February 19, 2014 AsktheBuilder Newsletter & Tips

Okay, I'll make this really fast. Well, I'll try.

If you're a NEW subscriber, you've come on board at a crazy time. I just started my annual Treasure Hunt that runs for three weeks. A link to it is just below.

It's a hectic time and I'll be reaching out to you quite a bit over the next 20 days.

Regular newsletters will resume SOON. Please be patient as the Treasure Hunt continues.

How Lucky Am I?

I work alone each day in my office. I get inundated with pitches about new building products. Kathy, my wife, is upstairs, but for the most part I feel like I'm in solitary confinement.

It's easy to get isolated and somewhat out of touch with what's going on.

But every now and then, something happens that creates a tsunami of positive reinforcement reassuring me I'm on the right track. I really need that from time to time and you might be one who's just splashed me with some saltwater.

The comment you might have shared with me yesterday about Day One of the AsktheBuilder.com Treasure Hunt gave me a bad case of insomnia. I was out of bed at 2:30 a.m. My mind was spinning like a top thinking about the comments and all the ones that might be in my email inbox.

I'm beat right now. Not only did I get up in the middle of the night, but I've also been dealing with LOTS of snow here at the house. We had 10 inches overnight and I had some cleanup to do from last week's snow while I was out on the west coast.

Did you know I went to the Behr Paint Editors Conference? I'll be sharing a bunch of information about Behr coming up in the next few weeks. Bottom Line: Great company - great products.

Believe it or not, I'm having as much fun as you are on my side of the Treasure Hunt!

I'm so very fortunate to have you as a subscriber and when I read what you write back to me, it really makes all the work worthwhile. Thanks so very much for all of your inspiration.

Speaking of that, you should read a few of the great comments being said about the Treasure Hunt.

If you've not played Day One, read why you should. CLICK HERE to read some fantastic and funny comments!

I sure hope Pat still has his job. It'll make sense when you click the link just above.

Color Challenged

My very good friend Marty Hovey is color blind. What's fascinating is he's an exceptionally talented graphic designer that needs to work with colors. I don't know how he does it.

Yesterday, I received two emails from people asking me to not depend on colors for clues. I have to apologize up front now and say it's tough to do that.

My suggestion is for you, if you're color blind, is to possibly get a friend, coworker, or someone else to help you if I ask about a color.

As you might imagine, it's impossible to satisfy everyone.

Please Share!

Can you do me a HUGE favor? Would you be willing to share yesterday's email with as many as you know?

I'm trying to get the Treasure Hunt to go viral.

This means you need to share my email with as many as you know. At some point magic will happen.

I appreciate this if you would send out ALL of the emails about the Treasure Hunt to all you know.

Amping it Up

Have you heard phrases like:

  • Game on
  • Bring it on
  • Give me your best shot
  • Is that all you brought to the party? (I sort of made that one up....)

As you might expect, there's a great mix of folks on this list of mine. You might be one that really wants to be challenged and thought Day One of the Treasure Hunt was way too easy.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!

"I've got you!" - as Hercule Poirot would say in Masterpiece Theatre.

I knew you'd email me. I knew you'd challenge me to up my game.

Well, wait until Day Two.

Have you ever gone to Las Vegas and played blackjack or 21?

When you get a pair, sometimes the dealer will let you split them and you can play two hands. Think of it as a side bet.

Well the dealer laid two aces on me. The only other better cards would be two eights.

If you need a challenge, then let's have a side game inside the Treasure Hunt.

I've decided to add BONUS questions on all the remaining days of the Treasure Hunt.

You do NOT have to answer the Bonus questions, but they're there for those who want a real challenge.

Let's see if you've got game. Indeed.

I don't want to hear any excuses. Seriously, the BONUS questions are for those who want a challenge. If you find them too hard, just skip them or guess.

Once again, please thank the sponsors of the Treasure Hunt!

Here they are:

LE Johnson

Fein Power Tools

Therma-Tru Doors

PC Epoxy

Sakrete

CordLatch

I'M COMING TO YOUR HOUSE AND WILL INSIST YOU TURN ON IMAGES!!!!

I Cry Uncle - You Win Old Man Winter

Here are two photos I took about an hour ago.  The first one is my parking area south of my garage. The snow bank along the drive is 6-feet tall. Much more snow and the blower will just make it over.

The second photo is my front sidewalk. I realize some people in the Snowbelt east of the Great Lakes get much more snow. For us, this is a bunch. Usually it melts a little in between storms.

TURN ON IMAGES TO SEE A KITTEN BURIED UNDER A SNOW DRIFT. SEE THE BLACK BODY?

TURN ON IMAGES NOW. IF YOU DON'T I'LL SUMMON MY LOCAL WIZARD FRIENDS HERE IN NH AND WE'LL SHIP ALL OUR SNOW TO YOU. DON'T BELIEVE ME? GO AHEAD, TAKE THE CHANCE. Okay, be WATCHING your inbox for the next set of Sailing Instructions.

If you had fun yesterday, wait till the next time. Each day it's going to get a little tougher.
