly in the winter.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

My house is 3 1/2 years old. Ever since we moved in I have low water pressure. I can't run the washer and try to take a shower at the same time because the pressure is low so I have to shut off the washer for awhile. It's like that through my whole house. When my husband and I moved in two pressure switches broke and my husband replaced it and it's been working since then but no change in the water pressure. When I read the gauge it says 68. Should I call the person who installed this?

We just finished our bathroom remodel. However the new tub & shower faucet (Pegasus) doesn't work well -- when we lift the knob on the spout for shower, we have to wait for 1-2 minutes for the water out from the head; meanwhile the spout still has water pouring out until the shower head works fully. We called the factory, but they said it is caused by the low water pressure in our house. But our previous faucet had worked fine before the remodeling. Anyway can solve this problem? Many thanks!

I have low water pressure only for my hot water. It is really dramatic in the master bath and has been this way since I moved in the house last August. The water valves are both fully open and the cold water comes out strong. With the hot you have to get it just right for a reasonable amount of water pressure to come in. However, at times the hot water will disappear completely with the knob complete turned on causing a cold shower.

The kitchen sink is similar, but to a much, much lesser degree. The hot water never disappears. the pressure is just lower than the cold water.

All my faucets, toilets, etc. are experiencing pulsating water when in use. It is not air in the pulsations. I am on well water. My question is; is the problem the result of a lower water level in the well, the submersable pump, the pressure (bladder) tank or perhaps something else?

This is weird. The pressure throughout my house id fine except the kitchen sink. It's OK and then drops off until almost ziltch. You start the dishwasher and it comes back again to full force. I recently changed out my electric water heater for a natural gas one. Both of the water heaters ae the same size, but now that I have changed out the water heaer my water pressure has changed. Now when I try and shower in the basement shower I lose all hot water pressure throughtout the entire house. Also, my cold water pressure is much lower as well. This all changed when I switched out my water heater. The pressure i fine in the first floor as long a I don't have anything on in the basement, but when I turn on the basement water everyhing changes. Is there a device I can attach to my water line, both hot and cold individually or directly after my water meter, to increase the waer pressure thoughout my entire house? I too am having low water pressure everywhere in the house. The water will start off very good, but within about 1 or 2 minutes it drops to about 1/4 the pressure. If I am using a hose (single) in the backyard, its almost impossible to take a shower or use water anywhere else because the pressure is so low. If I turn off the hose, it will stay low everywhere else until all water is turned off for about 15 or 20 minutes - then water pressure will seem normal again when you turn on the water and repeat this pattern.

I do not think its a block in the line, as the pressure would not be high/normal then drop off like that. I do not think its the water softener as the lines outside are not run through that (they are outside that loop) and have the same issue. The main water valve into the house is fully turned on, so I am not sure what the issue could be and was thinking of calling the water company but thought you might have an idea.

Thanks for any help

I recently installed a new water heater in my mother-in-law's double-wide. It's been about 3 months since. Everything was good until about 4 days ago. The kitchen has lost all water pressure to the sink and dishwasher. The water from the faucet dribbles out and the dishwasher gets no water whatsoever. I have checked for blockages and leaks and found neither. All the valves are completely open. The bathroom at the back of the house has excellent pressure, but the the guest bathroom has about 50% pressure. The house is about 20 years old and has never had prssure issues before. What could cause such a drastic change?

I have recently moved into a new flat. The water pressure is low and there is a pump which increases it when the taps/dishwasher are turned on. The problem is that when turning on the shower the pump does not kick in at all. Also the pump will only kick in when the taps are turned on fully in a certain position (the hot and cold both run into one tap). Don't know alot about this so any comments would be appreciated.

Tim,

I live in a 20 year old house and have had great water pressure until about 8 weeks ago. Here is what is happening: when water is fist turned on (ex. sink) the pressure will be very high and within seconds will severely drop off. I had the water company come out to check pressure at the meter which they measured to be 120psi. I do not know the psi in the house. I do not have a pressure regulator in the house, it must be buried. Could it be air in the line or my regulator is going bad?

Thx...Olaf

I live on the first floor of a two-story condominium. The valve that connects both pipes belonging to my upstairs neighbor and mine is outside my front unit. Approximately 4-5 months ago, I had my kitchen remodeled and my sink replaced. I turned off the valve once, for about 5 minutes, during this remodeling. Yesterday, my neighbor said he has very low pressure in his unit and is blaming it on the remodeling and me turning the valve on and off. There is nothing wrong with my pressure. A plumber said there is dirt in the pipes. Could I have caused this or be responsible for his low water pressure?

We have 2 full bathrooms. One bathroom has great water pressure and the other has barely a trickle. Toilet works fine but tub and sink have almost no pressure. It's barely a trickle. What can we do to fix this? Hate to pay a plumber as my husband is a great handy man.

I have just installed a new bath and I have made the connection with the flexi pipes you can buy.

When I turned the water back on, the pipes started to rattle and the water was reduced to a trickle in the kitchen only. Please help.

Right before we started an addition to our home (2 new bdrooms and 1 bath) we found out we had two leaks in our existing house. We had to repipe the whole house, before the repipe; our old shower did not have any hot pressure problem. We were using the old shower even though it didn't have a lot of pressure. This old shower was going to be remodeled so the fix was not postponed. Now that the remodeled is finished, new faucet was installed, everything new; but we still had no hot water pressure, is only in the shower, the hot water in the sink in the same bathroom has pressure, the kitchen sink behind this bathroom has good pressure the new bathroom that was added has no problem. What could have cause this low pressure problem and only in the shower? My next step is to replace the heater; whichi is very old and needs to be replaced but I don't think this will solve the problem. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a problem about three days ago I started to notice low water preassure in some areas in my house I called the water service for my area they came and told me that it was the water pressure valve outside my house. well today i changed that valve and I still have low pressure in the downstairs restoom. but no in the kitchen which is almost next to the restroom. I also drain the water heater because, mainly is the hotwater. and I still have that problem.

We just built a new house low water pressure when we turn on the Dish Washer, Children Shower, washer, Hot Tub, the volume is low. We install a frost free fouce 3 feet from the meter turn on all of the above the water pressure at frost free fouce is 21 lbs with all of the above turn of we have 70 pound of pressure. The Utility Distict main line is a 4 inch from the main line to the water meter the utility ran a 1 (one) inch. 2000 feet service line to the water meter. Could the problem be the 1 (one) service line

I just recently moved into a home, we have had some great water pressure, and continue to have good pressure everywhere except the kitchen sink, the spray hose on the sink has to be utelized to get the pressure desired...any idea why? thanks Gilbert

I checked my shut off valves,so I thought it might be sediment blocking my pipes. Turns out I get water pressure at 4am because my neighborhood grew too big for the cities mainline to support. I urge you to test your pressure at 4am before you attempt anything.

I live way up on a hill. I am hooked up on city water, but i have a pump under the house to get the water into th ehouse pipe system. For about th elast month and a half we have been without water. I have rebuilt the pump, it appears to be fine. I have put in a new pressure tank. I have checked all of the valves (they are all fully open). But, still no water. the pump used to run for a bit and then kick off, then start running again when more water was needed. Occasionally we would loose "prime" and i would have to go under the house and manually "prime" the pump again. Now it seems to work as long as i manually prime the pump but if i stop and let it go on "automatic" then it will work for a few minutes and then cut off...then we loose water shortly after that. I had thought about a pump that just constatly works 100% of the time, but i am afraid taht it may burn out if we loose water pressure. Is there anything that could cause the pump to not work currently? Thanks!

no one has lived in my home for about 2 years and there is low pressure water. I called the water dep and they check the water pressure they said it's fine. the issue is that when I open the water in one sink the water will be really low in the other or in the shower. I can not open two things at a time cos the pressure will be low. as long as I open one at a time, that is the only way it will have normal pressure. can someone help me pls

This article was informative but I am not sure what my issue is. I have had fine water pressure for a few years. My home is about 4yrs old and I am the original owner. All of a sudden about a week or so ago my pressure went extremely low. My valve inside are like the one pictured above and seem to be in the open position. The pipes are running from my waterheater and also I hear a sound as if water is runinng when everything is off also. I live in a condo so I have no idea where to even fine my outside tank. Would I just needeport this to my water company? Any help and information would be appreciated. Thanks

I just moved into a house in the country with a well. The water pressure is extremely bad. Although, there are times when it decides to kick on. Is there anything I can do? Are there different ways of resolving water pressure issues if you have a well vs. city water?

Dear Sir,

I have 2 showers in the house which now both have low pressure lights showing. Both showers have stopped working. The pressure in the kitchen tap is fine and Thames Water advised if this tap is okay then the pressure in the house is wrong and needs to be adjusted. They advised a plumber but I have asked them to do it. What do you advise I do to maximise the pressure.

Thanks.

I have just bought my fifth home but my first to be on well water. It has an older water softner also which I have never had before. The water pressure is so bad only one unit (facet, shower, toilet, etc...) can be on at one time. I know I will not have the same pressure as my city water houses in the past but I have 3 full baths and it does me no good because you can only use one at a time. When only using one unit, water will flows with very little pressure but it will flow. If the toilet is flushed at the same time water flow almost stops. Please let me know what my options are? I don't mind spending some money as long as I will get significant return on the monetary investment.
Thank you for your time,
Sean

House built 1952 builder got away with having 3/4" water pipe coming
into house, then reducing it to 1/2"
inside. After years of use pipes have probably reduced in size. The pressure is really bad. Is there any way to clean out these pipes and restore the pressure?

I have a different water pressure question. When I first turn on my water I get better pressure then after it runs for say 5 seconds. It then gets less pressure?

This happens everywhere in my house.

Thanks,

Rog
