  1. A related note; as I understand it, the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Trans Continental Railroad comes up several months from now. Union Pacific RR, one of the 2 railroads involved (I think it eventually took over the other) is planning to celebrate - at the spot where the two railroads came together in Utah, to bring to it #4014 - a Big Boy 4-8-8-4 locomotive so huge it has two boilers and 4 pistons, so long that the loco sort of bends in the middle to get around curves. Big Boys, built for UP during WW2 to reduce crew sizes by having such a powerful steam loco that only one was needed for a large crane, went out of service by about 1960, and no one ever really thought, despite hopes, that one would ever be put back in service. But the UP steam shop is doing just that, and doing an amazing job at it. And even nicer, since their 4-6-6-2 Challenger (that is out of service for rebuilding) shares many of the same parts, UP is having extra parts made for the Challenger as they are made for the Big Boy. If you've never seen one of the several (out of about 30) Big Boys in person, it is hard to comprehend just how huge they are.

    As to the TCRR, just remember that this was something that Abe Lincoln knew was crucial to the US.

  2. They'll not be bringing any of those engines to the historic spot. There are no tracks leading to it any longer. They were ripped up in WW II for the war. The causeway across the Great Salt Lake created a massive shortcut bypassing the Promontory Basin.
