You put lots of joint compound that you then sand smooth.

The wall will require quite a bit of drywall mudd and sanding...much more
than a novice could ever complete.
Try simply attaching 1/4" drywall sheets over the surfaces needing vinyled and you can easily make the surface perfect.
Just a handy tip.
