Galvanized Nails Quiz

This is an experiment. I discussed it in my September 14, 2016 AsktheBuilder Newsletter under Galvanized Nails, Screws and Connectors.

I want to see if you're interested in discovering how and why things work around your home in a fun and clever way.

Please take the quiz below. It's only five questions.

All of the questions are REQUIRED. I'll be publishing graphic results of how you and others did on each question.

The CORRECT ANSWERS to the quiz are down below it, but don't cheat and look at them.

There are also LINKS to past columns of mine about galvanizing that explain all of this in MUCH GREATER detail.

I URGE YOU TO CLICK the LINKS and do a little reading to get the FACTS about galvanizing.

COMMENT BELOW after taking the quiz to let me know if you liked this. If enough respond, I'll continue to do this.

I DO like the quiz! It makes me think about the subject more closely!

However, I do find the answer portion frustrating.

I submit my five answers then scroll down to see how I did. . .

Question number 4 was YES. But was that about the number of times dipped or lasting 100 years?????

We need to see the answers in context if it is to be truly informative!

    Thanks for listening!

Was pleased to see that I knew them

  8. GeorgeSK says:

Fun. It would be nice to have the questions repeated at the answers, though.

  9. Bob Pethtal says:

"interested in discovering how and why things work around your home in a fun and clever way." Great idea Tim! I'm all for it. Put me down on the absolutely side of the ledger.

  10. Bill Meeder says:

I'm a DIYer who doesn't need quite that much detail. Would rather read other stories of your experiences that might help me some day. I'll leave the chemistry lessons to other readers. But thanks for asking.

  11. Bob P says:

Yes, I like the quiz. I would have liked to see a score for my answers. Thanks, Bob P

  12. Dennis O Taylor says:

"Zinc! You're galvanized!" A friend of mine said he heard that from his chemistry teacher. This test and the reference material with it tells us there is a little bit more to the story. Thanks!

  13. patrick says:

It would be helpful if you included the question corresponding to it's answer....or did I miss something?

  14. Al Lightle says:

Thanks Tim, that's fun. I like learning about the details. It's always fun to learn some of the "behind the scene" facts.

  15. Jock Ellis says:

I put no to 100 years because part of the roof on my grandfather's (1881-1960) is rusted and part is still shiny.
Also only the left side of the quiz showed up on my iPhone 4.

  16. Rene Malaise says:

Great idea! I'm not as ignorant as I thought I might be. 🙂

  17. Ruth E Smith says:

Yes! These are informative, especially for a casual DIY person like myself. I like the chemistry explanations because it can be applied to other problems. And I just like chemistry. However, the correct answers need to be associated with the question with something besides a number, maybe with a short comment or perhaps the relevant link. I had to go find the questions to see which ones were which number. Personally, I would like to see the quiz AFTER reading the relevant material - it would show me how much I have retained, and emphasize the most important points. A situational word problem with multiple choice answers would be useful also, like what sort of nails/treated wood would I choose for X job I have in mind. Thanks for all your thoughtful work on this website, Tim!

  18. Pita says:

Yes,this was informative. Being right or wrong is irrelevant. Knowing the mistake you made is the best price way to ensure that you won't make it again. Working in a building supply store I get lots of questions regarding galvanized or Stain less Steel fastenings. We ensured all staff were made aware of the differences and what would be the best product to use. You are all about making the right decision and this little exercise ensures that your members receive the correct information. Keep up the great work.

  19. ROB says:

A few suggestions to make your quiz more "straight-forward"
#2 - answers are about different ideas - yes is about the chemicals - no is referring to the number of processes or coats ...neither one refers to different processes
#3 - yes answer introduces an additional concept of water which could be a factor whether the lumber is pressure treated or not
#5 the question is asking about "hot-dipped" as a process ... the answers are referring to the number of dips - not whether hot-dipped or not

  20. Sandy M. says:

Yes, I thought this was a lot of fun! But...I got three of the five correct, and it looks like it didn't show on my score (score said I got 0/0). But I got 2, 3 & 4 correct. What happened? No worries - keep 'em coming! Love doing this because I learn more! Thanks so much!

  21. ron says:

Love quizzes like this. Your answers at the bottom show I got 4 of 5 correct, yet when I looked at how I scored, it shows 0/0 a the top??

  22. Kent Zimmerman says:

I like the quiz but you need show the question with the answer.

  23. Bernie says:

Interesting but at the end you need to put the complete question and answers together, I'm still not sure if about my answers. Good job with the quiz but needs some polishing.

  24. Tatulescu Mihai says:

Testing the depths of my ignorance is always fun !

  25. Robert Beamish says:

I have seen enough galvanized steel and tin which helped me get the answers all right.
Done right it will last a long time especially if it does not have to sit wet, such as a water tank or in our case it was galvanized well cribbing that only lasted 20 years because it was always in the water, above the water it was fine.
Some very good comments that are already in are educational. Have a great day.

  26. Jane ME/MO says:

I don't know anything about galvanizing but checked what I'd like the product to do and got 5/5. It was fun and I learned by taking the quiz. Sure made me feel pretty good to see the results.

  27. Charles A Scherck says:

I enjoyed the quiz and look forward to more quizzes - they are a learning experience - and good score helps, too!

  28. Jim Kautz says:
