Kathy and I are on the road visiting her dad. He's 96 and while in reasonably good health, he's declining.

If you're a new subscriber, you need to know right now this issue is by no means a normal one with respect to buckets full of home improvement content.

There will only be one home improvement tidbit today.

Every now and then when a major or minor tectonic tremor of life rumbles me, I share it here.

Today is one of those days.

Veterans Day

Tomorrow is the day here in America where we honor living veterans who served our country in a time of war or peace.

It's a shame we do it just one day a year as we non-vets owe to both living and dead veterans everything we have.

There are all sorts of cliches out there but one of my favorites is this simple one:

Freedom isn't free.

Look back through history and you'll quickly see that the unique set of rules we live by here in the USA - our Constitution - was a radical departure from what happened here on the planet for thousands of years.

Prior to September of 1787 when the US Constitution was signed, most people on the planet lived to serve a monarchy, dictatorship or despot.

I'm reminded of the simple line in the movie Ben Hur, "We keep you alive to serve this ship."

New Hampshire was the ninth of the thirteen colonies that put the US Constitution in play when they ratified it in June of 1788.

Ever since that day, there have been people here in the USA and across the world trying to put the genie back into the bottle.

Our veterans have given much, some the ultimate sacrifice, to ensure that doesn't happen.

My dad was one. He was a medic in General Bradley's Second Corps that invaded Sicily at Anzio Beach. Along with General Patton and British General Montgomery, my dad and tens of thousands of vets drove the Huns up through Italy and eventually back to Germany.

In March of 1944, my dad was captured by the Huns in the south of France and served 13 months as a POW in Poland growing potatoes for the German army. He was liberated by the Russians in April of 1945 who were driving from the east to beat the Huns.

My dad suffered severe PTSD as a result of his service. His deep depression led to a sedentary lifestyle and he died from heart failure at the young age of 59. I was just 24 when we had to send him back to Heaven.

He, and hundreds of thousands of other vets, had their lives shredded defending the precious rights you and I have.

But each day these rights are under attack.

You may not believe it, but it's true. There are groups of people out there right now that dream of putting your head on a stake. These people are relatives of the Barbary Pirates and the radical Islamic terrorists that flew planes into the World Trade Center, the US Pentagon and that placid field in PA on September 11, 2001.

I apologize for that wretched graphic, but it's true.

The Two Richards

Last night, Kathy and I had dinner with my best friend Richard and his wife Linda.

Richard is a Vietnam vet. He enlisted in the US Marines to serve our great nation and after his first tour, he volunteered to go back to the battlefield.

A grenade explosion has robbed Richard of his hearing in his right ear and lots of it in his left ear.

He loves music and he told me last night that music doesn't sound right at all now. He described it as lots of crackling and static.

But he harbors no bitterness about what happened.

Over the years, he's shared some of his scary stories about what it was like in the heat of battle.

I can only imagine how terrifying it is.

About twenty years ago I started this newsletter. What a horrible shame I can't tell you the exact date.

It's one of the mistakes I've made here at AsktheBuilder.com. I've failed to record many of the important things not thinking much at the time that they'd be important.

This happens to many of us and it's covered really well in a scene in the movie Field of Dreams.

CLICK HERE and listen to what Doc Graham says when Kevin Costner asks him the question, "So what was that like?" It happens at 1:03 into the clip.

What major events in your life are brushing past you like a stranger in the crowd?

Believe me, there's magic in the moonlight to make your dreams come true if you just open your eyes.

But I digress.

The second Richard I want to tell you about is one I've had the distinct pleasure to meet via this simple newsletter. Let's call him Dick so as to not cause confusion.

Dick and his wife Sue became friends of mine when I shared in this newsletter so many years ago about my invitation to spend two days aboard the USS George Washington while it was out at sea.

CLICK HERE to read about this rare opportunity.

Dick was keenly interested in this upcoming trip of mine because he was a real tail hooker.

Dick was a US Navy fighter pilot in the Vietnam war.

He sent me an email to tell me what I was going to experience and to get me mentally prepared for the 24+ hours of eye and ear candy I was to enjoy.

Business travels would take me to where Dick and Sue lived and I visited them no less than three or four times.

We've become very good friends and I'm sad that I don't get to see Dick as often as I'd like. He and Sue are incredibly generous people.

What's this all have to do with you?

You could be a vet and I don't know it. You could be married to one. One could be your son or daughter. One could be your parent.

I simply hope that you seek out as many veterans as you can today, tomorrow and next week and just thank them for their service and what they've done to enrich your life.

You getting this newsletter would be IMPOSSIBLE without their sacrifices.

You may take freedom of the press as just a normal thing.

It's not normal or wasn't before 1788.

I've said enough for today I think.

Go out of your way to touch a veteran.

Thanks Dad, Richard and Dick for your service.

Thanks to you if you're a vet and I don't know it.

Thank you for making my life easier and filled with things that millions of others only dream to have.

Oh, you want that one home improvement tip?

I'll be back to you on Sunday once I'm back in New Hampshire.

Snow Causing Roof Leak

DEAR TIM: I have an unusual narrow roof valley against a dormer where snow builds up, turns to ice and then leaks into my house. The shingles look fine, so I’m wondering if the water is coming in through some wood siding that forms one side of this roof canyon. That’s what I call it. The snow can get up to 3 feet deep here in the dead of winter. How can I determine where the leak is coming from? What’s the best way to stop all water from entering the house? Trying to remove the snow is very problematic, so please don’t tell me that I must do that. Victor C., Ontario, Canada

DEAR VICTOR: Guess what? I know you live in Canada where the cold winter winds blow but the advice I’m about to offer you will help someone in sunny Florida or any other place where wind-driven howling rainstorms cause roof leaks. This is a rare Spandex one-size-fits-all answer about roof leaks.

The photo you sent tells the entire story. Photos allow me to really see what’s going on and give you the best advice. I have to say, you sure do have a ‘roof canyon’ that will cause all sorts of leaks if the roofing is not installed by a real professional familiar with the weather conditions in your area.

Here’s an interesting fact many forget. I was lucky to start my building career in an old city with some of the houses built in the late 1800’s. What I can tell you is that I rarely would find a roof detail like yours. I feel this is because roofers back then knew that it was quite hard to prevent leaks like your having. Part of this was because they didn’t have access to the modern underlayments we have and the solution they did have most regular people couldn’t afford.

When roofers of old faced very challenging roof details like yours where a wall and two roof planes all come together much like a kitchen funnel, they’d use sheets of copper soldered together to create a waterproof roof covering in this area.

If copper was too expensive, flat locked tin-plated steel was a great substitute. The only issue with the tin is that it required periodic painting to keep it in perfect condition. No matter what material was used, it was a very labor intensive process and only the wealthy could afford it.

You don’t have to go this route because you can purchase remarkable peel-and-stick roof underlayments that contain rubberized asphalt. The brand I prefer and just used on my entire roof this past summer is Grace Ice and Water Shield.

Here’s what’s going on and why your roof is leaking. Heat leaking up from your home is melting the snowpack in the tight roof canyon. The cold weather turns the super-chilled water to ice and the ice pack begins to get thicker and thicker creating a dam quite like Hoover Dam, but a much smaller.

Most roofing materials are designed to work under the influence of gravity. The materials are typically layered with each successive course overlapping the one below it as the materials march up the roof. The ice dam causes water to build up under each layer and it doesn’t take long for it to overflow the top of a layer, find gaps in the wood sheathing and pour into your home.

The underlayment I used on my house sticks to the wood sheathing and it sticks to itself. When installed according to the manufacturer’s written installation instructions, it forms a waterproof barrier under the finished roofing that covers it. My membrane is so good that it seals to the nail shafts that are used to secure the finished roofing to the sheathing. It’s an amazing product.

To fix your leaks permanently, you need to strip off your existing roofing down to the wood sheathing. You need to remove the finished siding on the sides of the dormer. The membrane needs to be installed as they say in the instructions and it needs to lap up at least a foot or more on the sides of the dormer to ensure you never have a leak along that wall. Consider putting covering the entire side wall of the dormer to the deepest depth snow can build up in this area of the roof.

I urge you to get the written installation instructions of the Grace product, read them and understand them. If you can’t inspect the work as the roofer is doing it, ask him to take lots of photos as he installs each piece of the membrane. Remember, this membrane needs to start low and each successive piece overlaps the one below it.

You want to make sure the membrane is perfect before it gets hidden by the finished roofing. If the roofer wants a few extra dollars for the effort of taking the photos, it’s well worth it. You want to approve the membrane before the roofer proceeds with the final roofing.

Be very careful about accepting a substitute membrane no matter what the roofer says. Not all waterproofing membranes are the same! Some do not stick well to themselves. Some do not seal around the nail shafts of the finished roofing that penetrate them. Trying to save a few hundred dollars here is being penny wise and pound foolish.

Man Powered Glider

Have you dreamed of flying like a bird?

Some ultra-light aircraft are not so safe.

Gliders are attractive because there's no engine thus no noise.

But traditional gliders must be towed up into the air by a real airplane.

What about human-powered gliders with real wings that won't collapse like an ultralight?

These videos may inspire you to look into this desire by many to do what the Wright Brothers did on that sand at Kitty Hawk so long ago.

This is the take-off video. The one below it shows how to land.

If you could read all the questions I get each day, I'm convinced you'd come away with this conclusion:

"Tim, why don't people do research BEFORE they start a project?"

That's my advice for you and what I'd love for you to spread to any friends, neighbors or co-workers.

Most of the email I get are from people who are drowning in misery. They've started a project and things have gone south.

They want me to throw them a virtual life preserver as they thrash about in the deep water.

When I do an autopsy on their issue, the report almost always shows the person:

  • failed to read the installation instructions
  • hoped the contractor would do it right
  • didn't do their due diligence

Why do you think this is happening? It seems to be getting worse, not better.

I scratch my head as to why people don't use the search engine at my site before they start a project.

I ponder why a person would not invest just $49 to talk to me on the phone for 15 minutes BEFORE they get started.

Slow down on your next project and try to avoid tumbling into the icy waters of the Home Improvement Sea.

California Drought Solution

Unless you live under a rock, you're probably aware of the extended drought in California.

What's crazy about the situation is that Californians have access to unlimited water right next to them.

The Pacific Ocean.

I've said for years they should do what many other people do all over the world - desalinate ocean water.

Well, a new plant is opening in Carlsbad, CA and guess what?

The average water bill of a homeowner is only going up $5 per month if the article is correct. Look at the bottom of the article above.

Wouldn't that be worth it to you to have water all the time and not have to worry?

Play a Game

Have you ever seen the Where's Waldo books for kids?

When my daughter Meghan was a toddler, we had a similar book called Cars and Trucks and Things that Go. You had to find gold bug on each page.

Meghan called the cute bug, "Ah Bug".

It brings a tear to my eye thinking about holding Meghan in my lap and turning each page. She knew exactly where "Ah Bug" was and would get angry at me when I put my thumb over him so she couldn't see him.

Well, I've got an ADULT game for you just like it.

Another Davinci Roofscapes Video!

My roof is finished. It was a labor of love.

All I get are compliments about it. Look at the following photo and you'll see why.

CLICK HERE to watch my third video in the series.

I'm editing videos #4 and #5 today.

If you're a new subscriber I had to put a new roof on my home this summer.

My 30-year asphalt shingle roof failed in just TWELVE years.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association refused to answer my questions as did the TOP THREE asphalt shingle manufacturers.

After the holidays, you'll see an investigative report on this situation. If you, or someone you know, works in an asphalt shingle manufacturing plant, I'd love to interview that person. All off the record, of course.

Kathy and I decided we've had it with asphalt and went with Davinci Roofscapes Single-Width Synthetic Slate.

I'm so happy we did.

How to STOP MOLD

Rotten Wood Threshold

Teresa Schenck has a rotten wood threshold at her home in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Here's what she sent me:

"As you can see, this piece of wood at my back door is rotting.

It is about 1.5-2 " wide, and maybe 6-8" deep.

My deck is also there. I am replacing the wood decking.

I want to fix this piece of wood while I am working on the deck. I don't even know what it's called. How can I best fix this?"

The red arrows point to the rotten threshold. Photo credit: Teresa

The red arrows point to the rotten threshold. Photo credit: Teresa

Here's my answer:

Teresa, you've got a serious problem.

The threshold under the door is not treated lumber - at least I've never seen one before.

They're designed to be painted and have a drip kerf on the underside to shed water and stop it from rolling under the threshold.

The threshold is supposed to be able to dry out fast after each rain.

Whoever built the deck against it made a serious error.

Water is now trapped and the wood can't easily dry.

To do this the right way, you need to remove the deck band board and joists around the threshold.

You do this by building a header that connects to the joists on either side of the doorway.

I'd put this header about three inches away from the threshold.

Then I'd install a lead flashing over the wood threshold after allowing it to dry and painting it very well.

The lead would have to go under the aluminum door threshold I see in the photo.

Failure at any step in the process will just cause more rot in the future.

I had a very busy week.

How about you?

Yesterday, my son helped me finish installing two new Chamberlain WiFi garage door openers.

The install went really well. We had a problem at the end with the old wiring connected to the sensors that are installed at the bottom of the door track.

Once I tracked down the loose wire connection - I didn't install the original doors - and we re-aligned the sensor so both tiny LED lights were on, all was well.

Today, we'll do the last step and install the app on my Nexus 4 smart phone to be able to control the doors from anywhere I've got Internet access.

I also need to program the HomeLink sun visor buttons in two cars so the doors open when you touch them.

Friday night, I participated in the Zombie Shuffle. It was an epic evening for me.

I have a Vitamix blender It's been used once a day for about 7 -8 years. The blender looks like I had blended car parts in it... Stained, cloudy, just plain yucky.

I had read many websites, including the Vitamix site, saying to clean with lemon juice, vinegar, etc.

None of them worked at all.

Water Heater Expansion Tanks

I've written in the past WHY you need expansion tanks on water heaters. CLICK HERE to read about them.

But last night I received a question from Alan. He wanted to know if he needed one or more.

I answered his questions, but then shared the CORRECT way, in my opinion, to install one.

All too often I see water heater expansion tanks installed the WRONG WAY.

Plumbers hang them off a pipe sideways much like if you'd hold out your arm with a filled two-liter bottle of soda.

Yes, your arm gets tired from the weight.

How do you think the pipe feels? How much stress do you think is on the tee fitting with an expansion tank that is partially filled with WATER?

Look at the photo below. This is how expansion tanks should be installed.

Yes, the lighting could have been better.

What do you see?

Here's what I see:

  • the tank is resting on wood blocks on the floor
  • the tank has a shutoff valve above it - see the yellow handle of the ball valve?
  • the tank is not putting any stress on the piping

This is how your expansion tanks should be installed. Don't allow a plumber to tell you otherwise.

The shutoff valve is absolutely a must have. When the tank needs to be switched out after it fails, you can do it in minutes without interrupting any water service to the occupants of the home.

Christmas is Coming!

I just started creating a new section at my website. It's not ready yet for you to see.

It should help you with tough decisions in the coming weeks.

I think I'm going to title it:

Things I Love and Use

Not a week goes by that someone writes to me, "Tim, I trust you. I just want to know what watch, what saw, what coffee mug, what wrench, what shoes, what ???? you use. Would you share with me to save me lots of time and money?"

That's a good idea.

With Christmas around the corner, you may be looking for unusual gift ideas - or practical ones.

I love practical.

For example, I'm a nut about accurate time. Being a train conductor, it's important to know all about time.

I happen to love old-fashioned analog watches.

I'm on my second Swiss Army Victorinox men's watch. My first one only lasted 15 years.

They only lose about 1 second per week. That's not bad.

This new section at the site will eventually be a huge list of everything I use here at my house. Stuff I simply love.

Even tee shirts! Look at this photo of the ones I really love.

Dickies drirelease® Performance T Shirt Review

Dickies Drirelease® Performance T Shirt Review

Many of my peers get products to review and write the review within hours of receiving the product.

I employ a more disciplined technique as I prefer to use the product in real life more than a few times and then report what I discovered.

Sure, there's always the sweep-you-off-your-feet initial reaction you might get with meeting a new person or seeing a new product.

But as we all know, after the makeup comes off and you see that new person the next day, you might have a different opinion.

The same is true for new products.

You need to TEST them out time and again to give a true opinion.

How do I feel about the Dickies drirelease® Performance Tee?

It's quite possibly the BEST tee shirt I've ever worn.

Fit:

The fit of the tee shirt is excellent. I'd say their sizing is very accurate.

I LOVED the longer length of the shirt. I hate tee shirts that are cut to reveal unwanted body parts when you bend over.

Feel:

The blend of 85 percent polyester and 15% cotton is perfect. The cotton gives the tee a smooth-as-silk feel.

Moisture Relief:

As advertised, this shirt does dry much faster than a 100-percent cotton tee shirt.

Colors:

I got both a fire-engine red and a navy blue shirt. The colors are rich and have resisted fading. The shirts come in at least ten colors at the time of this review.

To prevent ANY fading, I occasionally wash them using Stain Solver - a Certified organic oxygen bleach. This product also helps de-odorize the shirts of any latent perspiration that ordinary laundry soaps may not remove.

Final Score:

Five hammers out of five! hammer-5-5

Davinci Roofscapes vs. Asphalt Shingles Video 3 of 5

In this 3rd of 5 videos, Tim Carter shares the Davinci Roofscapes Single-Width Slate system in this video. He also shows just a few of the 50 different colors the synthetic slate comes in.

Davinci Roofscapes is a roofing product that will not fail like asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles, for the most part, have become unreliable and are not made like they used to be decades ago.

October 27, 2015 AsktheBuilder Newsletter

If you're a new or newer subscriber, this is a pretty special issue.

Every now and then I'm able to provide you with a FUN game that helps you discover some really cool stuff about different products.

Today's one of those days.

I'll bet you thought all dehumidifiers were the same.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The best comparison I can offer are circular saws.

I just went to Amazon and looked at two saws that appear to be the same.

Both were red in color. Both had electric cords. Both had the same sized blades.

That's where the similarities ended.

The internal parts - the ones that matter - are quite different.

One saw will work for you eight hours a day five days a week for years.

The other saw will probably burn up and melt if you tried to use it continuously for more than an hour.

I know this for a fact because I saw my good friend Marty burn up his circular saw in 30 minutes one day.

The better saw with the better parts that you can depend on costs more.

You'd expect that when you buy anything that's really high quality.

A True Mold Story

Last week, I featured my 15-Minute Phone Consult.

Yes, you and I can talk on the phone if need be to solve a tough problem at your home.

Lori took advantage of it.

She and her husband Adam had a water pipe burst at their home six months ago.

The water ran for more than a day before they discovered the flood.

Pros were brought in to try to remediate the damage and they didn't do such a great job.

In fact, Lori's house is STILL TORN UP.

In that amount of time, I could have built Lori and Adam a new home from scratch.

To remediate the mold, the pros used great dehumidifiers. They know you need to get the water vapor out of the house FAST.

You may have a damp smelly basement.

The SMELL is MOLD. When the mold spores are shot out of the microscopic mold plants you can't see, it's done with pressurized GAS.

It's plant flatulence.

Just like the odor from animal or human flatulence, mold has its own distinct ODOR.

When you eliminate the water in your home, mold stops growing.

To STOP the mold, you need a great dehumidifier.

CLICK HERE NOW to discover the dehumidifier that will make your wildest mold-removal dreams come true.

Just go play the game.

I'll be back on Friday with a boatload of tips and a touching story about what happened to Kathy and I yesterday.

It was life changing.
